razzzor620 i agree with you , look t Billy Connoly , he doesnt have the greatest voice in the world , but he sings with pride and feeling , which is worth more then some one who sings with technique but no feelings
Musicology is not just about the feel of the music. As a piece this contains a lot of warm notes, and vibrent colorful textures. There are aspects of musicology that concerns itself with the personal characteristics of the music. I agree with your comment about how it feels, but saying that musicology is all to do with numbers is a little narrowminded, in my opinion. Sure there are some musicologists that approach the context of music from a purely statistical point of view. But its not just tht
The science of music is how notes are formed, but playing the music is art. And art will always tease science with new ideas and wonders. Art creates, Science follows creation.
And the cauld winds drive wi' winter's fury. O! are ye sleepin', Maggie? O! are ye sleepin', Maggie? Let me in, for loud the linn Is roarin' o'er the warlock craigie!
Since, Maggie, now I'm in aside ye. Now since ye're waukin', Maggie, Now since ye're waukin', Maggie, What care I for howlet's cry, For boortree bank, or warlock craigie?
Rapalje, ga zo door jullie zijn echt top! Jullie hebben echt briljante muziek! Laatst nog gezien op Keltfest ;) weer geweldig! Veel succes nog verder en greetings van Gwendolyn ! (aka GwenGuardian)
Never heard of them before, but I like them well enough to look for more. I like the Tannahills, but I think these guys could give them a run for their money.
The best I ever seen and heard in Irish music! Thanks freinds for all those wonderfull perforamces! Keep going on! That this music we love and need! Bravissimo! Greetings from Norway.

It's Scottish.
I used to play this song in my band and have some affection for it. Rapalje make quite a nice sound instrumentally (there's a hidden accordion there somewhere) unfortunately the singing and enunciation is not of the same quality.
i slightly agree with geenflauwekul only i dont like the idea of f*cking our mothers tits, i do agree with the part of nothing is good enough. well if you can do it better i would happily look at it
welll. Musicologist??? Baaaah! You cant make music a science! Its individual, its more about feeling than precision. I am doing music all my bloody life, and I can tell that I like their singing. Maybe not technically right and perfect. But what the hell??? Its more about how you feel and how you gonna get that feeling into music... And music without feeling is the one that sucks. If you want to analyze music technicaly and put it into "numbers" than it proves that you know nothing about music:)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actually yes it can and yes I can because that's what you get when an educated person gives a professional opinion. it isn't supposed to be nice. it's accurate. don't mix quality and perception.
Go on, do it.;"On irish and scottish songs and why dutch people shouldn't sing them"
Somehow i doubt there would be anyone in the scientiffic community impressed by it...
You're nothing but a orthodox celts fan. There is nothing wrong with them, just don't go putting anybody else down, please. Also don't go around parading/claiming knowledge you can't and don't have, it looks kinda stupid.
@razzzor620 I agree with razzzor620. I find it humorous when people are harshly criticizing folk music.. folk music isn't supposed to be technically flawless. The villagers of old times weren't masters of their instruments, but they played with true heart and emotion. You can hear that emotion in this music, and that's why it's powerful.
@piratebri played with passion, passion that today still persists. compare this to modern music, mostly pop imo, so many 'arrtists' where u just don't feel it, it feels hollow, soulless...
@razzzor620 please read my post below. I agree with you in the sense that music is about the feeling of music. However as a musicologist, i disagree with your opinons that musicologists "analyze music technicaly and put it into "numbers"" Musicologist concerns all aspects of music, both with its technical appeal and its aesthetic satisfaction that it provides. If you have read bad reviews from so called musiclogists, it is more than likely someone posing as one but doing it very badly
A friend once pointed out that there are singers with beautiful voices and singers without gorgeous natural instruments who know how to sing. He cited David Bromberg as an example of the latter.
These fine musicians play songs, hence, they sing along.
@marinacrvena rapalje isn't meant to be perfect, they rock live and the feeling is awesome!
musicologist is bullshit. everybody has a different taste in music, you can't say "that band is bad" cause it's only your opinion. and besides that: this is live, you can't compare this to studio-music.

cake when they will play perhaps again with Saor Patrol next year.

Dark and rainy is the night,
There's no a star in a' the carry;
Lightnings gleam athwart the lift,
And the cauld winds drive wi' winter's fury. O! are ye sleepin', Maggie? O! are ye sleepin', Maggie? Let me in, for loud the linn Is roarin' o'er the warlock craigie!
Are Ye sleeping Maggie
Fearfu' soughs the boortree bank,
The rifted wood roars wild and drearie,
Loud the iron yett does clank,
And the cry o' howlets makes me eerie.

Aboon my breath I daurna speak
For fear I rouse your waukrife daddie;
Cauld's the blast upon my cheek, -
Arise, arise, my bonnie lady!
She op'd the door, she let him in;
He coost aside his dreepin' plaidie;
Blaw your warst, ye rain and win',
Since, Maggie, now I'm in aside ye. Now since ye're waukin', Maggie, Now since ye're waukin', Maggie, What care I for howlet's cry, For boortree bank, or warlock craigie?

Well marinacrvena, why don't you record this very song? show us for once and for all that you are 'better' then this is all settled.
I always love the music and the atmosphere during the live shows :D that is way more important than flawless music. It's also the spirit

It isn't about the pronounciation and accent but about the quality of their singing, which is poor.

i am a musicologist. Deal with it. Vocals suck. And I won't charge you my professional oppinion.

Maybe, but these are Dutch singers, singing in a language and accent not native to them.
I don't know where you are from, but I dare you to record yourself right now, singing in a tongue you are not fully native with.
