Nice speed metal version! I remember getting this live album when it came out. I was so curious to hear how this "new Ripper guy" was going to handle the old material. I wish Halford still sounded this good, and he could have, if he quit smoking 20 years ago. Cigarettes can really damage a singer's range. Halford seems to point the mic at the crowd a lot and just can't hit and sustain those crucial stratospheric notes like Ripper does.
@apedemartini However Rob's mid range is still strong and clear. He should really be the new singer for Black Sabbath now that Dio has passed and Ozzy is, well, Ozzy. Anyone who's heard those November '92 bootlegs knows he performs Ozzy and Dio eras phenomenally
@apedemartini The fact that he's 60 years old and has been singing his throat out for more than 45 years is certainly a factor too, Ripper is still young.
@DavidDavidsonful Absolutely, age/long career is a big factor. Even with a loss in higher registers I gotta say he still sings better than a lot of the newer guys on the scene, though.
@megapurify it´s just a halftone step down. jugulator was detuned, that why they played everything else detuned too. in 40 days and I see them again for the last time but without K.K. :( Hail to the Metal Gods!
Ripper kills it here for sure...and it's not Rob Vs Tim - we got them both....Tim will be singing JP songs for years to come, long after they are gone. The guitar players for Halfords band - Metal Mike and Roy Z....are incredible and the LOVE Glenn and KK - those are there heroes. Rob is Tim's HERO - why attack Tim Owens for kicking ass when given the chance? The entire album is great.
@ChaosMaster7 the real judas priest is with rob halford, everyone knows that. this 'singer' sucks big time. now go fuk yo mommy, I just kicked my dog off her, you chaosmasterpussy wahahaha xD
I loved this version live for no other reason than they actually played it, which they hadn't done for year. And Ripper does a great job.
Kind of makes me wonder what it would have been like if Ralf Scheppers of Gamma Ray had joined. Hell Kai Hansen if he wasn't awesome enough in his own band.
This version kicks ass!!!! Ripper had some big shoes to fill, and he did so admirably. I saw them 5 times during his tenure, and he never failed. Halford has done nothing but disappoint since his return. He has no range anymore, but that's what 30 years of being the greatest screamer in metal will do.And his presence onstage is still unbeatable. But vocally, he's toast. And this is coming from a lifelong fan. I'll still be there front row next tour. Priest rules!!!
@Cmartelful watch halford hit some high notes like the one on the 30th year british steel tour in hollywood. like at the end of metal gods, and then tell me he has no range anymore
Maybe I am just an old school JP fan... but there is no beating Rob. This song...any song... is just a cover as far as I am concerned. The wqhole "rapid fire before you die" part is lame IMHO. I am a purist and there is no Priest if there isn't Rob. I dont mind the Ripper originals... but any of Rob's songs are his...his alone and cannot be improved upon unless its Rob doin' the improvin'
Like I said though... I am a Defender of the Faith.
@azrock4ever i would agree with you 100% if it were any other priest song, but he definitely took rapid fire to a new level. though the chorus is gay i'll agree with that, but come one, he screams half the song and it makes my ears bleed, it's awesome
Holy hell, the double bass drum kicked ass, the new chorus worked perfectly, the guitar is way heavier and that wah on the duel was face melting... Way better than the original. Hey, have I told that the double bass drum owned?
@guitartur Yes it was! They even recorded this version in the studio! KK and Glenn probably wanted the song to get a heavier image. This version is much more powerfull when Ripper sings it. Probably the only Priest song he does better than Halford.
Ripper is great on this song, Althogh Rob is still much better, Ripper's vocals fits very well with this song also. But Songs for example, like "Victim Of Changes" belongs only to The Metal God, The One and The Only, ROB FUCKIN' HALFORD!
@XugarXhampoo Fuck yeah! I saw them on the Britsh Steel anniversary tour they opened with rapid fire and it was cool but this version with Ripper is fuckin awesome! And I love the way you described it because it absolutely "bleeds with rage and energy"!!!
This is NOT Rob Halford on vocals. This is Ripper Owens, who filled in for Rob Halford while he pursued side projects. Rob Halford came back to Judas Priest later.
Rob Halford was the #1 voice in metal history, but Ripper Owens had a great voice himself -- and better than Halford in his older age.
Judas Priest the band lays it down no matter what with the DOUBLE GUITAR ATTACK of Tipton and Downing.
Ripper didn't exactly "fill in" for Halford while "he persued side projects". Ripper got the part in the band as a permanent member, until Halford decided to return. Prerty much the same situation with Blaze Bailey in Iron Maiden when Dickinson decided to return.
This is the best version o this song i have heard. In most cases i believe that Halford is better then Ripper, but the more i listen to this song i get the feeling of that Halford got alot to learn from Ripper.
I don't like the Ripper Era so much. It lost very much of the brilliancy Judas Priest had with Halford. But Ripper is a good singer. I prefer the Painkiller era and the actual.
The Ripper did a pretty awesome version here, but of course, Halford is the only Metal God. And they've added a chorus to this version, that's not on the British Steel-version, and that makes it even more awesome. Wow, Ripper gotta be my favourite vocalist after Halford..!
Those 2 Ripper albums blow Nostradamus out of the water, Halford's vocals are shot, I hope that touring helps strengthen his voice a bit more, Tim Owens has had no luck, fired from Priest and Iced Earth, still it's 2 jobs any vocalist would kill for
It still sold in the top ten biggest sellers of 08, so financially they're fine, but musically i think they're in trouble, i'm going to see them with testament and megadeth end of the month, so i'll tell you if they're shot live too
They had a 2 day break before playing Wembley, so Rob's voice was on fine form, the band were absolutely on fire, that night, blew Testament and Megadeth offstage , a truly superb performance, Testament were better in the club I saw them play 2 nights before in front of 300 people,
I think the next Priest album will see them get back to what we expect from them, Nostradamus was something they'd wanted to do for a long time for themselves imo, the next album will go back to what they do best
FUCKIN' IRATE, MATE, STICK IT UP YOUR ASSES AND ENJOY IT, pure adrenalin, British Heavy Metal, but Owens is not British, Halford is, if Owens didn't make Priest sound good, Halford would of kicked his American ass, "YOU WANKER!!"
