this was amazing. I am a scientist and this is incredibly put. he is obviously well read. I have written many scientific papaers and know how long it takes to gather infomation together. How he did this is wonderful. Just Brilliant!
I am so depressed to see so many negative votes on this. I thought that people gave the meditation/Buddhist talks thumbs up because they understood the underlying concepts...but it appears that they are only following the fad. This man is saying the same thing you idiots!
Excellent speech. I'm a Buddhist, but what he's saying is true. Science deals with how the body works (which includes the brain). I still see nothing that even tries to deal with the consciousness. Apply scientific methodology to the study of religion (practises that increase the ability to generate holistic thoughts and the tools to investigate these thoughts basically). No new invention gives us more than a temporary pleasure...and we are not happier than we were 1000 years ago
@RokEmSukIt ... When I say blueprint what I mean is the original design of God being monogamy and not homosexuality, lesbianism, adultery, and fornication thing that many people do around the world. And by the way, evolution is not science but a theory.
@ByJustified "When I say blueprint what I mean is the original design of God being monogamy"
Explain why god sometimes gives men multiple simultaneous wives if he wants us to adhere to monogamy.
"And by the way, evolution is not science but a theory."
Evolution is a scientific theory, and a fact. It is a fact that species evolve - we can observe it. The body of knowledge surrounding that fact, including common ancestry is a theory which has been proven.
@BailiffQuimby What did you said? You stated "why god sometimes gives men multiple simultaneous wives?" Please show me in the Bible that God really "gave" them their multiple simultaneous wives. Be specific. If you can't even give me a specific passage then that simply means you are reading into the Bible and you don't know the Bible. Start reading with an open heart. And by the way, "scientific theory" is still a theory. Nothing true about that. Evolution is "an uncertain belief."
@ByJustified "Please show me in the Bible that God really "gave" them their multiple simultaneous wives."
2 Samuel 12:8 "And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom..."
"scientific theory" is still a theory. Nothing true about that"
"Scientific theory" is the highest level a hypothesis can achieve in science. Evolution is a theory in the same way that *gravity* is a theory. Or do you think that gravity is also "an uncertain belief" and "nothing true about that"?
@BailiffQuimby At least gravity can be proven true today that if any person jumps out of the building they will admit it's not a theory already. But evolution? I suggest you go to the nearest zoo and check the monkeys and gorilla if they already became humans. (Pardon my sarcasm) Let's see if evolution is a scientific fact.
@ByJustified "At least gravity can be proven true today"
Nope. What if I theorized that it's not gravity, but invisible magical leprechauns pulling everything and everyone down? Or invisible elastic strings? C'mon, PROVE gravity. All we have is a ton of observable evidence supporting it. (just like evolution)
"I suggest you go to the nearest zoo and check the monkeys and gorilla if they already became humans."
This suggestion proves that you have no understanding of how evolution works.
@ByJustified "Let's see if evolution is a scientific fact. "
Sure. Let's see. Geological strata confirms it. Geographical distribution confirms it. Comparative physiology confirms it. Comparative genetics confirms it. The extensive collection of transitional fossils confirms it. The fact that most modern medicine is based on the theory and it works confirms it. The fact that we have SEEN speciation both in the laboratory and in the wild confirms is. There - it's a scientific fact.
@BailiffQuimby Let's take this one by one. Can you provide me an evidence that the upper surface of each layer that formed the uppermost strata was exposed for great ages? Now, provide me with evidence and not just your subjective hunch. This will surely be interesting.
@ByJustified "Can you provide me an evidence that the upper surface of each layer that formed the uppermost strata was exposed for great ages?"
Yes. Through a combination of dating with about one-dozen methods with synchronous results, we can work out the age of the sediments to approximately 2-5% error.
@malabuyuk "but it does not explain how or why it all came to be."
Yes it does. Through observable evidence and testable models, science also investigates causes of current phenomena. The origin of the universe is obviously a little trickier of a question. But there are current and developing theories based on evidence about what went on at around t=0 and how the big bang occurred.
@MyContext... Well, if Christians sometimes fail in their testimony as followers of Christ it's either they are just Christians by name or had some personal struggles. If they really are genuine Christians then I am sure changes will happen in their personal lives. If they have previous homosexual or lesbian backgrounds then for sure with Christ help they will overcome those sins and glorify Jesus as godly men and women. We have to always go back to our original blueprint and not redesign it.
I would ask permission to place a legend in this video, for people who speak in other tongues as the Brazilians, to read in its original language. Graahm Billy is one of the greatest preachers of today. I already have the video to fully subtitled to Portuguese that I can send if you wish! God bless you. Cesar Daniel
Preaching or selling ANYTHING does not belong in TED. I don't care if it's Jesus or a smartphone. Yes I'm sure he's well-intentioned, but so are most people.
He offers nothing new or scientific - basically reviews the history of technology then starts preaching.
@bztheman In my humble opinion, every job is sales and every TED talk I can remember was "selling" an idea. True, Billy Graham sells something different, a worldview rather than a scientific idea or technological vision, but again in my humble opinion, it is a difference in degree not in nature to what most people who give TED talks present. Hope this is constructive, Best Regards M
@captainmarkusposinus You're right - I concur that TED talks sell ideas so I take back "ANYTHING". He is sharing a world view - similar to another talk which discussed "empathy". The only difference is that the approach to the "empathy" talk was new, modern, and interesting, whereas this reverend is preaching what we already know about Christianity. It is an old, common, and frequently advertised point of view...which is not what I personally expect from TED. Perhaps that's my problem!
@bztheman Dear Bztheman thanks for your constructive reply. I agree with most points of your discourse. However, striking another note, I wonder what TED were thinking Billy G. was going to give a talk about..nanotechnology or climate change or advances in lockpicking? I don't think so. Perhaps that TED wanted to have B.G. give this talk because it was something new FOR TED. His point that the key issue is the human heart and not improved technology is different from most talks on TED. Best Reg
@captainmarkusposinus I agree with you on that too - TED must have known what the reverend would talk about. It makes sense if, as you say, they were experimenting with a new and different topic for TED. I suppose another way to look at it is that we're not paying to watch these talks and we have the freedom to watch whatever interests us. Lesson learned. Take care Cap'n!
Is it because it is uninteresting or because is so profound and intimate that reveals much and make many uncomfortable with any sort of accountability to the creator, the Lord Himself?
@bztheman Our new views and approaches regarding ships, for an instances, does not demand the abandon of the initial magnificent idea of vessels floating on water in the first places but rather develops and adapts these old concepts to our needs today. You are jot wrong except, i believe, on the point of what is old is old and new is new. We continue to nourish ourselves greatly in all that originated in the book of beginnings. Besides the question of the reverend still up to and unchallenged.
Praise God for people like Dr. Billy Graham. As a result of his response to God's call many peoples lives were transformed due to the salvation and love of Jesus Christ. Atheism has not done anything at all but wreck the lives of families and individuals. There will be a time of reckoning in the end and these atheist and agnostics will give an account to God Himself.
@ByJustified Billy Graham is a racist homophobe who spent most of his life spreading intolerance, elitism and hate. Atheism doesn't wreck families - intolerance brought about by religion wrecks families. Give me one example where it is otherwise. As for your threat at the end of your comment, Pascal's Wager is filled with more logical fallacies than Monty Python and the Holy Grail's syllogism for determining whether someone is a witch.
@BailiffQuimby Hmmm... It seems like you're filled with anger inside. I hope you will try to study the lives of some known atheists. In fact, according to a book research done by one psychologist, many atheist people have "'abusive and weak fathers." He includes, Thomas Hobbs, Meilier, Voltaire, d'Alembert, d'Holbach, Feuerbach, Samuel Butler, Freud, H. G. Wells, Carlile, Madalyn Murray O'Hair and Albert Ellis. These were all shown to have negative father/child relationships during their youth.
@ByJustified So there are no statistics to suggest any differences between theists and atheists and their relations with their fathers. Just a few specific anecdotal items. Good to know, thank you.
Moreover, whether or not people have bad relationships with their fathers says absolutely nothing about whether they are right or wrong.
Lastly, telling your kid that they are born deserving of eternal torture is child abuse. Atheists never do this. Do you?
@ByJustified " Is that how your dad told you when you were still small? That's sad."
Is WHAT what my dad told me? I haven't shared anything my dad ever said to me with you. I just said he was a good dad and we had a good relationship. If you are going to address something I said, please reference it so I know what you're responding to.
@BailiffQuimby - I am gay and Billy G is one christian who I respect because he is one of the few open-minded tolerant christians out there. Intolerance, elitism, and hate are not words I would ever associate with Billy Graham. Calling him these things makes you appear like a bigot towards anyone of the christian faith.
@lucasboden Not bigoted, just undereducated. I just did some research after reading your reply and realized that I was thinking of Graham's son who recently spoke at our local university and brought the protesters out of the woodwork because of all the anti-gay, etc, statements he has made. But yeah, that's Franklin Graham, not Billy. I apologize. (And if Billy read my previous post, I apologize to him too.)
@lucasboden To amend my previous comment, it appears Billy did say some pretty awful things about Jews on the nixon tapes. But I'm willing to acknowledge that a dude can change a lot in 39 years. So no hard feelings. :-)
@BailiffQuimby - I am not familar with the conversations between he and Nixon; however, even if he did say racist things in that conversation, that wasn't his public stance or message that he spread. If he consistenly preached a message of hate in his revival meetings which I am unfamiliatr with then yes I would change my opinion about him. (note: The State Of Israel does not equal the Jewish People just as the Republican Party does not equal Americans)
@lucasboden "however, even if he did say racist things in that conversation, that wasn't his public stance"
No, it was how he really felt and acted when he thought the public wasn't watching. And his comments weren't about the State of Israel, they were about the poor state of the country since the Jews run the media and he referred to the "Synagogue of Satan". But as I said, a guy can change in 39 years.
I've seen the negative votes. God is right. Mankind is mean, cruel, heartless, unloving, ungrateful, slanderous & utterly corrupt.
I LOVE YOU BILLY GRAHAM. And anyone who reads his book, "Just As I AM" will be AMAZED at what he has seen around the world & how he's radically improved so many cultures, countries & lives. EVERY world dignitary welcomed & respected him.
I would say shame on those who voted him down, but hek...THAT'S WHAT THE FIRES OF HELL ARE FOR.
so frustrating that the video and voice keep stopping every few seconds. This man is one of the more open-minded and intelligent "religious" people I've ever heard speak. He has always been tolerant of others and their points of view and treated people with respect, yet will support and defend his faith to anyone.
As an atheist, someone who can't religion, I don't find anything to get upset about in this talk. I would rather have Billy Graham, than his son Franklin. What a nut. His father goes to this talk, which is largely science based, and praises technology. I like it.
Praise God for Dr. Billy Graham. No atheist have gone into all the world and help alleviate the condition of man from discouragement to hope. No atheist have offered families how to reconcile together. No atheist have taught how a husband can be loyal to his wife. No atheist has reconciled colored and white people as in racial discrimination Mississippi. Praise God for the message of Good News preach by Rev. Billy Graham. Atheist people has not offered anything.
Fortunately the cameras that filmed this TED talk as well as Bill Grahams sermons through a bulk of his preaching career, the satellites that bounced his signal across the entire planet, the computer chips that allowed "The divine miss white" and everyone else to be able to access the internet to make comments on this video...
“In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” 2 Timothy 3:12 NIV. Do not be troubled, know that God faced it all. There shall be a time when loneliness, tears, and pain dies. Keep faith, my brothers and sisters in Christ.
This phony ignores the fact that, while science does not yet answer every question, it is seeking the answers and is able to adjust it's thinking to accommodate new evidence. Religion, simply does not allow questions but demands unthinking belief in spite of contrary evidence.
Most of the problems of the world are, and always have been, caused by religion. Mankind will never truly be free until the black yoke of religion is lifted by the clear light of truth and rational thinking.
@loveunderlaw Ohhh, another intelligent comment by the internet coward. You can't even think of an original insult. Try this, you have the intellectual agility of a doorknob. You are a weak-minded, cowardly little man. You wouldn't face me personally even if I paid your way here. What a cheap little mental midget you are. As a human being, you are more disgusting that a bowl full of maggots covered with pus. Oops, sorry, that was your breakfast wasn't it?
@loveunderlaw I am sure your family must be proud of your posts. If you are, why don't you pass them on to your mother. Or has your entire family already disowned you out of shame?
You seem obsessed with homosexual insults. Perhaps you are projecting your own desires? Nothing wrong with being gay, but using it as insults reveals more about your lack of character than I think you would like most people to know.
@loveunderlaw I love the way you evade all the questions, requests for proof of anything and how you ignore my offer of a free trip.
What is it with the picture? Do you think such a foolish attempt at distraction will work? Not everyone is as stupid as you are. Accept my offer. I will love to see how you squirm out of that. You are a gutless coward. Stop hidiing and be a man, just this once.
@loveunderlaw I know you're not going to accept my offer. I recognize a coward when I see one. A photo would prove nothing but you think everyone is too stupid to know that. How would you know if it was even my picture? Most people of normal intelligence could catch on to that right away. But not you. You love proving how stupid you are. You explain it incorrectly to me because you haven't figured it out yourself. COme and get your ass whipping, yellow belly.
@loveunderlaw GUes what? I out up a picture of me. I'm the one in the air. That was when I was just starting out, so I've learned a bit now. I'm not leaving that pic up forever so better look fast.
My parents are dead, you fucking asshole. You have a patent on pathetic, you putrid coward. Accept my offer if you're not afraid.
@loveunderlaw YOu have it wrong, asshole. You're the one that's terrified to pay my way as I have offered to do for you. If you do either, you might have to actually face me. Then you'd be videoed pissing yourself as you got your ass kicked. I have never in my life been afraid of a puking piece of shit like you. Let's get it on. Come on down. Pay my way there. Either way, you'll never be the same again.
@loveunderlaw If you're so brave and tough, why don't you match my offer? I'd love to wander Times Square for a while asking people if they have seen a goth-boy bum pissing his pants. You think I am talking shit? Then accept my offer or match it. Then we'll see who is the shitbird. Scratch up some corn and match my offer, chickenshit.
@loveunderlaw Come and get it, shitbird. I will enjoy feeling your bones break. Your screams will be music to me. But we both know you will never take the least chance of even being on the same continent with me. Doesn't looking like a cowardly idiot bother you? Go fuck yourself. It'll be the only sex you ever have.
@PhuqueUTube3 Come and get it, shitbird. I will enjoy feeling your bones break. Your screams will be music to me. But we both know you will never take the least chance of even being on the same continent with me. Doesn't looking like a cowardly idiot bother you? Go fuck yourself. It'll be the only sex you ever have.
It is typical of most cynics to feel the need to oppose anyone or anything that promotes hope for mankind as they themselves have lost hope in the ideals they have held to or carried. They don't see the value in the simple things in life and always think the answer lies in some far reaching scientific formula or theory that will culminate into the epitome of human purpose.Their evolutionary logic which requires one to believe that innumerable variables ALL coincided into life demands great FAITH.
Totally pointless. Religion, beliefes or other crap, can't go along with science.
Science gives an answer after getting some inputs.
Religion gives an answer out of absolutely nothing.
Jesus was a man, like everyone. How can you idolize a man for what he says? lol
Its just totally and epicly ridicolous.
Socrate has born before Jesus and said WAY more tough words, but no one gives a fuck about it just cause he wasn't that high to say "Hey i'm the son of god!".
Billy Graham is of this world, he is beloved and respected by many, but Jesus said to his disciples regarding worldly admiration and respect, If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John 15:19. Those who belong to Jesus Christ are hated by this world. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:26
The quotable false Prophet Bill Graham, Larry King asks, How do you feel when you see a lot of these strong Christian leaders go on television and say, you are condemned, you will live in hell if you do not accept Jesus Christ, and they are forceful and judgmental? Graham: Well, they have a right to say that, and they are true to a certain extent, but I don't, that's not my calling. Billy Graham denies the biblical teaching of hell and eternal torment for those who choose not to accept Christ.
@Rylucero 80 years old here. Remarkable. He seems like a very pleasant man. He does not deny the biblical teaching of hell. The quote you gave doesn't prove that at all. He says its not his calling to confront people in that way...
@hotpinkbeliever True prophets of God will seek God’s will without compromise, they will have no desire to conform to the expectations of people, nor will they seek worldly admiration or respect, but will be hated by this world. They will speak of wickedness and deceit and warn those who are perishing of this evil. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own, but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John 15:19.
@Rylucero I have never heard anyone or him say that he is a prophet. He is an evangelist. Everything you say is true. But why are you saying that about him? What are you basing your opinion on?
@hotpi A true prophet of God is one who is given the gift to preach repentance to humanity and to warn of God's wrath for disobedience. The message once received is a revelation and the delivery of the message is prophecy. A true prophet testifies of Jesus Christ as the Son of God that He died for our sins they preach of condemnation, judgment, sin, and of eternal torment that awaits the unbeliever. True Prophets of God preach of repentance, warn of God’s wrath and at times deliver revelation.
@hotpinkbeliev True Prophets of God unlike Billy Graham who have been called by God to speak for Him and to be His messenger are commanded by God to reveal to mankind His plan of salvation, His will, His character, and His truth. True Prophets speak of the consequences of denying the Savior that leads to eternal separation in Hell. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:30 (KJV)
The false Prophet Billy Graham writes: "We should accept abortion in these cases: rape or incest or if the delivery of the child is a threat to a mother's life. Billy Graham speaking, "Many people are deceived by Satan into thinking that God is a vengeful taskmaster, ready to send to hell all those who offend Him.” The God whom I serve however says, "You shall not murder" Exodus 20:13 and that, God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. Psalm 7:11
The quotable Billy Graham with Larry King, King: Do you feel the same about other faiths? Graham: Absolutely King: Buddhism? Graham: I love them all, and welcome them all, and love to be with them, and friends with all of them. Billy Graham has no desire to righteously judge them because he is not a true man of God, Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:4
Everybody keeps saying religion religion religion! Billy Graham does not teach RELIGION he speaks about it. He is a christian meaning Following Christ. Christianity is NOT a religion.
It's true that science and technology don't solve all problems. But religion doesn't solve ANY problems. It's one thing to say science doesn't have all the answers, but it's total nonsense to suggest that we should look to religion to fill in those gaps. That's a non sequitur.
Most TED Talks consist of open-mindedness and controversial yet noteworthy ideas. This particular Talk is no exception, though may be the only one not fueled by liberal, atheist, or anti-Christian thoughts. If you are so frightened or offended by this rarity, explore the other hundreds of videos. When offered a point of view that does not correlate exactly with your own, don't shame yourself by objecting to it so foolishly. Be sensible. Bring up a valid protest or keep your comments to yourself.
I find it sad that nobody thinks there is something to learn here. You can always learn something from everyone. Not something good, or something bad. Just something.
God said that one day every knee shall bow and the people of this earth will be parted right and left, either heaven or hell, and yes this means you, and it wont be one of those "i told you so" moments, you will know that He is God, and if you can, even if you dont believe, then you wont be afraid to say these words.."if there is a God i ask that You shake me so that i know that You are God so that i might be saved" mean it, and i promise you will be shaken..
God did not say that, God does not "speak" with a voice, now, Jesus is not known to have said anything, perhaps he did not exist.....The bible says that JEsus said that....from there to God saying anything...that is such a stretch!!!
Well spoken. Man is born evil and corrupt. Every increase in knowledge and technology comes with an increase in man's ability to destroy himself and others. There is no hope for a Utopia on Earth. The only hope for man is to fear God and submit to his will. Even then, the corruption will only be bandaged.
No, fear in a "god" does not better human nature and distort scewed morals. People becoming conscious of their faults, taking responsibility for them and consciously try to overcome what they see as the bad side of their human nature will do more than any religion filled with sheep followers that simply believe but do not understand will ever do.
matthew....what a "wonderful pre-destined" name for a christian. I bet you are an american white republican evangelist that read only 1 book in his entire life: The Holy Crap Bible. Go back to the bronze age you ignorant "incestual offspring" of Adam and Eve's children. I piss on your Creator. He, the almighty ASSHOLE of the universe can kiss my ass. To bad he exists only in your imagination. You are so brainwashed with your sily faith that you are lost beyond reason...it's really sad.
And then the incarnation of "God" commits suicide in the most barbaric way to save some shitty bacteria called humans, that don't need to be saved. These bacteria behave according to the laws of nature put there by God in the first place. Acctualy, this whole story is a metaphore for God saying: "Guys, i totally fucked up when I created the Universe". I flagelate myself for that. Can you guys forgive me? And then God gets pissed off if some bacteria don't buy the story and builds hell for it.
The Bible was written by mentally ill men, not "normal". The old bible prophets suffered from epilepsia and other diseases (most probably due to their incestual sexual relationships - in which the Bible abunds of, or maybe due to goat sex). The new testament comes with a breakthrough in the matter of sex. A divine sperm cell arrives on a beam of light dirrectly in the vagina of a virgin. Then the outcome of this transgalactic experiment starts breaking all physical laws available.
They made it up!! Like Disney wrote The Lion King. This dude has lived his life believe a farce. HA HA HA A HA HA. Noahs arc? HAHAHAHA. Adam and Eve? HAHAHAHAHA
This is not terrible. Open your mind. Would you rather someone talking about Buddhism?...oh, they have. Would you like someone to talk about atheism?...oh, they have. Do you get my point?
@matthewcharder Well depending on what subsect of buddhism it would have been empowering since your not being asked to accept a jewish zombie into your heart. Atheism you can really go wrong there! LOL! ;)
how could they let an anti-semetic mean spirited man talk at TED?....lately teds guests are just getting lower and lower on the respect scale. shame. Still got some good though
We can all have different view of this presentation from Dr B.Graham, We all we have to know this, one day we will all stand before God and give a report of our life and at The end He will ask this ques" What did you do with my son, the one who died for you, did you receive Him as you Lord and Savior of your live ? This will be a question that every one have to answer. Hebrews 3; 15 As has just been said:
God love you, he send his son to die for you, you may say not, it will be like saying the sun move around the earth, the truth will never change even if every body don't believe.
Listen one day we will have an end and we will stand before the God and He will again ask the same question what did you do with my beloved son who died for you sin?, each of us will answer this question.
One thing funknotik spend your time to convince christians about what the believe, it will like tell ling a astraunote that the sun is small that the earth and move around the earth. God love you and your soul is so precious for Him that why he send jesus to died for you, you need to receive him one day in you life as your lord and savior before you drink your last droplet of your life
@akazadi2007 Funny that you mention that since the geocentric world view was actually a Catholic concept until copernicus turned us heliocentric. So yeah science came along and disproved that the earth was the center of the galaxy. Thanks for pointing that out, here we are re inventing the wheel.
@akazadi2007 Why would a cosmic being have to ask a question? Can't he just zap it out of my head, kinda goofy don't you think? I mean he has to be at least more powerful than galactus.
i must say something. science believes 1 thing that favors their thoughts. religions believes in things that favor their thoughts. hackers believes in things that favor their thoughts. who is right, who is wrong, whats going to go wrong? who is at fault. the answer is YOU(the ones that can see negative in anything). the value of faith/hope, promise, trust seem to lost its strenghs. we are allowed to reject eachothers way of doing things. but we are teammembers. we come together...
It's easy to forget how amazing a speaker Billy Graham is. Although I'm a atheist, I can respect a man who spoke to a million people in South Korea & who took Christianity to places where it was persecuted & banned (e.g. China, the USSR & North Korea).
Saying that, the answer to 'Why?' does not necessarily = God, but it's an interesting talk nonetheless...
Its amazing the comments on this video. So many who think technology is our savior scoff at a reasoning voice, an old man who reminds them that moral evil, suffering and death still stand laughing at them.
He's a great guy. However I feel this text only spoke to a very small religious portion of the TED crowd. You have to cater your speeches to people your listeners, and this speech is a bit too removed from what average non-religious people think. I mean, a few non-Christians must be all, "who the hell is King David?????" Gotta explain such things.
i was reading the comments...and his name is DR Billy Graham. He's a doctor so his not stupid. How many of you have Doctoral Degrees? BTW why must you all ridicule christian scientists like they are the dumb crowd?
Its okay for people to disagree. But have some respect for the guy. He's done a lot more to benefit mankind than 99.9% of all you who judge him.
When you've spent your entire life trying to embetter the human race, THEN write your snide comments.
Last thing. Unlike a lot of whacks, he's not here to bring down science or technology. He's just framing the problems science doesn't solve. I think its a fair statement, whether I agree or not.
@merlynDHZ but he does disingenuously imply that religion CAN solve the problems..when infact religion has demonstrated to do quite the opposite. Further, he has also done more to harm mankind than 99.9% of the people judging him here.
@boorens18 You really think a man that fought to end segregation, world hunger, and war is the worst person out of a selection of 1000. If you don't agree with him fine but trying to condescend another person's beliefs, a dead man at that, is what leads to what is often misattributed as the "crimes of religion"
@merlynDHZ "embetter the human race.." haha demonstrates you know nothing of Billy Graham. The guy openly threw anti-semtic remarks around heads of state. (especially harmful seeing as he was considered an advisor) He spent his life encouraging ignorance (faith)...thats his legacy...and then he disingenuously implies faith can answer the problems he lists. How about when I do more harm then that I stop criticizing him?
Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I don't agree with everything religious people say. But also don't think science has ALL the answers. That's all.
@merlynDHZ Respect? For a phony scam artist that has enriched himself and his family by preying upon the gullibility of people that cannot think for themselves and reject facts and the reality of their own senses?
This man is a common criminal and should have been jailed decades ago for crimes against humanity and reason.
He is one of the most disgusting examples of the human race one can find.
Religion over the centuries has done so much more harm than good. Anyone that preaches religion and facilitates an anti-secular progressive society is at best retarding critical advances by poisoning minds. I am in my 20s but I highly doubt I'll live to see a secular utopia in which people think of themselves as human beings above all else. This sort of world is not possible when men claim to have the voice of an infallible authority & they preach hate while creating factions.

TED should stop inviting religious... people to their speeches. Rick Warren was another one of those superstitious loons with nothing of value to say...
Surprisingly while those people appear on TED they cut down on their bigotry. In contrast to when they are under "their folks". This particular man was a truly disgusting person if you research a bit into what he said and believed.
The speech Graham offers rational decision either to accept or reject the gift God offers free of charge to whomever will. That is simple even for a scientist...
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood and tare forty and two children of them.
1 Peter 1:3-9 3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you greatly rejoice...
Well... If you take away the hundreds of years of oppression, racism, bigotry, genocide, and hatred that helped to make and still is making religion what it is today; it would be an interesting sermon. I'd like to point out too; he still didn't propose an answer to any of the questions that he posed except (to paraphrase) "...believe in god, what have you got to loose?" BOY! Does he sound convincing or what? ',:-/
Right, lets completely disregard religion's contribution to social stability, moral code, education, love for the fellow man... Ever wondered who begun the idea of publication? Or the Bible being used as a reference for the United States Constitution along with English common law? Or how about the fact that nearly all hospitals are named after Catholic saints, because historically the Church sponsored hospitals?
Stop being a douchebag. Evil happens because of human beings, not religion.
Social stability=unity through faith, moral code=faith is morality, education=prayer in school, love for fellow man=love of destruction because more people have died in religion's name than ANY other cause. There is NO reference to the bible in the Constitution that I know of. (Not sure about English common law.) As far as the contribution to the hospitals how did they get that money? What did they sell?
As far as the douchebag thing: Im not trying to say that religion has never done anything good; Im just saying that the only things that religion has ever done have been self-serving and nothing more. Its a business, not the salvation of mankind.
Wow, this video is great and inspirational. Billy Graham is the Paul of Today. I'm happy to have witnessed such a video. God Bless his heart and soul :-)
Christian fairy tales no can no longer answer to humanity's problems.
Even if the fairy tales were true, they ask us to give up living, to give up happiness and to give up thinking. Is that what God (if he existed) wanted from us?
I call christians blasphemers of their own religion. They are those that show the world that Christianity is for the unhappy ones, that choose to remain unhappy.
This is why i think Christianity either has to change, or to die out.

ByJustified 3 months ago
@ByJustified "When I say blueprint what I mean is the original design of God being monogamy"
Explain why god sometimes gives men multiple simultaneous wives if he wants us to adhere to monogamy.
"And by the way, evolution is not science but a theory."
Evolution is a scientific theory, and a fact. It is a fact that species evolve - we can observe it. The body of knowledge surrounding that fact, including common ancestry is a theory which has been proven.
BailiffQuimby 3 months ago
@BailiffQuimby What did you said? You stated "why god sometimes gives men multiple simultaneous wives?" Please show me in the Bible that God really "gave" them their multiple simultaneous wives. Be specific. If you can't even give me a specific passage then that simply means you are reading into the Bible and you don't know the Bible. Start reading with an open heart. And by the way, "scientific theory" is still a theory. Nothing true about that. Evolution is "an uncertain belief."
ByJustified 3 months ago
@ByJustified "Please show me in the Bible that God really "gave" them their multiple simultaneous wives."
2 Samuel 12:8 "And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom..."
"scientific theory" is still a theory. Nothing true about that"
"Scientific theory" is the highest level a hypothesis can achieve in science. Evolution is a theory in the same way that *gravity* is a theory. Or do you think that gravity is also "an uncertain belief" and "nothing true about that"?
BailiffQuimby 3 months ago
@BailiffQuimby At least gravity can be proven true today that if any person jumps out of the building they will admit it's not a theory already. But evolution? I suggest you go to the nearest zoo and check the monkeys and gorilla if they already became humans. (Pardon my sarcasm) Let's see if evolution is a scientific fact.
ByJustified 2 months ago
@ByJustified "At least gravity can be proven true today"
Nope. What if I theorized that it's not gravity, but invisible magical leprechauns pulling everything and everyone down? Or invisible elastic strings? C'mon, PROVE gravity. All we have is a ton of observable evidence supporting it. (just like evolution)
"I suggest you go to the nearest zoo and check the monkeys and gorilla if they already became humans."
This suggestion proves that you have no understanding of how evolution works.
BailiffQuimby 2 months ago
@ByJustified "Let's see if evolution is a scientific fact. "
Sure. Let's see. Geological strata confirms it. Geographical distribution confirms it. Comparative physiology confirms it. Comparative genetics confirms it. The extensive collection of transitional fossils confirms it. The fact that most modern medicine is based on the theory and it works confirms it. The fact that we have SEEN speciation both in the laboratory and in the wild confirms is. There - it's a scientific fact.
BailiffQuimby 2 months ago
@BailiffQuimby Let's take this one by one. Can you provide me an evidence that the upper surface of each layer that formed the uppermost strata was exposed for great ages? Now, provide me with evidence and not just your subjective hunch. This will surely be interesting.
ByJustified 2 months ago
@ByJustified "Can you provide me an evidence that the upper surface of each layer that formed the uppermost strata was exposed for great ages?"
Yes. Through a combination of dating with about one-dozen methods with synchronous results, we can work out the age of the sediments to approximately 2-5% error.
BailiffQuimby 2 months ago
@BailiffQuimby Science explains what exists. Which is fascinating, but it does not explain how or why it all came to be.
malabuyuk 2 months ago
@malabuyuk "but it does not explain how or why it all came to be."
Yes it does. Through observable evidence and testable models, science also investigates causes of current phenomena. The origin of the universe is obviously a little trickier of a question. But there are current and developing theories based on evidence about what went on at around t=0 and how the big bang occurred.
BailiffQuimby 2 months ago
@MyContext... Well, if Christians sometimes fail in their testimony as followers of Christ it's either they are just Christians by name or had some personal struggles. If they really are genuine Christians then I am sure changes will happen in their personal lives. If they have previous homosexual or lesbian backgrounds then for sure with Christ help they will overcome those sins and glorify Jesus as godly men and women. We have to always go back to our original blueprint and not redesign it.
ByJustified 3 months ago
@ByJustified "for sure with Christ help they will overcome those sins"
Why would Jesus need to help them "overcome" the way that Jesus made them? Did Jesus mess up when he created gay people?
"We have to always go back to our original blueprint and not redesign it. "
The original blueprint was a failure too. That's why Adam and Eve were kicked out of Eden. Why would we aspire to be like the original sinners?

Preaching or selling ANYTHING does not belong in TED. I don't care if it's Jesus or a smartphone. Yes I'm sure he's well-intentioned, but so are most people.
He offers nothing new or scientific - basically reviews the history of technology then starts preaching.
bztheman 5 months ago
@bztheman In my humble opinion, every job is sales and every TED talk I can remember was "selling" an idea. True, Billy Graham sells something different, a worldview rather than a scientific idea or technological vision, but again in my humble opinion, it is a difference in degree not in nature to what most people who give TED talks present. Hope this is constructive, Best Regards M
captainmarkusposinus 4 months ago
@captainmarkusposinus You're right - I concur that TED talks sell ideas so I take back "ANYTHING". He is sharing a world view - similar to another talk which discussed "empathy". The only difference is that the approach to the "empathy" talk was new, modern, and interesting, whereas this reverend is preaching what we already know about Christianity. It is an old, common, and frequently advertised point of view...which is not what I personally expect from TED. Perhaps that's my problem!
bztheman 4 months ago 2
@bztheman Dear Bztheman thanks for your constructive reply. I agree with most points of your discourse. However, striking another note, I wonder what TED were thinking Billy G. was going to give a talk about..nanotechnology or climate change or advances in lockpicking? I don't think so. Perhaps that TED wanted to have B.G. give this talk because it was something new FOR TED. His point that the key issue is the human heart and not improved technology is different from most talks on TED. Best Reg
captainmarkusposinus 4 months ago
@captainmarkusposinus I agree with you on that too - TED must have known what the reverend would talk about. It makes sense if, as you say, they were experimenting with a new and different topic for TED. I suppose another way to look at it is that we're not paying to watch these talks and we have the freedom to watch whatever interests us. Lesson learned. Take care Cap'n!

Is it because it is uninteresting or because is so profound and intimate that reveals much and make many uncomfortable with any sort of accountability to the creator, the Lord Himself?
daniloorbolato 2 months ago

ByJustified 6 months ago 2
@ByJustified Billy Graham is a racist homophobe who spent most of his life spreading intolerance, elitism and hate. Atheism doesn't wreck families - intolerance brought about by religion wrecks families. Give me one example where it is otherwise. As for your threat at the end of your comment, Pascal's Wager is filled with more logical fallacies than Monty Python and the Holy Grail's syllogism for determining whether someone is a witch.
BailiffQuimby 6 months ago
@BailiffQuimby Hmmm... It seems like you're filled with anger inside. I hope you will try to study the lives of some known atheists. In fact, according to a book research done by one psychologist, many atheist people have "'abusive and weak fathers." He includes, Thomas Hobbs, Meilier, Voltaire, d'Alembert, d'Holbach, Feuerbach, Samuel Butler, Freud, H. G. Wells, Carlile, Madalyn Murray O'Hair and Albert Ellis. These were all shown to have negative father/child relationships during their youth.
ByJustified 6 months ago
@ByJustified "It seems like you're filled with anger"
Nope. I'm a happy guy. Just because I can objectively look at the many many faults of a hero of yours doesn't make me an angry person.
"I hope you will try to study the lives of some known atheists"
Don't have to. I can study my own.
"many atheist people have "'abusive and weak fathers"
Not me. And many theists have abusive weak fathers too, so I don't know why it would matter if that WERE true.
BailiffQuimby 6 months ago
@ByJustified So there are no statistics to suggest any differences between theists and atheists and their relations with their fathers. Just a few specific anecdotal items. Good to know, thank you.
Moreover, whether or not people have bad relationships with their fathers says absolutely nothing about whether they are right or wrong.
Lastly, telling your kid that they are born deserving of eternal torture is child abuse. Atheists never do this. Do you?

@lucasboden Not bigoted, just undereducated. I just did some research after reading your reply and realized that I was thinking of Graham's son who recently spoke at our local university and brought the protesters out of the woodwork because of all the anti-gay, etc, statements he has made. But yeah, that's Franklin Graham, not Billy. I apologize. (And if Billy read my previous post, I apologize to him too.)
BailiffQuimby 5 months ago
@lucasboden To amend my previous comment, it appears Billy did say some pretty awful things about Jews on the nixon tapes. But I'm willing to acknowledge that a dude can change a lot in 39 years. So no hard feelings. :-)
BailiffQuimby 5 months ago
@BailiffQuimby - I am not familar with the conversations between he and Nixon; however, even if he did say racist things in that conversation, that wasn't his public stance or message that he spread. If he consistenly preached a message of hate in his revival meetings which I am unfamiliatr with then yes I would change my opinion about him. (note: The State Of Israel does not equal the Jewish People just as the Republican Party does not equal Americans)
lucasboden 5 months ago
@lucasboden "however, even if he did say racist things in that conversation, that wasn't his public stance"
No, it was how he really felt and acted when he thought the public wasn't watching. And his comments weren't about the State of Israel, they were about the poor state of the country since the Jews run the media and he referred to the "Synagogue of Satan". But as I said, a guy can change in 39 years.

Most of the problems of the world are, and always have been, caused by religion. Mankind will never truly be free until the black yoke of religion is lifted by the clear light of truth and rational thinking.

What are you basing your opinion on?
hotpinkbeliever 1 year ago
@hotpi A true prophet of God is one who is given the gift to preach repentance to humanity and to warn of God's wrath for disobedience. The message once received is a revelation and the delivery of the message is prophecy. A true prophet testifies of Jesus Christ as the Son of God that He died for our sins they preach of condemnation, judgment, sin, and of eternal torment that awaits the unbeliever. True Prophets of God preach of repentance, warn of God’s wrath and at times deliver revelation.
Rylucero 1 year ago
@hotpinkbeliev True Prophets of God unlike Billy Graham who have been called by God to speak for Him and to be His messenger are commanded by God to reveal to mankind His plan of salvation, His will, His character, and His truth. True Prophets speak of the consequences of denying the Savior that leads to eternal separation in Hell. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:30 (KJV)

So listen with a mind wide open. Close it later.

asdacu,
God said that one day every knee shall bow and the people of this earth will be parted right and left, either heaven or hell, and yes this means you, and it wont be one of those "i told you so" moments, you will know that He is God, and if you can, even if you dont believe, then you wont be afraid to say these words.."if there is a God i ask that You shake me so that i know that You are God so that i might be saved" mean it, and i promise you will be shaken..
rowurboatmatt 1 year ago

Yes, that divine happening was. Just as the matter that you are made of came to be. Give respect to your creator.

Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.
akazadi2007 2 years ago
@akazadi2007 We have to give a report? Don't you think he could figure it out himself with his magical powers?
funknotik 2 years ago
God love you, he send his son to die for you, you may say not, it will be like saying the sun move around the earth, the truth will never change even if every body don't believe.
Listen one day we will have an end and we will stand before the God and He will again ask the same question what did you do with my beloved son who died for you sin?, each of us will answer this question.
akazadi2007 2 years ago
One thing funknotik spend your time to convince christians about what the believe, it will like tell ling a astraunote that the sun is small that the earth and move around the earth. God love you and your soul is so precious for Him that why he send jesus to died for you, you need to receive him one day in you life as your lord and savior before you drink your last droplet of your life
akazadi2007 2 years ago
@akazadi2007 Funny that you mention that since the geocentric world view was actually a Catholic concept until copernicus turned us heliocentric. So yeah science came along and disproved that the earth was the center of the galaxy. Thanks for pointing that out, here we are re inventing the wheel.
funknotik 2 years ago
@akazadi2007 Why would a cosmic being have to ask a question? Can't he just zap it out of my head, kinda goofy don't you think? I mean he has to be at least more powerful than galactus.
funknotik 2 years ago
i must say something. science believes 1 thing that favors their thoughts. religions believes in things that favor their thoughts. hackers believes in things that favor their thoughts. who is right, who is wrong, whats going to go wrong? who is at fault. the answer is YOU(the ones that can see negative in anything). the value of faith/hope, promise, trust seem to lost its strenghs. we are allowed to reject eachothers way of doing things. but we are teammembers. we come together...

I mean, a few non-Christians must be all, "who the hell is King David?????" Gotta explain such things.
yuiarakaki 2 years ago 2
i was reading the comments...and his name is DR Billy Graham.

I think its a fair statement, whether I agree or not.
merlynDHZ 2 years ago 38
@merlynDHZ but he does disingenuously imply that religion CAN solve the problems..when infact religion has demonstrated to do quite the opposite. Further, he has also done more to harm mankind than 99.9% of the people judging him here.
boorens18 1 year ago
@boorens18 You really think a man that fought to end segregation, world hunger, and war is the worst person out of a selection of 1000. If you don't agree with him fine but trying to condescend another person's beliefs, a dead man at that, is what leads to what is often misattributed as the "crimes of religion"
Awesnap 1 year ago
@Awesnap hey man...billy graham's not dead yet.
mistersleeepy 1 year ago
@merlynDHZ "embetter the human race.." haha demonstrates you know nothing of Billy Graham. The guy openly threw anti-semtic remarks around heads of state. (especially harmful seeing as he was considered an advisor) He spent his life encouraging ignorance (faith)...thats his legacy...and then he disingenuously implies faith can answer the problems he lists. How about when I do more harm then that I stop criticizing him?
boorens18 1 year ago
@boorens18

Evil happens because of human beings, not religion.
railstay 3 years ago
Social stability=unity through faith, moral code=faith is morality, education=prayer in school, love for fellow man=love of destruction because more people have died in religion's name than ANY other cause. There is NO reference to the bible in the Constitution that I know of. (Not sure about English common law.) As far as the contribution to the hospitals how did they get that money? What did they sell?
themanofearth 3 years ago
As far as the douchebag thing: Im not trying to say that religion has never done anything good; Im just saying that the only things that religion has ever done have been self-serving and nothing more. Its a business, not the salvation of mankind.

De4sher 3 years ago
