@jecka1982 The doctor did not tell Mary because in those days, women didn't have the same rights that exist today. Women weren't told about many things, including their own health issues! The husband or father (whichever was the situation) was told. If the husband or father chose to let the female know anything, then it was considered HIS right to do so. VERY VERY unfair, sexist things! But that is how things used to be. Watch the Green Mile. Same shit where the wife had a brain tumor.
@steadybeau I just assumed it was because Mary was a child and the doctor felt that her father had to be the one to tell her. What about the episode when doc Baker assumed that Jack (the dog) may have had rabies? Laura wasn't told, but Charles and Caroline were. I agree that there was a lot of sexism in those days. It wasn't really anyones fault though :l
@jecka1982 Because Laura didn't like for people to see her cry, and she felt guilty for the way she behaved. But it wasn't her fault, because to be fair she didn't know.
@jecka1982 Real Mary Ingalls never cried actually. She accepted the facts. But it is more believable than Melissa sue anderson cries.Laura ran away cause she was very upset and sad for her sister, her pa and believed it was her fault.
Poor Charles is so in pain that he cannot control himself anymore and yells at Laura. He had no intention to yell at her but he's so despaired that his emotions are stronger.
@fisteberg I think he could control himself better than he did - he just didn't try. He's such a jerk sometimes. I have no sympathy for him at all in this scene. And Caroline isn't any better. I hate how "prim and propper" she is all the time, makes me wanna puke.
@GreenAshR47 have you at all had a relative or a close friend to go through such tough times? i fortunately havent but i cant believe to imagine how awful it must be for the person and their family. This might just be a show but its happening everyday.
Ok I'll shut up now! I was just surprised by ur remark
@jecka1982 Do you even know what I was referring to? The way he yelled at Laura. And not just in this episode. Did you see the pilot movie when he yelled at her for disobeying him even though she had good reason? Everyone else in the family is expected to behave and have perfect manners, but when he gets upset, it's ok for him to lose his temper because he's the man of the house?? Ok yes it strikes a nerve with me because of memories from my own childhood.
Michael Landon could switch on the water works like nobody's business. There will never be another actor who could cry like him.
Melissa Sue Anderson was robbed at the Emmys. She should have won for this story arc, as well as the later episodes involving the fire at the blind school that killed her son and Mrs. Garvey.
The reason that Melissa Sue Anderson got this blindness storyline (despite the fact that Mary did go blind in real life) had more to do with the fact that she did not like the actor that played John Edwards (Mr. Edwards' son) who was supposed to be her Little House husband, and give her a romantic lead storyline. Subsequently, Michael Landon had the character go blind. (Alison Arngrim talks about this in her book, Confessions of A Prairie Bitch)
Mary goes through a lot for heaven sakes. She almost dies in the hospital after the horse kicked her, then she goes blind, the stands by as her baby dies in a fire. Sheesh!
@blueangel123ful you are talking about the times when actors or celebrities actually had to graduate with degrees, go through count less cattle calls, pay for expensive acting coaches, etc......but now we have reality girls who can over dramatize ...
@mkfan5858 Melissa sue anderson was brilliant as Mary on LHOP. One of her best epi's, in my opinion, is "May We Make Them Proud" where she losing her baby in a fire.... It was heartbreaking to watch, but an award-winning performance by the actress (if I do say so myself).
Thank you for uploading this video and other of Little House. I grew up watching this and love this show. I cried so many times. When Mary lose her baby in the fire, and oh my God when Albert dies. I have a question the Actress that played Mary did she really go blind.
@mkfan5858 You're welcome for the vids..... And to answer your question, the actress who played Mary never went blind. In fact, after LHOP and a few other small roles, the Melissa Sue Anderson eventually left Hollywood to focus on her family. I have to admit, I was almost convinced the actress was truly blind too... lol
I should have asked my pastor the same question: I had to tell my daughter he dad was never coming back from work the day he disappeared, on September 11, 2001. What was I supposed to tell her the reason was?
I ended up saying I have no idea why, b/c I don't, and neither does anybody else. But they all sure love to come up w/ every stupid reason there could possibly be and try to pass it off as intelligent.
@vickiormindyb Oh my, how sad.... My condolences... I am very saddened to hear about your loss. My he rest in peac and my thoughts are with you and your family.
@colincoolness i know first she had to get an operation then she went blind had a miscarriage got in a stage coach accident and lost her baby in a fire! and had to leave her family and move to new york!

@BeachComber1977 I distinctly remember a scene where Charles tells Caroline! And there are also a couple of scenes missing involving Charles taking Mary to Doc Baker first, and Doc sends them to the eye doctor. I wonder what else is missing?
Wait, where is the part where Charles tell Caroline. I remember because she starts to cry and he tells her that he thinks the doc was wrong because Mary commented on how pretty the birds and flowers were on their way home ....(?)
@BeckEis That's one of the series' many deleted scenes that have been cut to make room for commercials. I think it's on YouTube somewhere (because that's where I've seen it before) but I think YouTube may have deleted it due to copyright reasons. ):
@peaceloveandtofu5 Yes there are deleted scenes especially the scene when charles tells Caroline about mary's eyes and the doctors words. So bad these scenes were cut for commercials.
@newyork9284 If I'm not mistaken, it was when her baby brother was born. She got jealous because of all the attention the baby was getting and wished he would die and he did. She felt so guilty that she ran away from home.
In the past, one of the common outcomes of a serious case of scarlet fever in early childhood was the loss of both hearing and sight. Helen Keller was born with full sight and she got scarlett fever at the age of 19 months, she lost her sight and hearing from it. Just because something can't cause a certain thing now doesnt mean it couldnt before. Medicine has come a long way, thank god.
THESE DAYS its rarely serious. In the days before antibiotics, there was no way to treat the infection. Scarlet fever was a major child killer at the end of the 19th century. Even if not fatal, the condition could lead to many different complications as the bacterial toxin produced by Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as the bacterial infection itself, spread widely through the body, causing damage to important tissues and organs.
no he shouldn't have been yelling at her. Laura didn't know about Mary's eyes. she was just frustrated they were being so nice to Mary but she had to do all the chores. Laura reacted like any child would react. I can't blame Charles either but for you to say Laura needed it at that point is wrong.
@steadybeau thats what i dont understand. the doctor told charles and not mary. mary was the one who was going through it and not understanding why she couldnt read etc.
@steadybeau i know its been 2 years since u wrote that bt what i dont understand is why the doctor didnt tell mary the news. i mean she was the one going through it and had no idea why she was losing her sight
Mary actually became blind due to a stroke, not scarlet fever like everyone thinks. However, having scarlet fever and a case of measles I think brought on the stroke.
In the true story of the Ingalls (not the books), Mary was blind from a young age and she never actually married. I was disappointed when I head of how the real story was. It made for good t.v to have Mary start a blind school and marry the fictional Adam. If I remember correctly Laura looked after Mary during her life in the real life situation.
no mary became blind just around the same time. old enough that she could go to college. she wasnt very young. she was in her teens, i'd say late teens if anything. perhaps around 16 or 17.
as a matter of fact she gets scarlet fever at the age of 14 and within a few years loses her eyesight completely. they describe scarlet fever as a rly bad case of measles. she also got a stroke a lil while after so that didnt quite help
When Pa told Mary she was going blind and she was upset it broke my heart! :( Poor Mary! :( If she hadn't of gone blind she wouldn't of met Adam. :) Altho to bad there was no Adam in real life. :(
I feel SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sorry 4 Mary, but she does meet Adam.
mrtelevision never ceases to amaze me with his LHOP knowledge... Are you sure you're weren't an LHOP guru in another life...?? ; ) lol... Thanx so much for your LHOP knowledge as always! : )
I feel sorry for Mary when she goes blind in this episode. To be blind means you won't ever see your loved ones, your friends, or watch beautiful landscapes ever again; despite still hearing them. I almost cried. But did the real Mary Ingalls in real life go blind as well?
Yes, she did. But it was in a much shorter time period. She had scarlet fever, just like in this episode, but as far as I know, it took only a matter of days/weeks for her to go completely blind.
Thanks so much for putting up this vid! I loved this show when I was a kid - I cried so hard on this episode; I still do! Mary was my favorite character and my heart broke when she had to go to the blind schoold - I was afraid we wouldn't see her again!
I wish TV could still be like this - I wouldn't have to worry about what the kids were watching!
I know...or what the kids were doing too! Too many of those damned video games and not enough hopskotch and tree fort building...God..I really miss those days!
This epi is so sad. I can't stand to hear Charles yell at Laura in this epi or even to bear witness to Mary going blind. its all so ver heart-breaking to watch. But must say the acting is SUPERB by all the actors during this epi. Just brilliant!
Yes, that is all heartbreaking! Charles must be horrified inside. That is scary when he yells at Laura.
By the way, do you have the episode called "The Angry Heart"? That's another good one. It's about an abused boy who grows up to be a bully, but in the end Charles reforms him.
The episode is sad. But the director/producer, would always make an episode of saddness, or when someone dies, or something terrible happens, when the number of people watching would go low. And for some reason, decided to make Mary Blind. Which I do have to say, it was sad. But they all acted it out extrodinary!
Melissa Sue Anderson DID NOT go BLIND IN REAL LIFE. I read her Wikipedia, and there is nothing there about her losing sight. Read and get educated: en . wikipedia . org / wiki / Melissa _ Sue _ Anderson
In reality, Mary lived the rest of her life with Laura and there was no Adam...but I like this version better. THANKS FOR THE UPLOADS keep em coming! :) My family and I used to watch this show together.
You said that Mary lived with Laura for the rest of her life in real life. So the real Mary never married? Did the real Almonzo have a niece Jenny that came to live with the Wilders when she became an orphan?
I read a book that said Mary lived the rest of her life with Ma until she died. Then Mary lived with Carrie until Mary's death in 1928. She was only 63.
Yes, they did. It's mentioned in By the Shores of Silver Lake. Laura, too, had a son who died, just like in Child With No Name. In real life, all of the Olesons eventually moved to New York, not just Nellie. No Nancy.
yeah, the Ingalls did have a son in real life, than it died just like karthelow said and same thing with Laura. I also read in a book that Carrie never married

Why is Laura always running away?
JackOffJul 3 years ago 4
A lot of LHOP characters do that on the show... lol
Emotional2000 3 years ago 3
@JackOffJul Probably that's how she handles a situation at the time.

When Pa told Mary she was going blind and she was upset it broke my heart! :( Poor Mary! :( If she hadn't of gone blind she wouldn't of met Adam. :) Altho to bad there was no Adam in real life. :(

why did cahrles snap at larua
carmesundae 3 years ago 4
Probably b/c of the hurt and frustration he felt b/c he knew Mary was losing her eyesight... : (
Emotional2000 3 years ago
Because that was un-called for. Well.. That's what I think, anyway
iluvnj22 3 years ago
Charles snapped at Laura due to his emotional pain of knowing that Mary was going to lose her sight; he didn't really mean to yell at her.

I feel sorry for Mary when she goes blind in this episode. To be blind means you won't ever see your loved ones, your friends, or watch beautiful landscapes ever again; despite still hearing them. I almost cried. But did the real Mary Ingalls in real life go blind as well?
Disneyfan82 3 years ago 8
Yes, but she wasn't scared.
cbsteffen 3 years ago
Yes, she did. But it was in a much shorter time period. She had scarlet fever, just like in this episode, but as far as I know, it took only a matter of days/weeks for her to go completely blind.

i broke dow crying when he told hr she was loosing her sight... but i was happy when she bacame a teacher in the show

SchraderRose 3 years ago
I know...or what the kids were doing too! Too many of those damned video games and not enough hopskotch and tree fort building...God..I really miss those days!

This epi is so sad. I can't stand to hear Charles yell at Laura in this epi or even to bear witness to Mary going blind. its all so ver heart-breaking to watch. But must say the acting is SUPERB by all the actors during this epi. Just brilliant!
Emotional2000 4 years ago
Yes, that is all heartbreaking! Charles must be horrified inside. That is scary when he yells at Laura.
By the way, do you have the episode called "The Angry Heart"? That's another good one. It's about an abused boy who grows up to be a bully, but in the end Charles reforms him.
tennille1998 4 years ago 4
Do you have the episode where the blind school catches fire and Mary's baby dies?
bigbill1991 4 years ago
he didn't mean to. he's just really sad that his eldest daughter is going blind
AndersonGish 4 years ago
The episode is sad. But the director/producer, would always make an episode of saddness, or when someone dies, or something terrible happens, when the number of people watching would go low. And for some reason, decided to make Mary Blind. Which I do have to say, it was sad. But they all acted it out extrodinary!
Susany131 4 years ago
Mary went blind in real life so thats another reason why they made her loose her sight.
cuddlemonkey98 3 years ago
No.. she didnt go blind in real life =/
Susany131 3 years ago
Yes she did
Bromden75 3 years ago
The actress didn't go blind. The real Mary Ingalls was blind. There was no Adam though.

Yes she did! I read about it on wikipedia - you read the story by yourself!
Creature1989 3 years ago
Melissa Sue Anderson DID NOT go BLIND IN REAL LIFE. I read her Wikipedia, and there is nothing there about her losing sight. Read and get educated: en . wikipedia . org / wiki / Melissa _ Sue _ Anderson
VEN0MOUSGARDEN 2 years ago 2
Yes, you're right. The actress didn't go blind, but the real Mary Amelia Ingalls did.

In reality, Mary lived the rest of her life with Laura and there was no Adam...but I like this version better. THANKS FOR THE UPLOADS keep em coming! :) My family and I used to watch this show together.
Leeszah 4 years ago
You said that Mary lived with Laura for the rest of her life in real life. So the real Mary never married? Did the real Almonzo have a niece Jenny that came to live with the Wilders when she became an orphan?
tennille1998 4 years ago
I read a book that said Mary lived the rest of her life with Ma until she died. Then Mary lived with Carrie until Mary's death in 1928. She was only 63.
lizzibear59 4 years ago
Mary died young. What a shame.
tennille1998 4 years ago
Jenny wasn't real either.
karthelow 4 years ago
What a shame. I liked Jenny. What Albert? Was he real? I heard some place that he wasn't. But I'm not sure if that's true or not.
tennille1998 4 years ago
Me too. Albert wasn't real either. It was just the four girls (Laura, Mary, Carrie, Grace) in real life.
karthelow 4 years ago
Oh, okay. In real life, did the Ingalls have a baby boy that died shortly after being born?
How about the Olesons? I'm pretty sure Willie and Nellie were real. But was Nancy real too?
tennille1998 4 years ago
Yes, they did. It's mentioned in By the Shores of Silver Lake. Laura, too, had a son who died, just like in Child With No Name. In real life, all of the Olesons eventually moved to New York, not just Nellie. No Nancy.
karthelow 4 years ago
That's sad that the Ingalls' and Laura both had a son that died in real life. Did Laura's son die as a baby? If so, that's the ultimate tragedy!
tennille1998 4 years ago
yeah, the Ingalls did have a son in real life, than it died just like karthelow said and same thing with Laura. I also read in a book that Carrie never married
theeunborn 4 years ago
That's sad that both Charles and Caroline and Laura (as well) both had a son that died as a baby. Very tragic.
tennille1998 4 years ago
I Know.
