Recently, the self-immolation of monks in Tibetan-populated area of Sichuan Province has shocked not only the masses but also the Buddhists, as nobody would have believed that these practitioners and disseminators of boundlessly benefiting from Buddhist doctrines have cast away their vows "to cultivate endless merits for all sentient beings" and ended up in such a way of avijja, brutality and extremism.
Renowned religion expert Li Decheng, director of the Religion Department of China Tibetology Research Center wrote an article specifically elaborating his view on the self-immolation occurrence with an insightful observation of the principal Buddhist commandments.
In the article published on CNN, Li Decheng pointed out that the suicidal behavior is in defiance of the precious life, seriously violating the core gist of Buddhism and wantonly trampling the principal Buddhist doctrines.

Whether one is voluntarily or taken in to commit suicide, the conduct itself has seriously violated the fundamental commandment, and it is a criminal act.
However, when the miseries happened, some people ignored the fundamental commandment, dubbing the act as a "noble one for the utmost kindness"; some even claimed that "the self-immolation was a religious behavior to show sacrifice for the Bodhisattva and that happed in the past."
Since Buddhism was founded, the precept against life killing has been substantially accepted by all believers. But what is unbelievable is that those malicious speakers beat the drum for such irrational acts as self-immolations. And this, on the other hand clearly has exposed the vicious scheme of the backstage manipulators. Besides, according to Buddhist commandments, it also has committed Pārājika-dharma to kill oneself for believing in instigations and slanders.
In short, Buddhist doctrines teach that Pārājika is committed when someone believes in "no good deeds, no value of life" or "good deeds lead to ascension".
No killing is the fundamental Buddhist commandment, which not only strongly opposes and firmly forbids killing, including abetting killing, encouraging killing, and disregarding killing,etc, but also actively advocates people to abandon killing and to save lives.
Any form of killing is a serious violation against essential commandments of Buddhism and commits ultimate guilt. To save life is boundless benevolence.
In the world today, it is a common value to cherish life and oppose suicide. Especially for any religious followers, suicide is a symbol of evil, definitely prohibited in any country on earth.
And it is common sense and consensus of all countries to fight against religious extremism and violent terrorist activities in religious disguise.

How much property did the 14th Dalai Lama own before fleeing Tibet in 1959?
A great deal, according to a white paper titled Fifty Years of Democratic Reform in Tibet , recently published by the Information Office of the State Council. Following is an article published in the People's Daily Thursday in response to readers' inquiries:
In 1959, the Dalai Lama personally owned 160,000 liang (a Chinese weighing unit equal to 50 grams) of gold, 95 million liang of silver, more than 20,000 pieces of jewelry and jadeware, and more than 10,000 pieces of silk and satin fabric and rare fur clothing, including more than 100 robes inlaid with pearls and gems, each worth tens of thousands of yuan.
Before sweeping democratic reform was launched by the central government in 1959, Tibetan people had suffered under a system of feudal serfdom at the hands of religious-political rulers.
The serf-owner class, consisting of three major estate-holders - local administrative officials, aristocrats and upper-class monastery lamas - exerted extremely brutal political suppression and economic exploitation on the serfs and slaves.
About 90 percent of old Tibet's population was made up of serfs, called tralpa in Tibetan (namely, people who tilled plots of land assigned to them and had to provide corvee labor for their serf owners) and duiqoin (small households with chimneys emitting smoke).
Statistics released in the early years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in the 17th century indicate that Tibet then had more than 3 million mu of farmland, of which 30.9 percent was owned by the local feudal government, 29.6 percent by aristocrats, and 39.5 percent by monastery and upper-ranking lamas.
The monopoly of means of production by the three major estate-holders remained unchanged until the adoption of democratic reforms in 1959.
According to statistics, the family of the 14th Dalai Lama possessed 27 manors, 30 pastures and more than 6,000 serfs. About 33,000 ke (one ke equals 14 kilograms) of qingke (highland barley), 2,500 ke of butter, two million liang of Tibetan silver, 300 head of cattle, and 175 rolls of pulu (woolen fabric made in Tibet) were squeezed out of its serfs every year.
It is known that each Dalai Lama had two money-lending agencies. Some money from "tribute" to the Dalai Lama was lent at an exorbitant rate of interest.
According to incomplete records in the account books of the two agencies, they lent 3,038,581 liang of silver as principal in 1950, and collected 303,858 liang in interest the same year. Governments of various levels in the old Tibet also had many such agencies, and lending money and interest collection became a duty of local officials.
A survey made in 1959 showed that the three major monasteries, namely Drepung, Sera and Ganden, in Lhasa, lent a total of 22,725,822 kilograms of grain and collected 399,364 kilograms in interest.
Also, a total of 57,105,895 liang of silver was lent for 1,402,380-liang interest.
Relevant statistics show revenue gained from usurious loans made up 25 to 30 percent of the total incomes of the three monasteries.

The second meeting on Nepal-China' s Tibet Trade Facilitation Committee (NTTFC) began here on Monday.
The Nepali team is led by Toya Narayan Gyawali,Joint Secretary at Ministry of Commerce and Supplies and Ye Yinchuan, Deputy Secretary General of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, is leading the Chinese delegation.
The meeting commonly understood as "Nepal-China trade talk" in Nepal is aimed to enhance bilateral trade between the two countries.
The meeting will review progress on implementation of the first NTTFC meeting and it will also discuss the implementation of Duty Free Access (Zero Tariff) for Nepalese products.
Removal of Non-Tariff barriers including customs procedures, quarantine, local taxes is one of the agendas that dominate the meeting. Meanwhile,infrastructure improvement at major custom points including planning and building of border points is also considered to be important.
Besides these, the meeting is scheduled to discuss Chinese foreign investment in Nepal, capacity building, and China's Tibet- Nepal Economic and Trade Fair.
The first meeting of NTTFC was held in Lhasa of China in April 2010.
Since the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, China has attached unprecedented importance to the preservation of Tibetan cultural heritage. The Central Government has made a series of favorable policies toward the protection and promotion of traditional Tibetan culture in various forms, which have reaped fruitful results.
According to the aid-Tibet program, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) and all provincial cultural relic units take positive measures to help the protection of Tibetan cultural relics.
SACH organized special work conferences in 1997, 2001 and 2007 respectively to call on nationwide cultural relics to help and support the preservation of Tibetan cultural relics in aspects of capital, equipment, talents and professional technology with actual fund of over 30 million yuan and relevant equipments.

It was great to hear a well articulated Chinese side to the story but where are to maps that are not Chinese? For most of history Tibet was considered independent by the rest of the world and that the real point of "Free Tibet." Before the invasion in 1949 Tibetans couldn't speak any form of Chinese or read characters and they knew next to nothing about Han culture.

Up to 1,200 rural patients in China will receive free cataract removal operations sponsored by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, according to an official with the federation.
Qiao Wei, vice chairman of the federation, said the program, which seeks to help poor patients have their eyesight restored, was part of its broader efforts to promote health awareness in rural regions of China.
Rural patients in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and provinces of Anhui, Henan and Hubei, will benefit from the program this year, he said.

This isn't a game where one is trying to assemble the largest country possible. The goal here is to improve the quality of life of the citizens. E.g. It is known that each Dalai Lama had two money-lending agencies. Some money from "tribute" to the Dalai Lama was lent at an exorbitant rate of interest.
According to incomplete records in the account books of the two agencies, they lent 3,038,581 liang of silver as principal in 1950, and collected 303,858 liang in interest the same year. Governments of various levels in the old Tibet also had many such agencies, and lending money and interest collection became a duty of local officials.

It was great to hear a well articulated Chinese side to the story but where are to maps that are not Chinese? For most of history Tibet was considered independent by the rest of the world and that the real point of "Free Tibet." Before the invasion in 1949 Tibetans couldn't speak any form of Chinese or read characters and they knew next to nothing about Han culture.
