  • Great idea! Thanks for sharing it. Well done!

  • Technology is crazy! Very cool. Check out my channel if you can. The Dirty Cricks cover Fooled Again too and the guitar player converts the synth to guitar. You have to see it. Such a cool sound.

  • they are playing to a midi synchronizer that's why they are so in sync. This is one the greatest rock songs ever written IMHO.

  • no keith :(

  • By far the best intro ever, for my taste.

  • dude tht intro just brings me in to tears

  • the drumming competition at 7:44 is much deseqilibrated for moons side LOOOL

  • only the explosive power is gone

    damn aging

does pete still remember TKAA stuff? lool

and the damn moon(badly replaced by the man in l8, zak is a better substitute) and ox(the one and only ox)

but they sound as the same, totally pros

  • this may have been said already, but the really impressive part is that in '78, the synth was on tape, and in '05 it was played live by the stage keyboardist. daltrey and townshend have said that they hated when the synth was on tape, because they couldn't break away from it. and now that they can, the song is still virtually the same.

    thanks for posting.

  • So cool!! Thank you!!

  • Shows how important tempo is.

  • It's done to a click - the synth effect can be reproduced to a degree by a guitar these days using effect peddles but back when this was originally played live they had to use a sequencer which would be synced to the speed of the click track. Fully agree - Moon is god.....it must have atken some work to get him to play to a click though!

  • Two words... backing track. Note the headphones on Moon, BTW my favorite drummer of all time.

  • the KAAR clip is one of the classic clips for all time, also check out the special ed recut.

but have to say v interesting thanks for sharing..dynamic Who

  • Great video, Synchro, great idea.

Roger Daltry's voice still holds up.

  • foda-se.... minuto 7:53... ca puta de arrepio....

  • nothing can compare to Moonie's Who!!

  • agreed 100%Moon was the Who.

  • COOL ! You may enjoy Scrap Gold's version.

  • Puta que o pariu,,,,,simplesmente sensacional,,,,to emocionado aqui porra!!!!!!!!!!!! The Who,a banda maios explosiva do Rock!!

  • Wow still When Big Papa John Was Alive *sighs*

  • are they both exaclt in time?

  • I feel sad that I didn't knew this group before the last 7 months!!! Guitar Hero 3 came out with the who song(the seeker), and I took guitar courses, to finnally know them. I can't believe they made history like this it's awesome!!!

  • toxboxnissan: if you liked this, you HAVE TO listen to quadrophenia, the WHOLE album. its the just perfect. if you like the who, you'll love it. prehaps you heard it already though

  • Without The Who there wouldnt be Rock n Roll as we know it. Definitely need to research the history of Rock if you dont know the Who!!!

  • Where to start from hmm XD

  • Start with,in fact,"Live At Leeds" and "Who's Next" as well as "Quadrophenia","Tommy" and "My Generation" (aka "The Who Sings My Generation").

  • I do know my Generation, I'll check other's.

  • Just: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pete.... 2008.lil less coke.lil less hair.

God love them. The best and most original band .period.

  • God. I hope they don't turn into the Rolling Stones. Some people just have to know when to quit. Especialy when two of the essential members are dead.

  • lol!

  • Wow, thanks for this

  • moonie is louder than the drummer in the 2005 version, probably zack starkey.

  • Not Zak no, it's Steve White (ex-Weller).

  • It's called a click track *then* and a click track *now*. :-) Well done.

  • i could'nt watch this upload and not leave a comment! all the best to all of you fans. Brilliant band

  • Seeing them in April. I'll do my best not to cry!!!

  • the singer hasnt aged well

  • with very little bias on my part, i'm inclined to disagree. if anything, roger daltrey (aka "the singer") looks less ridiculous without that perm. more than 25 rock and roll-years later and only a little chubbier, i'd say he looks great by comparison!

  • WAY COOL!!!

    TY LAURA! :)

  • FANTASTIC POST 10********** & THEN SOME awesome share LAURA

  • BRILLIANT VERY WELL DONE LUV IT -

    Thanks Laura

  • awesome from 7:52 to 7:58!

  • Lord have mercy, is that Townsend playing a Strat???? Who'da thunk LOL. Thye have obviously slowwed down a bit over the years like the rest of us.

  • Seeing the two together, it's quite obvious just what a talent Keith Moon was. He's so busy on the drums, and not just keeping time. He's all over it like a rash in his own unique style!

  • The whole song is ran with the synth in the background... Keith has the headphones on and has it playing directly to his ears... etc...

  • They stay in sync about 70% of the time. It's great when they do, but it sounds interesting when they don't too. What a great experiment, this is just amazing.

  • They're playing to the same keyboard backing track for 35 years now. This is one of the few songs they have to play the exact same way all the time,to stay in synch.

  • This is great!

It shows there is *No Expiration Date on Rock* OR The Who!

I loved Pete's solo's backing each other up, fantastic!

  • I think the latest version sounds great, but it sorely misses out on Entwistle's bass.

  • Thanks for posting this! I used it to work up my own cover version and it came in *real* handy. Keep up the good work! 5 stars!

  • Curse digital!!! That snare drum sound sucks on the right!!! Sounds like every other modern live snare drum Thank God the Who came out when they did so we dont have to listen to that modern crappy snare drum sound if we don't want to.

  • You can tell which one is better

  • Comment removed

  • singer has some rocking dance moves! love this song!

  • Oh My Gosh, how awesome can you get!? NOT MUCH MORE THAN THAT I TELL YA!! WHOOOO WE WONT GET FOOLED AGAIN!!!!

  • amazing. simply amazing. pure genius.

  • great band still wishing i lived at tht time for the music stead of this lincoln park shit . i heard they named thereselves after the place where fpr male prostitutes were buried

  • They got their name from a suggestion from one of their roommates...

  • haha this is cool!

  • at 7:51-7:55 with rogers YEAHHHHHH!!!!!! and petes powerslide i think all time stopped at that moment

  • thats a monumental part of this song. really gives it some umff

  • Heroes Are Remembered But Legends Never Die.

  • Never has the Sandlot been more appropriate.

  • Great video & sound!! Oh man does this show how special Keith was (& John & Pete)...just can't get over how incredible this group was....(still love ~Pete~ now)...and how much moonie is missed....the legend lives on!

    j

  • Epic.

  • too bad it wasnt starkey hes good but no one can beat keith moon Steve White was still pretty good for it though

  • ok keith moon is like one of my favorite drummist

  • jesus christ Keith Moon owns starkey in a heartbeat on that drum solo, and that was right around the time when moon was dying from alcoholism and obesity, Keith moon was great

  • It wasn't Starkey playing the Live 8. He was on tour with Oasis at the time, Steve White substituted on the drums for The Who.

  • cool combination, The Who are sweet

  • excuse me DO YA

  • Thats crazy!

    o_O

  • aww no "BOOYAH" in 05

  • Do ya*

  • And I actually hear the "DO YA" in 2005, at 3:51 in.

  • The YEEEEEEAH was the best part!

  • '78 owned '05 and Zak was owned Keith, though they're still unanimously the best rock band ever

  • The legend lives on :)

  • FANTASTIC is the only word I can think of to describe the video

  • Congratulations. You got me to unpack my DVD player to watch The Kids are Alright again. This video is amazing. Its hard to believe that they were able to play it so similarly after 27 years, and half the band died.

  • How did you get STEREO on You Tube?! That is the most frustrating thing about posting music videos on YT. I work like a dog to get a good stereo mix only to have it crushed into some 1950s mono radio mix. HELP!

  • They've changed things in the last couple months: you used to be able to upload a stereo FLV file if you kept the total bitrate (audio and video) below 350kbps it would keep the stereo audio, but now you can't - you have to upload a hi-resolution video in divx and it converts it to mono, only keeping the stereo for the their "High Quallity" mode.

  • Brilliant sound!!! This is what I'm always looking for, the best sound quality and you've won the award! I haven't heard anything like this in the 4-odd months I've been subscribed to YouTube - Congratulations!

  • the ox and moonie blank out the bass and drums in the newer version. its because they are legends.

  • It's amazing how much of the sound in this song came from the drums and the bass. As an example, isten to the 1978 version of this with the whole band, then listen to Entwistle's bass isolated.

  • Only 2 words GREAT TWICE

  • Awesome...Those were the good ole days..wish I was back then again..I was 32 and rocking...I remember this well :-)

  • Heh. this is pretty good.

  • This is great, but not THAT impressive - it's called a click track :p they used the tape in 1978, and used Simon playing keyboards to a click in 2005.

Still neat to hear some of the little bits that they kept in, though.

  • It's bad enough without Moonie but the Who sure as hell isnt the Who without The Ox. R.I.P. John

  • awesone!!! i was at the 2005 show at the hp privillion in san jose, ca

  • Yeah but I was at the '78 gig in Portsmouth!

  • I am totally jealous. I wasn't even born until 10 years after that. But I would have loved to been there.

  • wow they r incredible

  • great idea. is the audio from 1978 or 2005?

  • Both actually.

  • They own.

  • No matter what year, they still rock!

  • this shows that they can still rock.

  • I agree....good idea!!

  • Perfect synch

  • Brillant idea for a vid, LONG LIVE ROCK, LONG LIVE THE WHO!

  • This Is The Best Song Of All Time!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tell Me How To Make Side By Side Videos PLEASE!!!!!

  • This is why The Who own, they are over sixty years old and can still rock as hard as they did in their thirtys. Keep rockin' guys!

  • the who is just like the rolling stones. no matter what, the band keeps playing. thank god for that. there is no such thing as a The Who song that you just doesnt like!

  • dude. you stole my cut!

  • who gives a fuck its a good song

  • That's astonishing. The reasonit works is beacuse thery have to play this song to a backing track. If you tried it with My Generation or Pinball Wizardit wouldn't work.

  • Baba O'Riley would!

  • very well done ....what a treat thank you so much.....

  • Outrageous idea.. and it works! Thanks a bunch for making this video and sharing it!

  • Absolutely brilliant mate! Thanks for that. Whitey was a bit scared about the fill before daltreys scream wasnt he? And theres moonie like a herd of elephants, all over the place, back in dead on time somehow! Great job man, I'm gonna be emailing this to all my who fan buddys!

  • nice work my friend...

  • awsome

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡the best!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hehe, this is cool

  • We went horribly out of time around halfway through playing this song last year... rescued it for the big finish of course.

Nothing raises your appreciation for how awesome these guys were, like trying to play one of their songs on stage. Long Live The Who

  • wow! I want to both congratulate your effort and tell you that you have way too much time on your hands!

  • playback

  • The synth is, of course. They do have a keyboard guy that adds to it nowadays, but the synth backing is still the same ol' track.

  • ¡que pendejo eres!!!!

  • Turns out the G8 gig was drummed by Steve White (x Paul Weller). Guess he didn't know the material...

  • Finally, something worthwhile on YouTube. It is uncanny how these performances 'sync'. Good editting tho. But, like they say, "nothing like the original": never been the same since Moonie. One of the hardest (impossible) drumseats to fill. The G8 guy (Zak Starkey?) just plods (plus didn't 'get' how Moonies drum set up affected his playing style).

  • That ain't Starkey. I can't recall his name, sorry! Zak was busy with Oasis during Live 8.

I do like Zak Starkey though.

  • I think his name is Alan White. Him and the bassist are from Paul Wellers backing band.

  • It's Steve White - older brother of ex-Oasis drummer Alan. Steve has played with Paul Weller for years. The bassist is Damon Minchella - ex Ocean Colour Scene and also plays with Weller these days.

Great video! Thanks. I like how Daltrey needs the extra couple of bars after the scream for breath these days!

  • I worry about him, overusing that awesome voice.

    Sara

    xoxo

  • Yeah, my bad. Got a little confused ;) I just found out Steve isn't currently playing with Weller. Steve Pilgrim's taking his place for now.

  • no its alan whites brother steve white

  • i think the one on the right is a step below it sounds like Ab when you try to play it when the vid from 1978 is in Normal A

  • Amazing to hear how Daltrey's voice actually barely changed through the years and how much Townshend's style of playing remained the same. You can hear too how much 'noise' Entwistle and Moon made: the left vid was way louder as the right one!

  • why the hell does pete townshend use strats now? what's that all about?

  • These days he plays a Strat with a separate pickup and output for acoustic sounds. For instance in Who Are You, you will see him turn up that 'extra' knob on the back end of the guitar near the bridge, and his guitar will sound acoustic.

I think he made the change in the late 80's, though I don't know when he came up with the acoustic pickup.

  • It's a Fishman bridge. I think Pete added the extra volume control.

  • Wo, scary...

  • Did you know in the early days when they played the song they used a tape player to play back the synthesizer track, unfortunately the player whould sometimes mess up and go off cue, but nowdays they have a keyboard player to play the part.

  • Greatest rock band ever. That bass drum three count at the beginning is part of the synthesizer/organ backing tape they're playing to.

  • Can any guitarists on here tell me what kind of settings they think Pete used on "The Kids are Alright" vid? Every time I try to play along, my guitar sounds off for some reason.

  • I think the guitar sound is a combination of Pete using a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and a Vox tube amp. If you want to hear what it sounds like with more pedestrian equipment, listen to the Albert Hall performance here: g25YRYJpeCE

  • Not a Rick! It's possible that it's either Pete's live rig at the time, which is visible so I won't go into detail,or possibly his studio set up:A Gretsch guitar (the same one seen getting busted during closing credits in TKAA) and a Fender amp, both gifts from Joe Walsh.

  • heh. that's pretty amazing. and being a drummer.. even IF you play with a backup tape or with something in the in-ear-monitors.. it's still AMAZINGLY hard to follow it so closely. they are amazing musicians and this is good proof.

  • Actually, the drummer, Keith Moon, died a few weeks after "The Kids Are Alright" show. The 2005 performance was played by someone else. Even more incredible if you think about it- the ringer matches Keith almost spot on.

  • Zack Starkey is the Who's tour drummer. He is Ringo Starr's son, believe it or not. :)

  • No kidding! I did not know that.

  • True, but that was not Zack for that show, I know he's toured with Oasis also

  • woah i would never have known that thx! thats awesome, its a combo of the best two bands ever the beatles and the who

  • Interestingly, the bass drum hits at the beginning are synched. A 3 count, silent 4, then into the song. Been doing it that way for years, I guess. The major differences between the two is that two of the guys on stage on the left side are dead.

  • interesting that you noticed that -- yeah, that's how I managed to sync the audio tracks. If you listen to each original performance, they both had the 3-count, sounds damn near identical too.

  • Whoa, people, wake up! Whenever The Who have ever played Won't Get Food Again live, they play against a backing tape. So OF COURSE it's going to be the same, year in and year out!

  • Thanks for the explanation! That makes sense.

  • I'm not so sure they're playing against a backing tape - the keyboardist (a) is playing through the whole thing in the Live 8 performance, and (b) makes some minor but audible boo-boo's here and there. I think what they're doing is playing against a click-track. The keyboardist is probably playing the notes, but they're all going through some modulator thingamajig.

  • Check out video vEPSruBdSqk -- it shows Pete demonstrating how he wrote the part.

  • VH1 did a making of "Who's Next" and Pete specifically said they didnt like the fact that they always had to play to a backing tape because it didnt alow them to explore or jam. And he also demonstrated how he wrote it...and how hard it would be to duplicate without a tape.

  • So if it's a tape... what's Rabbit doing? It sure *looks* like he's playing the part.

  • Listen closely, he's not playing the synth line.

  • I hunted on google groups, and found this:

Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again. Only thing to note hear is that IMO these were played to the tapes (with there three thuds at the beginning of WGFA) and Rabbit was playing over and along with them. Benn felt Rabbit was playing Won't Get Fooled Again with a tape 22/12, but last night I kept a close watch on Rabbits hands (sad person that I am) and am convinced he wasn't playing the sythn, and was playing an organ sound slightly over it"

  • And this is news, why? Even Townshend himself has admitted that both Baba O'Reily AND Won't Get Fooled Again are songs where they need tapes!

  • They had the same keyboard player for both performances - Rabbit Bundrick.

  • Not true! Rabbit didn't start playing with the band until after Moonie's death. There is no keyboard player in the 1978 video.

  • Whoops! Totally right.

  • I don't even think that's a keyboard player! It may be Bob Pruden, their soundman.

  • Nice at 8:54 to see the mature Pete simply set the guitar down. Good to outgrow the theater of wrecking guitars.

  • ace band. nice vid.

  • It must get dull to play over that same synth patch for so many years...

  • Wow, that's amazing. You didn't have to make any edits or retiming to keep them in sync? It's hard to believe that they could sync that well even if they tried.

  • Nope - no edits, the only difficult part was that I'd never done video editing before, so this probably took several hours longer than it could have since I was learning Final Cut Express at the same time.

  • not really, when you think about it. They've been playing that same song for yearsandyearsandyears, so they probably have it down pretty much exactly.

  • Cool vid concept. I enjoyed that.

  • thanks mate, I had a fun time making it
