I'm 13 and learning to serve like this.. Not exactly same technique as roddick but similar.. The way he jumps and hits the ball seems so easy the way he does it!! Sucks he isn't the record holder anymore.

what i do not understand is how do they get the ball into the service box when they hit with the racket face flat of the serve. really at the moment of impact look at how the racket ace doesnt have an angle on it.

the speed is impresive, but definitely more is how his shoulder tolerates so much stress. all the rotation speed comes from the sholder. just try that only once, carefully, and you will se my point. wont be able to serve for a few days

roddick cant serve+volley as sampras did, just cause he kick it more. and to kick it u have to launch it more downward that foreward. A forward launch is required to put the serve impulsion in the direction of the volley. A "downward" launch just makes u stay still outside of court

Ivo's fastest is only slower by 2mph. On the subject Ivo's fastest serve was out wide and therefore travelled a bit further, so some reckon had it have been down the middle he would hold the record. Also he holds the record for fastest second serve at 144mph.

The point of a serve is to win your serving point, not to ace... Roddick's game is surely superior to Karlovic and it is hard to tell apart whether it's the serve or the followings strokes which gave the edge to the server, however, it is possible to trace a tendency by watching the % points won off first and second serves and on the return to evaluate the impact of a given player's serve into his/her game.

Considering this, I think Roddick's serve gives him a greater edge.

petes serve is better simply because he had the fast surfaces to get real cheap points from - unlike roddick.

but sampras' serve was better in the way that if the ball came back too him - he could volley or hit a forehand winner - roddick serves to fast to come to the net

Yes mate couldn't agree more not that it's entirely disputed but Sampras' was better, but as you say he backed it up far better with volleys etc. than Roddick usually does.

He literally trims off so much fuzz of the ball with that slice serve..The second one in this video that is..Notice the remains of the ball after the contact spread in the wind...they should employ some different rules when andy plays..put the new balls in play after every third game :))

historic serve..what impresses me the most that he doesn't have so much shoulder and trunk rotation, has a relatively short swing path but still produces some sick power.
