I watched this live back in January 1989. I was only eight years old in the third grade at the time, but I remember it like yesterday. I got the special Rose Parade 3D glasses for free at "Luckys" which was one of the now long closed down grocery stores in our town. The 3D glasses never worked lol. I was like "what the heck with these stupid things" lol. However the parade itself was totally great. I recorded it back then, but lost the tape a few years later. Talk about memories!
Actually you're right about the 3D glaases you mentioned. In order for it to work, the TV had to be in Top shape and adjusted almost exactly the way the studio was transmitting it. But, I discovered that if you take any pair of true 100 percent polarized glasses whether presciption or not, take out or replace the polarized lens to match the same side as the "Lucky's" or "Von's" pair, left side, I popped out my clip-ons, play back this video in HQ if you have the bandwidth, and it works here.
Also, not all camera's had this polarized light range or were not set up correctly. If you look after the opening remarks to the pretaped logos and then the danced numbers with the glasses as mentioned in the previous comment, you will see the difference if you have good corrected vision and depth perception. This effect can be seen if you try the same glasses on the Live Olympics coverage and many Live Game coverage.
