This grower is just OK. The mat makes the roots rot with too much moisture and not enough air circulation. The trays should have holes beneath to allow for air. I even tried using paper towels instead of the mat but the roots still turn very dark brown and also attracts mold. I personally am not happy about the way the grass grows in these and the money spent to find this out.
This is PERFECT for me. I don't have any 'land' to do any planting, so I LOVE this very compact, year-round (freezing midwest) way to have fresh wheatgrass. YEAH!!!! ;D Thanks for posting!

@MsFluffyChenille I was wondering, isn't using dirt better nutritionally?
Also did you contact the company about that problem? And if you did what did they suggest.
