Wow, everything he says about free software it's amazing, a truely guiding light, without whom most of us would be forced to the will of the big software companies. Thanks for my freedom as a free software user dude!! Stallman++
funny thing is that what rms is talking about (concerning large companies) is not restricted to software companies. they _all_ do it, and the world (or at least the 'western' part of it) is starting to be only partially ruled by a government (be it 'elected' or not). it's colonial capitalism. and what are the alternatives? communism, dictatorship etc? maybe not, but nonetheless, i usually say free software is like democracy or communism. nice ideals, which tend not to work.
The problem with license servers is that, like with Richard's experience with Bell Labs, coming out of college, I had learned a proprietary 3D package called Wavefront's TAV, when Alias/Wavefront (who SGI had purchased in 1996 and merged together) released Maya they discontinued the licensing of TAV, by discontinuing the issue of keys for the license server. So even if I wanted the software I couldn't purchase it, from anyone. That's when I got Blender 3D, and advocated the use of it by all.
Blender 3D 2.5 will have key features of Maya, Softimage and Houdini, highend packages that are used cause of the ability to animate anything and retain construction history, two things Blender 2.5 is slated to support.
Closed Source = $( price * x) + license server or DRM , x = release cycle.
Closed Source software is not designed to plateau out to a working version, but resold indefinately. Free software doesn't get overdeveloped like closed.
Open Source, is a vaguely defined term, as some companies open the sources but keep a string attached, a license that permits them to rip it back when they want, like how Bell Labs pulled UNIX back and made it a commercial package, that's where Richard is coming from.
I believe Richard Stallman in everything he says, you can't develope software for the future if its blocked or you can't read what its all about I learn't my computing skills form the past from being able to read information about it it is so important the poor countries are allowed free software for them to grow and prosper
I'm so proud of this guy keep us all free we pay enough in tax's let alone on products ..
I love Stillman. He is overall doing a good thing. I think he has a distorted view of how things really are.
gnu/linux is the most technically powerful platform in many situations. The freedom which comes from the GPL is one of the big things that makes this possible.
As opposed to other consumer operating systems, it is concerned mostly with its power as a tool rather than end-user satisfaction - A much more idealist philosophy. Most people don't care so long as they can plug in their ipods.
The scholarly addicts argument which is completely off the walls. He invokes this tomfoolery right at the point where most thinking people would switch off, I therefore thought mentioning it would not really be needed.
If it wasn't for the people around him the GPL would be unusable laced with all that RMS craziness. The GPL by itself was not the first FOSS license out there. I'd like you to try and marginalize the Berkeley license for instance. On top of that, there are still things that FOSS can't seem to get right, like consistent gui guidelines. And I would not call Emacs the greatest piece of work ever written either. In other words, he brought nothing new really.
Lets not forget that Linux put the spotlight on the GPL and not the other way around. Would linux be the same or better ? Perhaps, nobody can say because in the early 90's Torvalds simple choice this license instead of another FOSS license.
@retepvosnul LOL he brought nothing? What have you "brought"?!?! He pioneered copyleft which is different from the licenses you mentioned. He didn't just create Emacs, he created GCC and many other free software programs in his day, and most importantly he has been an important part in his movement for software freedom, before him there was no movement or organized group behind FOSS. Also what the heck is this about GUI guidelines?? Gnome has guidelines and proprietary software hasn't done betta
@id1337x Ah Grammar nazi. Emacs would have been a nice OS if somebody wrote a nice texteditor for it!
Nice dogma you got there kid, it would be a shame it something were to happen to it. Like reality. Pipedreams and fairytales kid. I was talking about the real Stallman, not the mythos you are talking about, where he once coded a parser/lexer routine with his penis.
@EmperorOfTheHighway No, Nobody else started GNU. Ow, you mean the total quantity and body of work ? I'd say Torvalds is likely candidate. Jobs is high on that list and even that fucktart Gates could be a contender. Do not act like this is the fucking messiah, come on, get real.
I thought it made perfect sense, and it's the exact technique Microsoft uses. You make something expensive, give it to educational facilities at a discount, then 'leverage' your huge mindshare to force people to buy the full software.
@retepvosnul Your noble intellectual highness, can you spare some wisdom for us the poor? Show some good will. :P
"Most people" switch off because they can't think outside of the oversimplified logic or what they have been constantly, and in many forms, have been brainwashed to think. And this occurrence is called "being naturally blunt", or what I like to call them, Children of the Dark Ages. :D
@h2jazz5 No, they are funny and are usually meant for individuals with thicker skin.
Do you often get all anally retentive over 1 year old comments ? Normally, in the real world, being such an anal retentive are for the emotionally impaired (and old people in Korea).
@retepvosnul thicker skin? anally retentive? really don't see the punchline, and from the comments, i don't see anyone laughing. its just annoying and thus worth a short comment or two. arguments are dearer than some mob talk.
P.S. well, it doesn't make a difference if its a century or a year, nor does to anyone else, i wager. trivial to a reasonable person with all the info in place. i saw your comment yesterday for the first time.
would have been nice to see the whole thing, especially bruce perens who was right about to speak. if anyone has the whole thing somewhere, that would be dudical.
I was under the impression that cloning human beings in the USA was illegal.
Richard Stallman, my azz. More like Richard Franklin.
Damn right. Power to you Richard.... Stallman or Franklin......

Free Software + Licensing Small Print = Open Source

No It's not. Open Source is more than just free software with a licence. Watch Revolution OS and it explains the origins of Open Source.
