The "X" was a political X. I have seen this film several times and there is nothing in it that would remotely approach an "X" rating by today's standards.
@squeapler Rated "X" meant rated "X"; however, for this film, it was re-rated an "R" after an appeal. There was a scene in the movie where a nude and full frontal Robert Forster is chasing around his girlfriend/lover (also frontal nude) at his house. The MPAA might've been put off by that. It's might've been rated "R" by today's standards if perhaps the scene would've been truncated or deleted. However, an NC-17 wouldn't have been ruled out.
@poughkeepsiejohn1 They weren't; the rating was appealed and it was re-rated "R." However, they might've been put off by the nude scene between Robert Forster's character and his lover/girlfriend.
A small segment of Medium Cool was filmed in Franklin Park Illinois at the corner of Grand and 25th, NW corner at the popular ice cream dip cone walk up. The ice cream shop is gone and now serves as a car storage lot.

An X rating meant you had to be 17? Badass.

@sevinPackage Yes, it meant no children under 17 admitted; period. The "X" rating was changed to its present "NC-17" in 1990.

This is the clearest, best version of this trailer that I've found anywhere. NICE. Thank you for supplying it!
Medium Cool taught Tarrantino everything he knows. One of my favorite films of all time.
