The fact that West Rome fell to savage, illiterate heathens meant that the European civilization lost nigh on 1 000 years in its development. Imagine if West Rome had survived or been supplanted by a similarly advanced state - by now we would've started colonizing our galaxy!
The word "barbar" (or english: Barbarian) comes from old greek and simply means: People who not are greeks. It doesn't mean "Wild" or "beserk". The greeks called the romans barbarians but the romans weren't wild or beserk.
This video is good showing the greatness of the noble barbarians that defended themselves from Rome and showed no mercy on there foes nice music as well.
@seahorseofvenice The term barbarian just keeps evolving. I am sure the Minoans perceived the Greeks as barbarians prior to being overtaken by them. I am sure the Greeks didnt have a huge amount of respect for the Romans during their initial contact either. The Goths would be the most latest group to start adopting Greco Roman culture. Prior to that, the Romans most likely didnt have a huge amount of respect for anything that wasnt Roman or Hellenistic.
@Lordofthenipplerings The Germanic tribes showed a huge amount of respect for Roman culture even after conquering it. Continued to operate under the Roman Catholic Church and some factions even called themselves the Holy Roman Empire. But ultimately, they began to move their separate ways. The Protestant reformation encouraged the interpretation of the bible along with other literature to be written in non-Latin languages. Usually conforming to indigenous languages such German, French, etc.
@Lordofthenipplerings This drive towards nationalism and a unique self identity meant Rome was simply a memory, reduced to an inspiration. There is no faction on earth today that can legitimately claim itself the Roman Empire or the Roman Republic.
@Lordofthenipplerings the americans in alot of ways can claim succession to ncient rome. theyre both republics, they both have a decent 'claim' to land not through might, but through cultural infiltration. which the romans arguably did more conquest with, and the replacment of old wayswith their cultures i.e killing of celtic druids etc.
they both contain the wealthiest cities in the world. with, interestingly, fast food vendors, and apartments, as well as cheap public entertainment.
@elgostine americans arent Romans. I guess they could claim successor-ship in a metaphorical sort of way. But under political doctrine, Rome died when it fell to the Goths. The Byzantines had a strong claim on Rome. So in a more liberal view, although Eastern Rome didnt actually control Rome, the Empire didnt fall until the 1400s.
@Lordofthenipplerings oh yeah, in that way i agree, though normally i distinguish the romans and the byzantines to be two different groups, at least for ease of differentiation, being the romans means 'guys based in rome, died out 400AD, byzantines, guys in constantinople from 400-1400AD
They were barbarians. They would evolve into civilized cultures after having replaced Rome and adopting its linguistic system and the philosophy and political views that came with it.
If there was one thing they werent it was barbarians! These people were such as intelegent as the Romans! And brave and honroble folk that had great morals and civilization
thanx.we dont no enough about these peoples.no 1 seems to agree about what they werelike.tatoos,no tatoos??,tall, short.blond, not blond, smart??dumb??i wish more movies/documentries were made other than sparticus/caesar,wars in gaul that reflect rome and all its enemies/allies
the berbers nowadays were the barbarians then the romans called us barbaros: barbarians.....we were the first with all people having blond hair and clear blue eyes.
infact alott of the american arian brotherhoods believe that the berbers were the first true arians aswell...
Sure, everybody was barbarian and the Romans were the most civiliated people in Europe. Biggest shit ever, the Huns had spoken a lot of languages before the Romans and their state was more modern than the Roman one.
It must be but it's probably McBride who has illustrated it so he probably says it's Saxons. Wich is FALSE. I don't know why he does this. But people think Anglo-Saxons looked like Vendel warriors did.
Fuck off Barbarians. Rome got sacked by us Celts we screwed you dogs up!

@Lordofthenipplerings Although I assume the Italians or maybe the Greeks would have a stronger claim than anyone else.
