  • I meant to spell interpretative music in my last post.Forgive my lack of editing.

  • Has no one hear ever taken interprative music? If you've ever gotten your heart broken or been jilted you are going to rage , beat your fist(on the microphone),wail,(like a cat or dog)like he did in his song.Think about how much voice control it took to reach the voice effect he was trying to get.He did this on purpose and you all are confounded with his yodeling and wailing. He is an amazing artist and is laughing for being an enigma to you.

  • You simply could not pull off these vocal gymnastics if you were drunk. It's just damn clever.

  • "This Bud's for yooouuuuu!"

  • Chances are good that he WAS drunk. Leon loves him his Jagermeister and has been known to perform when quite "loose" shall we say. A few bottles of booze are required to be in the dressing room for his performances.

  • Not drunk, just having fun with the song.

  • I, too, saw Leon in Ann Arbor. I had a roommate there who ran lights at various venues and he personally witnessed Leon and his tuba player getting HAMMERED on a fifth of Jack Daniels before going on stage. He sure appeared intoxicated to me. Maybe it is an act --sometimes -- but I have it on solid authority that that's not the case other times (like when I saw him).

That said, Leon rocks, drunk or otherwise.

  • Just like a good single malt...well aged, smoky, complex, with vibrant overtones! :)

  • LEON WAS DRINKING WHEN I PLAYED WITH HIM AND CINDY CASHDOLLAR BUT WASN'T DRUNK...

  • oh I just can't stop smiling this is so awesome. I am so HOOKED on Leon. Thanks for this one it truly is great :)

  • Is he playing the harmonica, too?

  • Take the song in its context, it is a song 'bout a moanin' drunk singin' his blues. Just goes to show Leon can act too. Versitile AND Coooool!!!!

  • He's not drunk...what he is, is one of America's treasures...a man who can bridge 100 years of music - and nobody like Leon exists today....

  • I saw Leon in Ann Arbor. He had a rhythm guitar accompanist dude, and he let him go on for a few bars while Mista Redbone did this complicated one-handed hand-jive stuff. Wotta hoot.. It looks like your still pic might be of that routine. Leon is a national treasure, and he's 'ported' great old tunes to us like that Archivist Recorder gent did with the field hollers. LONG MAY HE WAVE...

  • So coo, ice should form..... The man is a genius.

  • He doesn't drink, this is his sound, I have seen him in concert many times, this is HIS sound... he is awesome... and if he was drunk he couldn't play like this, it was probably the entire room that was drunk and he was messing with them... hahahaha

  • I saw him at the U of I Auditorium in Urbana Illinois in 1975 (he warmed up Leo Kottke). What a show! He was dressed in a tuxedo with tails and he pulled a pint of JD out and was sipping it the whole show. So, he very well could have been drunk. But this was also his schtick, so it's hard telling.

  • Talent, charisma, and a tad of mystery. Adds up exponetially... If we were to slow down and savor as Leon Redbone always does on this performances, we'd live a lot longer... "we ran the race...the race was won...by running slowly."

  • Is he really Frank Zappa? Could some please tell me what Diddie Wah Diddie means?

  • @woos2045

DIDDY WAH DIDDY WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED BY BO DIDDLEY IN 1956. IT WAS A "MYTHICAL" PLACE. IT WASN'T REAL !

  • @woos2045

DIDDY WAH DIDDY WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED BY BO DIDDLEY IN 1956. IT WAS A "MYTHICAL" PLACE. IT WASN'T REAL !

TRY GOGGLING : "DIDDY WAH DIDDY WIKIPEDIA"

  • @BMSMUSIC Diddy wah diddy was recorded by Blind Blake in october 1927. And it wasn't a place.

  • @woos2045 it means fucking.

  • @woos2045 well, from an alabama blues woman, that's for me to know and u to find out....mmmm?

  • Is he really Frank Zappa?

  • There ain't nobody.....like Leon Redbone. He's an authentic replicator of a sound that may or may not have existed. Who knows? He may have been playing in the cat houses in Nawlins back in the 50's...the 1850's, that is. Has anyone seen this guy out of character without those shades?

  • Ummm... I believe he's at least 21 no? Leon rocks!

  • He ain't drunk, he's just a gigolo....sort of.

  • He's better drunk than I could ever be sober.

  • Absolutely unique and very very special

  • definitely drunk, I've worked backstage at places he's played. Leon pounds the whiskey. Part of the act? YES. Drunk in reality? YES

  • wish there was video on this where was it ?

  • be sure i hear this at 3:50 ho ho hehe

  • i know no better music like this, very good... einwandfrei

  • @potatoepeter1 yes. danke. Americans aren't ALL stupid right? or are we...

  • Sweet!

  • Just Leon being Leon. Not drunk.

  • is not drunk-i know this is very good

  • thnx

  • yhnx

  • I think Leon is dramatizing the song as a lonely drunk drowning his sorrows in alcohol. He masterfully and incredibly entertainingly brought music from the 30s and 40s into the 70s and 80s. I listened to him then and in nostalgic reminisce listen again.

  • absolute classic. true Leon Redbone tune, what an artist.

  • hes great even drunk

  • I know he's not drunk. It's all a part of his act. I think he's awesome! Bilco nailed it... "Zappa on Valium." LMAO! I pulled that song out of a live recording I have. I have 4 awesome live shows from the '80's.

  • @silviodantejr Zappa?? Nothing like Zappa as far as I can tell. Are you talking about his looks or his music? He's playing traditional Ragtime music.

  • @silviodantejr "Zappa on Valium" !!! HA thats awesome!

  • Gotta love Redbone. Absolute master!

  • oh my gooood. this is it!

  • I love Redbone. He's like Zappa on Valium.

  • Drunk? have you never heard him sing before? wtf - he's' classic

  • not drunk - The guitar has been drinkin' not he.

  • @topangapan: EXCELLENT OBSERVATION......I think YOU are correct sir!

  • @topangapan

    Tom Waits familly maybe?

  • I can't wait to see him in Missoula in April. His shows sound fun as hell.

  • He played at the Brackendale Art Gallery Restaurant B.C., I recall now. I was the Chef! Redbone has tasted my yummy food. During the rocking 70's. Great Memories

  • I still have this album with the frog on it. Listening to him for 30 years. Glad the youth are going to the classic of fine Musicans and Thanks so much I don't have a record player any more

  • I still have the record player, JVC and still spin the wax on it,and still use the bose 901 corner speakers, aaaah Clark lake in the good-ole days.

  • Agreed - this aint drunk. I've seen Leon far more tipsy than this, this is just part of his act. There was the time in I.C. back in '83 when he missed the curtain call 5 or 6 times before the show finally began. He was still fantastic and worth the wait!

  • Ya kiddin' me?? SOBER I can't play like this. Leon Redbone is a true classic....

  • Great performance! When and where was this recorded, silviodantejr? Thanks for this!

  • Y'all sayin' he ain't drunk is right. Dat Leon. He always been dat way. Not only the control over the guitar, but listen to what he's doing with his voice. He's one of our precious icons. One of a kand.

  • he's sober, he ain't misbehavin

  • He's not drunk... he's Leon Redbone!

  • The acting lessons paid off. LOL

  • I dont think anyone that was "drunk" would have that much control over guitar, harmonica and certainly his voice.
