I own one of these modified by adding a Europa chip, run through a Roland Se50 Effects and coupled to an Oberheim 1000 (wish I had more of these linked up). In the studio or onstage, to me, this is the best of the MIDI-1 synths. They cost $9000 when they were new. But now you can find them for as little as $200. Make sure you have the Roland sustain pedal, several stomp switches and you need two Roland Stereo keyboard pedals ($200 apiece). I used Peavy amps with 15" Daytons.
I've had a number of synths, and the Jupiter-6 is the one I've kept. Why? I've found I can create just about any analog synth sound on it that I want, not that it's always easy to dial them in. It can take patience and careful tweaking of the controls. Compared to many of the synths to which it's frequently compared on these youtube pages, it's extremely stable and reliable--much less likely to end up a non-repairable doorstop.
@arpodyssey1 The more I've been toying with synths like the V-synth and even the D50 the more I think, analogue has its place for certain sounds but digital absolutely blows it away for a much wider palette of sounds and in some cases can sound very analogue. Going through some of the old D50 patches I'd swear I was hearing a vintage on some of the patches. I am still in shock because the presets do nothing to suggest its potential.
@maccagrabme That's what a lot of newcomers to synths don't realize -- that analog has a very limited sound palette. Many synth keyboardists abandoned analog in the 80's after they realized how much more digital can do than analog. These days you are much better off with a V-Synth than buying a beat up synth that is 30 years old, if not more sometimes, such as the old MiniMoogs.
Thanks very much. As far as expression, the dynamics were controlled not with volume, but with the filters. Can't remember if I used the panel slider or the CV pedal (dod FX17). You don't hear cv pedals used much on ytube but they are powerful expression controllers for straight analog synths.
Very true, and still learning. Pointless to compare it with the jp8, the two are like siblings - different as night and day. Just acquired a prophet 600, another brilliant analog synth. These units are, in the words of our illustrious ex-pres, totally "misunderestimated".
Congrats, I wouldn't mind having a Prophet 600 either.. The JP6 and the JP8 each have advantages over the other. The JP6 is cheaper and very close to the JP8. I also just acquired a Korg Polysix. (Another awesome synth).
I have to agree. The JP is a "cooler" punchier sound. To my ears the curtis 3320 filter (ob8, p5, elka synthex, etc) gives a more subtle, distant, expansive effect. My ob8 was like that and I have to assume the p5 sounds like that although I've never had the chance to play one. I wonder, can the p5 get in your face like a jupiter can? What do you think?
I've heard some exciting demo's of the new prophet 8 but have yet to play one. Perhaps it provides at least some of that old CEM 3320 style warmth and character, in a newer box that can be repaired by the manufacturer. A P5 could possibly be found for same $, but would almost certainly need repair.

@fromtinyacorns Hmm well, I think the Access Virus is the best keyboard on the face of this earth. That, and the Omnisphere.

I own a Jupiter 6 myself, and I tell you that it is one of the best synths ever made. You just have to learn how to work with it.

I owned two of them, and they just didn't sound warm to my ears.
This became quite apparent when I A/B'd it with my prophet 5

I think that the j-6 overall, isn't as punchy as the american synths.....but it's still good.
I have a prophet-5, and it literally blows away the j6 for warmth, phatness, character, and massiveness!
The p5 is perhaps the synth with the most sonic personality of any synth in history..
I've heard the j-8 in action, and it's warmer than the j-6.
I have a roland jx-8p, which to my ears, sounds warmer than the j-6

The Jupiter is steel and leather. The 600 is mist and velvet. Love them both.

@fromtinyacorns
The roland synths are not "in your face" synths. The American synths are what you are referring to.

Thanks - these JP6's show up on ebay from time to time. They're very versatile - check out JMPsynth's "Jupiter 6 Track Demo" here on youtube.
