If they wouldn't have killed Constance and Orry, 3 would have worked for me. The only thing I enjoyed in N & S 3 was Charles and Willa. LS was the best Charles, but KC wasn't too bad, either
The friendship between O & G was the best part of the whole series. To get rid of that just kills the series. If one had to die....kill @ the end.
I agree, after they killed Orry off they forgot about him for the most part. It is kind of hard to do that when he was the main character. They did the best they could to make it work but they failed big time in my book
OMG This was the best miniseries ever. I want to get this on DVD. So many of the actors in it are gone including Jean Simmons, David Carradine and Robert Mitchum and, Patrick Swayze. May they all R.I.P.
Friends, I'm interested in your opinion! What do you think, which is better?
I tell the important differences in the book:
Virgilia doesn't die & she helps Madeline to save Mont Royal & defeat Ashton! Orry dies in the end of the war! Not George was in Libby prison, it was Billy! Constance run to fat! Cooper is in the whole story! He escapes to England because of Tillet and works in the navy! Clarissa shocked after Tillet's death, later stroke & doesn't remember her family! Stanley cheats Isabel!
I think, the whole story is good! :) I have read the books too, many things are different like in the series but I like both story! :)
I can understand you don't like the 3, and yes, it wasn't good that an other actor played Charles, but I think that part has its good historical experience and good story, too! :)
@GerbrandThunder1 No, Orry died in book 2... I have just read the whole 1-2-3 books the last months! So in this scene Orry shouldn't have to live... but I love borth stories! The original story is good too, and I think the whole series is good, too! There are many-many things in the 2 series what is different... for example, Virgilia doesn't die, and she transforms to a good woman in the book 3! And I like series 3 too because the most things is the same like the book 3! :)
The 3rd part was an absolute joke .. It was rubbish. When part 2 ended, one of the greatest mini series and greatest stories ever told ended so Its hard to imagine that they would return quite a few years later with a 3rd part which made a complete mess of everything. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I too think Book III was bad and I was shocked at the writer's direction but that is how I guess he saw it. I def agree it did not go overwell with fans.
Simarmis (sp) and Ezra build a successful farm and raise a large family there...and Ashton gets just what she deserves....James tosses her out on the street and she has to live like the ho' she is...
I agree with most of you ...Book III was awful. As far as I'm concerned, the story ends here. I like to think when they walk off at the end, here is what happens.
Orry and Madeline re-build Mt. Royal and raise their children there...Charles becomes their estate manager, marries a nice woman and they raise Gus together
George and Constance return to Belvedere and become leading members of the community
Billy is re-assigned to Washington D.C. and has a distinguished career in the army
@soulgirl66 I totally agree with you. That's how it should've happen. Book III was just AWFUL!!!! I hated and was furious that Madeline ended up with Geroge. And then we find out that Orry, Ashton and Brett had an older brother that didn't appear and wasn't even mentioned til then. Orry was killed and the actor for Charles was replace and it's mostly focused on him! WTF?!
I picked up the Videos set of Book 1 and Book 2 for 50cents each and have just watched nearly right ot the end where the last video tape was damaged. It had got to where Mont Royal was attacked and set on fire by Salem Jones and Coffee and Orry was carrying his unconcious mother away from the house ... then static!!
So pleased to find some of the ending here. Any chance of you loading the second last part of the ending please?
This miniseries to me reinstated to me a sense of Southern honor and shows that two friends can stay friends even during the test of war and hardship. Thank you Patrick Swayze for showing a young child who was raised in the south what it is ment to be Southern Gentleman.
I think the funeral attire is symbolizing the death of America's innocence, and the loss of so many friends and loved ones. Also, the reason for them walking away from Mont Royal symbolizes walking away from the past and moving forward into the uncertain future, but they are moving forward together; It will be hard, but they can make it. Well, that's my take on it.
I love the first two North and South series!!! Yes, the third one sucked. It was stupid that Madeline and George got together and I don't like how there's a different actor for the role of Charles. Well if you read the second book, that's where Orry is supposed to die and he's not suppose to come home like George, Billy and Charles.
Hahaha now my question is, where did they get thier black funeral clothers from?

I loved the North and South series but I have to agree that my very least favorite of all three books/movies was Heaven and Hell. The first two movies were outstanding. I absolutely loved Patrick Swayze's acting after seeing this. Gosh I miss that man so much!! RIP Patrick!!
I agree with most of you. I thought the third book Heaven and Hell was just awful. I know it was John Jakes story and that is the way he wrote it..but the way they killed Ory and Madeline and George ending up together was just wrong. Plus, Mount Royale still was not rebuilt!
could you also post the scene where Orry and Charles rescue George from a prison camp in the south.
And where Orry and George come face to face on the battle field towards the end of the mini series and how George rescues Orry from a prison camp I believe
Okay, one more time, just in case anyone's still doubting: The thrid series doesn't just suck, it doesn't even exist! BUT this ending is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on TV (goes for both two series, by the way)! best TV-show ever!
I loved 'North and South', and I have to say I don't understand this ending. Why are they just walking down the road? Where are their carriages? Where are they going? What's going on?
The ending of N & S made sense. This didn't. The least they should have done was have them drive out in carriages. How did they GET there?
When this first aired, I promised myself i would not get involved, thinking it would be junk--but I got abosolutely hooked--It really made me think, if these two men and families could stay friends, how did the country come to Civil War-- and realize
that the Civil war wasn't just about slavery. And Faithstars you are right--the
North and South 3 was pure utter garbage! Books 1-2 were the best.
