Hard to say really, I like the look of the 1st tree better, however the 2nd might me more interesting. Depends what the judges want to see I guess. If the exposed root is not popular it may knock you out of the comp straight up, or it may cause a lot of interest.
I prefer the first one but the needles need to be tidy. I can only see a tree plant naturally but if you want to go one step further, you need to layer the nedles in detail. If this is a native tree in your home town, I beg alot of ppl can dug this up from backyard.
I like both trees. People may respond better to the first tree (black pine) since it is a style people can recognize easily. Since people may respond better to it they may pass over it just as quickly and not notice its fine details. The exposed root style is something not regularly seen in America. This will intrigue people and allow more time to be spent looking at its intricate details. That being said I still like both trees. If had to pick a winner I would choose the exposed root style.
Both are wonderful and I would take a chance and try the one with the exposed roots. Being unique will either put you at the top or out of the running right away. Go for it.
I like the second one better
