She is so GREAT here! This is my favorite version of this song, much better than the Capitol recording because of the spontaneous live quality in her voice. She lives and acts her lyrics better than anyone ever did or could. Great song and the greatest singer that ever lived.
Ill advised TV venture??? Thank god for that venture. It provided us with some of the most thrilling Garland performances that exit on film. Check out A COTTAGE FOR SALE. How bout THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC....I could go on!
And so could legions of Garland fans. HOORAY FOR THE JUDY GARLAND show!!!
i believe this would be better un orchestrated, i heard this in a piano bar, only vocals and piano, and it was better than all this overblown stuff. judy is good dont get me wrong, i just dont like the trumpets and xylophones omg
You may think that Judy's TV show was risky, but we have to remember that many of her best performances are preserved in tapes of that show. Plus, today's generation needs to look at this kind of work and realize that it was LIVE ... no lipsync. She WAS one of a kind. Dennis
No one could Love this Woman? No one could just let her sing and protect her? She was a tiny thing and even if she had a drinking problem I have not seen it in any of these songs.God you took her too soon but then you knew what would happen here on earth. love you Barb...
Judy really looked and sounds great here! She is really "on"! I wish I was old enough to have been able to around back then when Judy Garland was alive and on TV. I was a little bit over a year old when she left us. We both are Gemini and I re read the Gerald Frank 1975 Biography titled "JUDY" it's so much more accurate than Gerald Clarke's "Get Happy" bio.
Alan Livingston the President of Capitol Records at the time when Judy recorded with them said that Judy would go in & maybe work a few days & what we heard was pure Judy. They didn't use the tricks used today to make these "singers sound better than they actually are. Back then Capitol records wanted her among their roster of Legendary singers.Judy would go in & sing without any rythymn tracks etc. Just Judy & the Orchestra & that's what separated the pros from the phonies.
Again, it's a great example of a mega-star doing a song LIVE with LIVE orchestra before a LIVE audience. Could not be better. Even the mistakes were better back then. I'd love to know who did the arrangement. Wow.
Judy did lots and lots of her best work, singing, on her TV show. I wish they would put it back on the air -re-runs-. Do you have any idea how many people would tune in, perhaps get their kids hip to it. That would be amazing,
@TheElissaS I have always thought that with the lack of imagination on TV today which is evident by all the reality crap that every network has on all day long, that they should do a weekly Classic TV line up. CBS used to be called the "Tiffany Network" because of it's High Quality programming for decades. I am sure that if they ran The JUDY GARLAND Show and her other specials along with other great performers, that today's younger audiences would see what real talent is.
@moonlightdriver800 I guess everyone has their own preference for a cover of a song. But I couldn't agree more about Judy's sexiness and her understated sophistication in this clip. This was cultivated by Bill Colleran the producer of the Garland TV series, and he reversed the earlier Judy-as-girl-next-door image promoted by earlier producers. Here, Judy is not a stooge to the imbecile Van-Dyke, but is unleashed in all her star glory.
Love this entire concert! You're right, this is one of the best songs that Judy sings during the hour with Vic Damone! Music by Burton Lane for the show "Finian's Rainbow"...it's has a tri-tone so watch out. LOL! Ty for the post:)
How good is Judy here? This version of "Old Devil Moon" is as good--if not better!--than the Capitol album version, recorded some years before, when her voice was in its full peak. This is one of her greater moments on that ill-advised TV venture.
Oh man, can you imagine how awesome this performance was in person? They captured Judy well, but the not the band so much. I imagine the full experience was mind blowing.
@heeter71 Fot this shot, they've got a soft focus and a filter on the camera and it makes her look great. Other bits of the show weren't filmed as attractively for her. Still, I wouldn't miss a bit of any of it!
Don't forget that Yip Harburg wrote the show Finian's Rainbow and lyrics to Old Devil Moon.
