This song was actually written by Keith Whitley. I think it was based around the chorus that Inez Andrews and Mahalia Jackson recorded.

The Inez Andrews version was recorded in 1962, and is still the best version there's ever been. And yes Mahalia Jackson did write this song. Doris Akers sang it too.
