  • I've seen almost every live VH live video out there (even before Youtube I was trying to get VHS/DVDs)...but never saw this '78 footage. Pretty F'ing amazing. To see them so fresh on the 1st tour. crazy!!!!

  • There is only one guy that everyone compares everyone else to.

That says one thing..............he is the king

  • dam, back then it was like a big kick ass party for everyone. Too bad those days are gone. These days, its all about the self centered "artist" who want to make "statemets" what every happened to just having fun?

  • just saw this footage and read comments from gandalfngrey, hey man I was there!!! went with friend cuz he was a BS freak, VAN HALEN changed his mind forever that freakin night! heard parts of album walking to school from friends but after that night I KNEW rock was about to change forever. VH rules

  • I was in the Army, stationed in Germany in 1980, when Van Halen blew thru. We showed up VERY early, and it so happened they were showing up at the same time for sound check, totally hammered of course. They walked right by us and I said, "What's up fellas! I'm from West Covina (CA)!" They stopped in their tracks and Ed said to Dave, "Look! We got a homie here!" Dave says, "Bill (or Bob?, a road manager)! Take care of these guys!" So my buds and I watched the show from the wings!! I was 19!

  • @jimistreets Dude! Thats awesome! it couldn't of happened to a better bunch of guys. It's always cool when our troops get the VIP treatment. I bet it was killer!

  • WURD 2 UR RK 'N ROLL MUTHA!!!

  • I was from that era and I remember reading about bands that VH opened for how they did not really like going on after VH cause the crowd went nuts for them (u know usually during the opening act it time to hit the bathroom) And yes black sabbath was one of the victims of VH opening show.

  • si, si. dood iz a half floater in the city pool.

  • Sabbath rocks and we know this...but VH was no joke! Especially in this era when they were hungry to take over!

  • I 1st saw them on their mean streets tour..they opened for the stones and i drove 4 hrs from ft lauderdale to orlando to catch them at the T(Tangerine)- Bowl were okay, I remember dave mooning the audience cause the writers called him an asshole..So he saluted the crowd and said this is for all the critics..The stones were clearly not at the top of their game, not even close..Mick's voice sounded hoarse and tired. It almost did not sound like him.

  • Anyone know where this was? As in, the arena?

  • I saw them 5 days later in Portland, Oregon. It was the day I got out of the Navy. I had to drive down from Seattle and just made it time for the concert. It was freakin amazing to see them and Sabbath together.

  • THE SHARK!!!

  • Dood I saw VH and BS at the mid south coliseum in memphis tennessee the night of the marine corps birthday Nov 17, 1978 - I do want to say that VH was loaded with electricity but as loud as they were, BSs PA was way louder and deper and bassier than VH and Ozzie was at top form and despite alot of people sayin VH blew them off the stage fuckin Ozzie and Sabbath were SMOKIN. I got relieved from guard duty the next day because i was still tripping from the night before

  • @rudeboywhitey what is a dood?? i think you mean dude..

  • @MOSKII58 nah I meant dood, short for doodlebug.

  • Edward had the coolest guitar moves on the planet.

  • Van Halen with David Lee Roth=the best days

  • Personally I like Black Sabbath better than Van Halen, and laugh at the notion if Van Halen "blowing" Sabbath off the stage, but I also understand that Van Halen's power/stadium rock-esque sound has much more mainstream appeal, and accept that mainstream audiences are going to like Van Halen over Sabbath.

  • Awesome band. Too bad Diamond Dave blew it at the US in 83. After seeing them in the 80 invasion, I was disappointed as was about 300,000 others. I saw Dave guest on Billy Squire in Irvine, CA - they looked too funny frolicking on stage. The Diamond Dave lineup is the classic.

  • PRIME!

  • PRIME!

  • umm, may i ask why your arguing on a van halen vid and not on each others channels, come on now people

  • this song still has the drive and depth VHs later tunes sorely lack - drum pads, Eds long-winded self-indulgent piddly diddles all sounding virtually identical, fuzz pop lyrics.

  • Wow! This is the day I was born!

  • is it me or duz eddies tone sound like dave davies

  • I like how at 1:21 on this tour was re-visited on the recent 2007/08 tour

    very cool

    it's a Zep thing.

  • @ AdUrinal...fuck off you pscychotic fuck...i am honored to join the page that hates you, with dozens, and soon to be hundreds of others.

  • It's true that VH kicked Sabbath's ass,but Ozzy was kicked out of the band for bein f**ked up all the time, even missing shows. They even asked Dave to SING FOR OZZY but Dave was like,"I don't know the words",(Crazy From The Heat,DLR,1997)

  • i saw them for my first time on this tour in Houston. They opened for Black Sabbath. After this tour Ozzy went solo cause he was embarrased Sabbath got their ass kicked by an opening act.

  • @dongtingwong Im from Houston...did they play the Summit or the Coloseum?

  • @Brian77TX They played the Coloseum. It was in November and I just turned 16. I am from Beaumont and never told my parents I was going to Houston to see Black Sabbath and Van Halen. Now I have a 16 year old.

  • @dongtingwong Awesome...I had JUST turned 1 when this show happened. Ive said this plenty of times...I was born at the wrong time. I would change lives with ANYBODY that was lucky enough to see VH back during the beginning. VH is the best rock band in US and just in history....EVER!!!

  • Ohhhhhh Yeahhh the Rock and Roll does not get any beter then this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ufffff I love to listen to Eddie at this time. The true and only master!!!

  • I can't believe that none of you VH fans don't have the Anaheim Stadium show from the very next night. I'm talkin' bout the parachute drop-in baby!

  • What a jam.

  • Poor Edder must have cried when he plugged it in.

I mean after he took the chainsaw to it.

  • he did.

  • yeah, but, man it doesnt sound bad at all, it sounds good, REALY GOOD!!!!

  • great !

  • is this when they were touring with black sabbath and blowing them off the stage ????

    this is amazing

  • @OzzyVanHalen - I saw them open for Sabbath in Oakland and back then most everyone in the crowd thought they just made a bunch of noise and the singer was annoying. We just wanted to see Sabbath. Show's what we knew ;-) 2 years later saw Def Leppard open for Pat Travers and thought the same thing. Ugh....

  • @trinzeon in Def Leppard's case you were right.

  • van halen from 78- 84 is my favorite

  • its cuz without Roth, Eddie tried to make art on his guitar. Before, Roth forced Eddie to make NOISE with just a little bit of art to it. his was mainly to compliment Roth's way of singing, and ended up making one of the most memorable guitarists of all time. until he left the band. then, they got hagar. X-(

  • TRUE!!!!!

  • Eddie's sound: fuckin' best ever!

  • A gibson neck?! I don't think so. I've never heard that. Plus you answered it yourself claiming that it's a set neck. Edward switched pick ups a lot so it may nto have had stock pups. I believe they were mighty mite pups.

  • its a stock Ibanez Destroyer that eddie pantied.

  • did you even watch the vid. you expect me to think that that is a fender strat when it has the body of a gibson explorer? no dipshit it isnt. its a Ibanez Destroyer EVH used on the first album that he later broke. do your homework assfuck

  • soz

i was talkin about his frankinstien guitar not this one

    check my page :)

  • @Phailure365 When did he break it? He cut out part of it out in '77 but he used it up until '80. It is still hanging in the control room at 5150 Recording Studios.

  • @MeanStreet1981 I read that he cut a chunk of wood out of the middle one time while modifying it and it just lost the tone that he liked it so well for.

  • @dalandser562 my bad, didn't see your post. Not sure when it happened. I wasn't born yet...

  • where did you get this from?

  • bad quality they still sound good

  • It's an Ibanez Destroyer. It was used on Van Halen one on several songs. ( you really got me, runnin with the devil, feel your love tonight and on fire) This is the infamous guitar that Ed cut a huge chunk of wood out of. You can't really see it in this vid but he cut a large section out of the back, thus affecting and some say ruining the tone of the guitar! He even claims so. It sounds so full and fat on VH1 and even still here. Great stuff.

  • what type & brand of guitar dose Eddie have?

  • looks like a gibson explorer, but knowing eddie it's probably some kind of hybrid

  • i just looked it up, it's an ibanez destroyer, they stopped making them after a lawsuit with gibson

  • u gotta be fuckin me, THEY STOPED MAKING THEM!!! ;(

  • why did they sue bro?

  • cuz they were copying the explorer, had the same body shape and headstock and everything

  • did they sue eddie or the company?

  • the company. Gibson sued Ibanez

  • alright, if u wanna get really technical, its an ibanez destroyer (btw they re-introduced them recently) that he modified. coincidentally the neck on this guitar was that of a gibson (probably an explorer, although i'm not sure how cuz that's a set neck).

  • classic stuff...thanx 4 posting!

  • Edward had the coolest moves in guitar! It was a natural extension of his body

  • Van Halen !!!

    Our DUTCH PRIDE!!!

  • Welcome to 1978 San Antonio Tx. Road trip! Stub says opener 'Van Halen' wtf is a VH? Robert Plant on steroids leaps through your stoner haze. Some alien on guitar blows your f'g mind. Literally... dropped jaws everywhere. BS comes on and EVERYONE is still shouting for VH. And we were the first back to the hometown blasting VH from our car dropping jaws EVERYWHERE. Good times.. Even BS says on their live liner notes it was a mistake to let VH open. Nuff? Eddie threw rock on its ear end of story.

  • @GandalfnGrey

    Damn straight Brother!!!

  • Cool video.

    Thanks for sharing! \o/ \o/ \o/

  • yeah but Rush are canadians so they are disqulified for being "canidiots" and Van Halen are the sole champions. Eddie cannot be touched!

  • RUSH was the only band at the time who could hang with these fuckers

  • I don't know what the problems were but he blew Sabbath off the stage before they got on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the problem's for black sabbath was eddie van halen - alex van halen - michael anthony - david lee roth there was there problem. at that time i dont give a shit what band you were if you toured with van halen your asses were in trouble.

  • Black Sabbath owns and Van Halen wouldn't exist if Black Sabbath didn't. Hell, Van Halen himself was even considering name their band "Rat Salad" after a instrumental song by Black Sabbath.

  • Did you see that tour? That is all I am saying. Sabbath sucked, they broke up weeks later. Ozzy couldn't hold a note with a handle on it. He was done for then. They were better no doubt years earlier.

  • Fine, so the tour could have been a flop for sabbath.

All im saying is that Van halen wouldn't exist without them.

  • No, they would have been there. Did they ever do a Sabbath song? No. Does he (Eddie) sound anything like Tony? No. Anything resembles them? No. You are a kid that was not even alive during this time. Take a word of an elder.

  • Eddie Van Halen wanted to name the band Rat Salad, if thats not enough of a tribute, I dont know what is. I doubt Van Halen just made there signature sound, that had to have some influences.

  • Eddie was always saying shit like tht, but he was joking around, stick to the fact, eddie grew up on blues and rock and roll, not a more heavy sound. u lost this battle kido

  • Whatever dude.

  • oh yes the 1978 world tour i saw them in may of 1978 and 30+ years later its still fresh.

eddie van halen the master, the man, the KING!

  • van halen simply BRILLIANT!

  • The Shark guitar!!!

  • From somebody who was already involved in video by 1978 - it is not unusual to find audio sliding up or down - especially because you're seeing the tracking error in the middle of the screen. Lots of cards had to align to get everything to sync up back then - and if the control track was disturbed it could go slow - or go fast - or do both at a really annoying frequency. Especially if it was reel to reel - which a lot of systems were - 3/4 tape was brand new in 1977.

  • no one cares

  • the tape is pretty old as well. But I think he's tuned to d on this tour.

  • Very cool upload-thanks. Not the overplayed

    MTV version!

  • Listen to the shriek at 4:20. You won't hear that ever again unless it's a recording!

  • youtube got rid of all the other copies of this song!!!!! this is probably the worst one!!!! dude what the hell happened???? i love this song, but god! this is a horrible copy of it!!!!

  • dang hes tuned downnnnnnnnn

  • Yeah, Ed had some serious tuning problems before he got the Floyd.

  • fuckin sweet!!! shark is in da house!

  • This show is in Fresno,California, I was there. Unreal ,it was like the most intense drug you could imagine.I'm talkin'bout the band not the columbian gold.Felt like a dream that ended way too soon. ~Donnie L. Johnson ~

  • Fuckin' brown sound. It could crunch fuckin' steel.

  • was this when they opened for black sabbath?

  • yes sir.

my dad saw em in San Antonio with Black Sabbath.

    the Municipal Auditorium.

  • Awesome!

  • Yeah, that's rock people...This is why Van Halen is what they are!

  • they put on an amazing show back then when they had the fresh new sound and had something to prove, they were unbelievable.

  • i love seein these rare 78 shows

  • Ed plays a little bit of the "You're no good" solo in this! VERY COOL!

  • Sure did. It worked too.

  • Van Halen must have been the biggest no brainer signing any manager/label ever made. Total rock stars!

  • Roth has got to wear those pants again, His current look just ain't happening

  • I agree, Dave has really toned down his style in the current tour.

  • I'm convinced that Eddie DEMANDED that he lay back. Where are the TV and print interviews (DLR's specialty)?...... Ed's girlfriend is the press agent.

  • Don't even start that stupid pointless argument, please

  • Totally! May Hagar's name never be invoked again.

  • The real VH. There is nothing better. Van Hagar didn't hold a candle to DLR era VH. Ed and Dave have some serious chemistry. Just caught there show in Philly and it was AWESOME.

  • Yes, this nicely contrasts the coolness of Roth & the boys w/ that geek, Hagar.

  • Eddie really rocks....really showing his style..in late 70's. Many guitarist copy his moves, style, dance, and technique....a real pioneerer...

  • rare video

  • great stuff
