  • Good and bad Mr. Smith, however I will watch a bad film from you anytime. It's relative, I even forgive your obsession with Ben Affleck.

  • so did this film make money or not?

  • @methrt3. Your head is clearly so far up yer pooper yer seing chocolate coverd pretzels. You know hate and thats about it.

  • Kevin Smith is pretty overrated, hit or miss. He seems to be under the impression that he's God's gift to the film world and a big whiny baby. He gets mad every time a critic doesn't like his movie. He thinks "they don't get it" and it's "not for them". I agree that critics are idiots, but a spade is a spade.

  • Boy did it work he payed for the movie before its released. It deserves oscars for parks and leo and kevin smith. It wotks alot of people are self releasing flicks not sure how itl do for others but kev was the director to doit for sure

  • I wish he'd stop trying to make out that $4 million is peanuts. Ed Burns just shot two movies for less than $150,000. $4 million is a big budget compared to what a lot of other people have to work with.

  • My mum walked into my room at 06:14

  • Red state was great, I legitimately feel bad for torrenting it.

Kevin Smith is a genius, and I'm more than glad to see him broadening his horizons.

  • @ShmeeSLG ME TOO! BUT Im damn sure buying the dvd!

  • Red state was terrible. He should have schemed better character development and a coherent storyboard instead of spending all his time talking about himself. Everytime he is on Opie and Anthony blah blah blah weed blah blah blah corporations.

  • @moviefannnnnn: He already said that his next movie is his last anyway.

  • i wish red state was better. kevin smith is losing his touch and im a big fan of his. if his next movie flops like this one then i say he should quit the film business and just stick with his smodcast stuff cause thats what he seems to focus on more now anyway.

  • I hope this movie makes a fortune and revolutionises the film industry. Kevin Smith is a true inspiration to all indie filmmakers.

  • Smith has no commitment, you can see that in his body and you see that from his movies. He has a great talent for creating fun and entertaining movies and view askewuniverse was really fun up until maybe Dogma and Clerks 2.

The movie business is about trust and commanding admiration, Smith has to really get things together. Perhaps make a decent comedy which isn't in the viewaskewniverse? Perhaps get fitter, so that in his next movie that could catch some publicity?

  • @Kingportable Who the fuck are you? A troll? If not, you're pathetic. And here's why:

You made your way to a video about the background of a movie that you DIDN'T like. Which means that you have so much free time, you actually ran out of things to look up that you enjoy.

And then, to boot, you rattle off inane, meaningless bullshit like "get fitter, so that his next movie can catch some publicity", and comments about his weight. Fat jokes, really? "KingPortable: Pioneer". Fucking twat.

  • @jasonbickford79 Red State is a fucking GENIUS movie. Michael Parks is my new hero. He should stay in character and create a YouTube channel where he preaches sick religious bullshit. It would probably be better than Edward Current, and I love Edward Current. John Goodman was good in Red State as well.

  • @xgoxdiexxx I doubt he is the only one who can't handle criticism in the movie business. Hell, many critics can't even proper criticize and make a living of it. So why not let him complain about critics so now and then.

He is however one of the few who is smart enough to actually have communication with his fans/community. Now, if a part of that is also bickering, so be it. A lot of the fans even love it, because he doesn't hide the fact that he's human.

  • Kevin Smith spends the majority of his time bickering about critics not liking his movies or throwing a fit for weeks/20 podcasts because he got kicked off a plane. He should spend more time making sure his movies are actually good. I also heard something about how he wants to go into early retirement. He really really thinks hes the greatest thing ever...he cant handle criticism.

  • Mall rats was fucking awesome too.

A great comedy and i enjoyed every minute of it.

  • @alexicon89 I wasn't a fan of chasing amy though but that's just my opinion, well made etc but not my taste.

  • For the love of "@$) some people here need to finish school!!!! You know what im talking about!

  • Cecil B Demented Forever !

  • @docventure where did I say he wouldn't make his money back on this small movie? Anyway you sound like an angry young man and I hope you get laid real soon. x

  • I was there! this movie kicked ass and I can't wait for it to come out to theatres everywhere. It is the most grim, but exciting horror/thriller I have seen

  • We need more fat masterbaiting stoners int the movie industrie!

  • I love his movies, and I support independent film, especially given how studios often ruin film nowadays. That said, I do not think this is going to go well. This seems like a desperate act by somebody who has a conviction that people will be sensible, kind of like when Howard Stern moved to satellite radio. In theory, it ought to work, but most people go for what is convenient, rather than artistic. I think he will just wind up broke and forced to return to conventional films. Good luck, Kevin.

  • heres a dumb ass question. will red state be on dvd or this is just a movie only played in theaters? cuse i like to see this movie iv seen every movie Kevin Smith has made and played inn. i enjoy his work.

  • i got really scared at the start of this video. i want to get into film making and his insight made me contemplate giving up my passion but when he said what he is doing after his last movie i was inspired once again. I know who i am taking my films to

  • This is the most inspirational speech I'll ever hear.

  • I think your missing my point, I'm happy to see my cash going to him instead of 4 million dollars going to advertising that the studio system puts together. He makes a great statement , it doesn't make sense in going the studio route when your movie cost are low even a few million. You end doubling your debt for no real reason. If anyone deserves to make money it's the people who made the movie.

  • @Cluebert Google Hollywood Accounting for details. Sad state of affairs that even Harry Potter is set up to lose money.

  • Great news. Red State is in the "black" as its made money through pre sales and the road show they did. Congrats Kevin Smith.

  • Revolutionizing film distribution. You've just seen the future. Well done Mr. Smith. Well done indeed.

  • I think a billion was spent advertising Iron Man 2.

  • I fear God. You better believe I fear God.

  • I'm 13 years old - I just saw RED STATE last night in KC and you gotta check out my video blog I posted up on what I thought of seeing him in person, protesting the Phelps finatics & seeing his awesome new flick! search it at : RED STATE movie Review KANSAS CITY or look me up BILLY'S BLOG page!

  • So I guess its my turn. First of all, I enjoy Kevin Smith's films. What I'm sick of is the double-edged stigma about watching his films such as either being a d-bag who looks down on those who don't watch his films because of his witty dialog, or being labeled as someone with no intellect to speak of because I watch his films. I have "fun" watching his movies with my friends. People can say he's a "hack" or "never had any talent" but I don't care.

  • @oldschooler85 i agree with u, no1 should b labelled as b-ing less than any1 else due 2 watching his movies. There's nothing wrong with watching a movie, just 4 the fun of it...

  • im sooooo ready for this !!

good on ya , kev !

  • "if i knew i had to learn business I would have stayed home masterbating" I am a filmmaker and was a major fan of smith. this sounds like cry baby Bs. he didn't complain when he was collecting those checks from the industry he scornes. Damn. it's a shame.

  • Kevin is RIGHT ON THE MONEY with the things he is saying.

And he is also right on time.

The arguments against pirating have always been that the artists gets shafted, but listen to Kevin Smith, the artists are being fucked over as it is.

Internet distribution is the future, and out there somewhere is a guy with a functioning idea about how u can distribute movies over the internet with a model that connects the creator directly to the audience,

    Fuck the middle men.

  • This is rad.

  • This could be the beginning of something great.

  • As far as independent film-things have radically changed since Clerks. There are a lot of us trying to be succesful film makers but don't have access to millions of dollars. A typical film festival only screens higher budget films. We just wrapped on a full length film. I personally spent $15,000. That is a lot of cash but unfortunately no one will touch the film. We sold out three nights in a row at a major theater but every film fest has rejected our film. small change movie.

  • A one trick pony with boringly transparent dialogue screaming "look at me - I am so, so insightful!" But his writing is not witty, or insightful, it's hackneyed nonsense, filled with terrible art school contrivances. He is popular with the pseudo-intellectual set and sad emo teens - and that's about it.

  • @tsmithla sounds like you lump yourself in with the Truly Intellectual Set. tell me, which films do you recommend? the most intellectual film i've seen is secret ballot, and it got NO distribution here. i attribute its absence to a flawed distribution system in north america. also, i don't think kevin has any interest in making intellectual films. he's a storyteller. i see a guy who wants to fix or replace a broken system, and that, to me, shows some intellect, even if his films don't.

  • @apagoogoo Well, I try not to lump myself in with the bogus intellectuals (too many in the film biz already). I just think he is too preachy and his films have a weird quality of arrogance. Now, if I was of his mindset I might like his stuff; but I’m not, and I don’t. The truth? He screwed up - he's not good at 'horror.' The market for off-beat films is gone. Smith tries to protect his pride (I don’t blame him for that) but he could have really told the truth here and he only partly does.

  • @tsmithla How would you know? Have you even seen this movie, bro? Can't do Horror. You don't know what you are talking about.

  • @tsmithla Again. You have no idea what you are talking about. Stop talking shit.

  • @tsmithla so true.

  • I admire Kev's sentiments but he's being naive. His model for making money back like he outlines is only realistic on such a small budget movie. He's talking about making half of 4 mill back on a first tour and the rest on a 2nd 'if' he pulls enough interest on this, which is a big ask.

What about the bigger scale stuff he surely wants to get into later on? Is he really going to make a 30-40 mill budget movie and try and scrape it back with a tour? He'd be touring a long time. I want to k

  • @Vincecouk He's already said in previous Q & A's that he prefers to do smaller budget films. He also noted that because of earlier experiences he'd prefer not to do huge budget films.

  • Comment removed

  • @Vincecouk Hey, guess what? He's on his way to making the money back. What now? Hm?

Good to see the retard naysayers online eating their words. Motherfuckers.

  • love kev but jesus ...

we have all heard the gretzkey shit and the "one cock in the mouth away from being gay " enough ...

  • Don't like his movies, but he is 100% right on with that. Movies can now be much more interactive fun marketing strategies all around. You can completely customize your whole movie instead of letting buttfucks edit a trailer or commercials. It's my movie! I know how to advertise it. Not you. We're doing this shit with a movie we're about to shoot. Gonna build in a $45,000 film print into the budget. Just taking that around to theaters here in this area will surely make most of that back.

  • @brennan61 $45,000 for ONE film print? Dude, you are getting raped. I'm spending close to maybe $4000-$6000 on 3-4 prints. PM me.

  • SNOOTCH TO THE NOOTCH 2011.

  • This is Kevin's Jerry MacGuire moment.

  • Kevin Smith's couldnt direct a piss up in a brewery the fat cunt

  • Go Kevin.

  • I'm so insanely inspired by this man.

  • we met you at comicon in nyc...& have been followoing you ever since as fanz.. yaay for u..

  • HELL YEAH!!!!!!

  • This is inspirational. I completely agree with Kevin Smith on this. As a creative person in this industry you get screwed left right and centre and the studios are the worst of the lot. The process shouldn't really contain the studios in the first place. It should be exactly the way Smith is selling this film, made by the production crew then shown by an exhibitor. The tour is a fantastic idea my only lament is that I wont get the opportunity to see it.

  • BUNG!! (ing)

  • well this is fucking inspiring BIG THUMBS UP

  • Snootch to the Nootch!

  • I'd pay 200$ + just to make the statement kevins talking about a success

  • He's really got a set of balls, to charge his fans that kind of money to go see him speak and show his movie. Seriously. $143 a ticket?!? Really? He should treat his fans better than that. Hollywood has given up on him already. He should not alienate his fans who stood by him through every half-baked movie he's put out over the last few years, by charging them ridiculous ticket prices.

  • @squareonenyc Do you realize that he not MAKING people pay $143 to go to the screening? Also people can wait until October 2011 and buy on DVD or see it in a theater for $8-15. Not EVERYONE wants to see it early but for the people that do it's gonna cost a price. It's the same price as many band's "meet and greet" so it's really not that bad.

  • @squareonenyc Are you kidding? If you're a Kevin Smith fan, $143 essentially means you get to 1. See Red State, 2. Watch a 4-5 hour Q&A with Kevin Smith, and 3. Watch Michael Parks do a Q&A. That's well worth it. Plus, the movie is officially out in October. He acknowledges that. But Kev's live shows are soooo worth it. They are hugely interactive, epic, hilarious and very engaging performances. Purchasing my tickets asap.

  • @squareonenyc Interesting, because i was never a Kevin Smith fan until now. I hope he succeeds because it could change the movie industry.

  • Kevin Smith FTW

  • Name another director that created an entire universe

  • @longislandcitizen Joss whedon?

  • How is the movie?

  • this guy could screw himself here or it could be a fuckin great idea

  • check out GAWD BLESS AMERICA trailer. It is doing this model of distribution without any P&A dollars spent

  • @cbronsetyouthere because Blake freeman is awesome

  • Comment removed

  • Soooo he's opening up his own distribution facility. Like a ton of directors ALREADY EMBEDDED IN THE INDUSTRY already do.

I think his heart is in the right place, but he is INCREDIBLY naive if he thinks that Average Joe with no extra money or existing fanbase could even fathom going from city to city charging jacked up prices to people that don't know who the fuck he is.

This might work for HIM, but for everyone else, this is just smoke and mirrors to give attention to his movie...

  • @ktownshutdown21 - but that's his point - that the average guy can eventually get his film distributed without having to spend millions. Yes, he has the advantage due to his name, but I think his main point is that he wants to use twitter and other social media to sell his movie instead of using the studio's method. The messed up thing is that the people attending thought they were going to bid on his movie but he just wasted their time.

  • Who is bashing him?

I'm searching the comments but I don't see it.

  • I dont see what was so bad with cop out.

  • Comment removed

  • Kevin Smith is screwing his true fans by charging $60 ($75 after TM service charges) or more per ticket to see a movie. At Radio City, top ticket price is $143 after service charges. I know he's trying to buck the Hollywood system, but it shouldn't come at the expense of the people who love him.

  • @squareonenyc You get more than just a movie, you get a whole night. Kevin Smith, special guests etc, will have Q&A's and that sort of thing. I paid $60 to watch Mr Smith talk for 4 hours about shit and it was one of the most interesting 4 hours I've had in my short life. So to get that, AND Red State, you should consider yourself lucky. If you were a "true fan" you'd pay whatever price to just be in a room with the man.

  • KEVIN SMITH is GREAT!

  • This is insanly genius. People are basically paying to see him still, paying to see him do his comedy, except now he tacks on a movie to that and makes all the profit.

  • Kevin Smith I salute you...enough respect for showing the path to a film making method outside of the studio system... Hollywood shouldn't stifle creativity, and make films a business instead of an artistic craft....A true inspiration...looking forward to the next SMODCAST.

  • Well worth the three hours of standing in frigid Park City air. This was the only film I wanted to see during my visit and was lucky enough to sit next to Michael Parks. Smith is calling out the indie filmmakers of today for selling out on an idea on filmmaking with no help from large corporations inside the film industry. If you are willing to pour yourself into making it, then you should be just as concerned with getting to audiences without large corporations.

  • Some dude leaves the room @ 5:17 - right after Kevin "wins" the auction! LOL!

  • I was in full support of Kevin Smith, until I saw how much he's charging to see this stupid movie. Have you seen the ticket prices for his Red State tour?

At Radio City, they're charging up to $125 ($143 after service charges). Who would pay that for a movie and a Q&A with Kevin Smith?!?

  • @squareonenyc Kevin Smith fans?

  • FUCK YEAH KEV! PUNK FUCKING ROCK FILM-MAKING!!!

  • I would argue that the only reason Kevin Smith is even doing this is because he is no longer the critical darling he once was. He's not doing this for the industry. He's doing it to get publicity for a film that would not have gotten any notice if it were just released through the standard studio system.

As a filmmaker, Smith is no longer relevant. Apparently he himself knows this; why else would he be engaging in such trite shenanigans?

How about shutting up and making a good movie?

  • @Pgirts When was the last time Kevin Smith could've been legitimately called a "critical darling?" Shitting on Kevin Smith has been the favorite hobby of movie critics everywhere for about the last 15 years!

I say good on him for doing what he wants, how he wants.

  • @MechaStreisand1 "Clerks", "Chasing Amy", and "Dogma" were all received quite well. Even "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" was received fairly well. The man has appeared as a guest critic for Ebert and Roeper.

Critics like him and like his earlier films. His more recent ones have been either panned or received mixed reviews.

I'm just stating how I feel on the matter. I'm not insulting people who support him, I'm just expressing my view on the situation.

  • @Pgirts You're dead on. It's like every film he makes comes with a built-in publicity stunt.

With "Zack and Miri" it was the manufactured controversy over the NC-17 Rating and the title. With "Cop Out", it was the dumb-ass Southwest Air "controversy."

And now with "Red State", it's this. I really question his motives.

  • He makes some damn good points, but this whole 'auction' nonsense was a dog-and-pony show that I think is pretty tacky.

  • i like his askewniverse movies better

  • I like this idea, hopefully this works out for them.

  • I like this idea, hopefully this works out for them.

  • I Haven't liked a lot of his movies or any of his comics, but the man ha the biggest set of balls in the buissness.

Even if this fails miserably, I would respect him more than any other director alive.

  • This guy is basically trying to open the doors to new filmmakers, and at the same time declare war to the studios, what a badass.

  • 6 people were planning to bid on Red State.

  • The man is amazing.

  • I'll be downloading it...Probably wouldn't spend money on it though

  • BRAVO kevin Smith!

  • This is not about Kevin Smiths merits as a filmmaker, this is about revolutionizing the way movies are distributed. Anyone who cares about movies or ever wanted to tell a story should jump on board with this because the movies are dying under the greed of the studio system and opening weekends. Everyone of you whose ever had something to say, a story to tell, he's talking about turning the system upside down and taking it out of the hands of studio execs who only want your money and whose only

  • @CodeNameMrDangerous

pretty much the 80's all over again, falling back in the hands of the director..I really hope it's like that again

  • Cant wait to see what happens with this release set up. Psyched!

  • This guy is a terrible movie maker. I can't think of one good movie he's made. Why do so many tards listen to him?

  • @St4rdog Because not everyone shares your poor taste.

  • "Mr. Rearden," said Francisco, his voice solemnly calm, "if you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier he world bore down on his shoulders - what would you tell him to do?"

"I... don't know. What... could he do? What would you tell him?"

    "To shrug."

  • Hey why are people trashing him?? There are a lot of studios out there making a load of cash from us the viewer/fan/artists and for not really doing anything but buying projects.

How many great ideas have been ruined by studios trying to get the largest demographic?

Kevin is keeping everything in the control of the artist , How is this a bad thing?

I will support Mr Smith anyway I can, I love art.

I just hope he gets the support he needs to beat an old and tired business model.

  • @TheWailsound

...But It is the same business model...

He's relying on an existing fanbase (i.e. a demographic) to balance his film like every distributor/production company has been doing since the beginning of Talkies. There's very little (read: nothing significant) in his speech that actually address how, or if, he's going to help out Joe-Schmo with a film they want to distribute/produce.

Another aphorism for you: It's status-quo dressed up as "indie cred".

  • @TheWailsound The movie hasn't had a theatrical release and he's made ~$4million so far. The movie has cost ~$5million to his investors. He's going to make a LOT of money.

  • The quote he restates I think is pretty similar to Ralph Waldo Emersons quote, "Don't go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path to leave a trail."

  • this is a trend that i gladly welcome. the same thing is happening with music, beer and other creative outlets that have been taken over by suits and giant multibillion dollar conglomerates to make an easy buck on things people are already familiar with. the control is staying where it should with the CREATORS of the art and i think the idea is genius and will thrive the way conan's roadshow did last year. best of luck kevin smith. i will gladly attend a screening if one comes to my town!

  • This is rad. DIY.

  • Really thought provoking stuff. Especially given with how bloated the internet is with self-distributed content through YouTube, Vimeo and the like. This does seem like the next logical decision with the state of things. Personally I like the idea of bringing a film to a large venue and making it an event. It reminds me of the days with the huge movie palaces. Yeah, it might fail, but you can't fault the guy for stepping outside the box and trying something different.

  • So why are all the commenters listening to a really long speech about film marketing and distribution and then NOT commenting on the actual speech. I found it fascinating. I really liked the bit about miramax.Guys we get it you don't like Kevin Smith. I'm not a fan of his movies, but I still actually listened to the speech. You listen to a half hour speech and all you can say is "he didn't sell out the Sidney opera house twice"

  • you gotta suck the hollywoodcock and cradle the studio balls but damb its not as though he makes it easy to understand and i personally love his films like the guy dont like his way of describing things cause what he essentially did is become big time and goes on about smoking pot and being regular so people dont see that he made it then realised hed make more money as a indipendant distributer but he still makes good films and hell he might be on the right track to an new age of GOOD cinema.

  • i understand that people see kevin as a bit of a douche i understand that he seems like some white hero with a two faced view on the industry i mean he went from being the writer of green hornet a very mainstream film to red state and also he talks bout how the industry is causing him this huge upset on backpay for people when zack and miri made a fucking bomb i bought the dvd i know tons of people that ought it it was a big fucking film . But what he is doing is more here pointing out that

  • How does he "OWE" his career to critics? Critics for the most part have never really backed him. Kevin show his gratitude to the real people who have made his career His" FANS" He is one of the most relatable and down to earth "celebrities" out there. I have met the guy in person once, and he was a fuc**ing delightful. I mean that literally he was friendly and happy to have us as fan acknowledge him. So he pissed on some industry insider boo woo. I hope this works out so well for him!

  • Comment removed

  • @deviledegg As Kevin Smith himself has written.. Bob Hawk recommended Clerks to critic Amy Taubin, which brought it to the attention of Miramax head of acquisitions. Neither his career or fanbase would exist without the very critic system (and now distribution model) he has been rallying against ever since Cop Out was a critical and commercial flop.

But keep drinking the Kool-aid. Surely you don't think that he could have toured and self-financed both a theatrical and VHS run of Chasing Amy?

  • @frumpsnake I don't know about Amy Taubin being involved with him getting distributed but yes she did give him a favorable review..The man who got Harvey Wienstien (sp?) to actually go see the movie was Jon Gordon. Back at the Sundance festival in 94. Now Mark Tusk had urged Harvey to go see the movie but Jon GOrdon is the man who MADE Harvey go see

No kool-aid here I just know what I like and respect the man for trying to venture out and do his own thing. For HIS fans.

  • It is impossible for me to feel more contempt for Kevin Smith than I do right now. Ugh, just the sight of him up there rambling, waving around a hockey stick like a child.

  • This was amazing!

    Thanks Bobby!

  • He never sold out the second night at The Opera House Sydney. I was there both nights.

  • @chrisfishlock A "Red State Tour" might very well work for Kevin Smith, because he's spent 20 years in the traditional system he just spent 30 minutes shitting all over. He can sell out Radio City Music Hall at 60 bucks a pop, but why would that work for someone no ones heard of? It's like Radiohead's In Rainbows release. A lot of hype, but it only works because they're already famous. There are plenty of REAL independents capable of helping struggling filmmakers.

  • Comment removed

  • @grug3 how is he denying struggling filmmakers when he has just created a new distrubtion company for struggling filmmakers. listen to what he says before slagging him off.

  • @chrisfishlock And finally, his behaviour -- first trashing critics last year (who he owes his career to), now the film distributors. It's the mere continuation of his breakdown about how his recent films are failures critically and commercially. Why did he need to attend Sundance, denying film buyers the ability to see other, lesser known film makers who might have needed that very screen, to sell tickets directly to his twitter followers who wouldn't exist without the system he bitched about?

  • @grug3 you mean the weinstein he just hugely praised?

  • Gotta love the way Kevin Smith talks in front of audiences

  • Hope it works, but I honestly don't think it will. Not for a couple years anyhow.

  • @Gemanite55 It'll make a decent amount of money out of his fans, but then again he clearly has no confidence in its ability to pull a big audience, so this way he gets to save face and be all "but I make movies for the fans, man, that's why I did this" when in fact he just dodged a Jersey-Girl-sized bullet. And not like Matrix dodging either, more like just not showing up to the gunfight. I like the dude and all, but this is just pussy-ass bullshit.
