This is exactly what I am looking for to do to the wolf that I have in my senior thesis. Wold you mind hitting me up in email, so we can discuses maps and how you did this amazing fur? my email is yanosova@c.ringling.edu. Thanks so much! I look forward to hearing from you.
Well for a start, you might want to fix the anatomy before worry about fur :P The legs are a tad too long ^^
But yus, I totally agree with you. Fur is a pain in the ass, however because it's so good in the movies, they take... ages to render :P Have you figured out how to do bulkier long hair? Your wolfie needs longer belly hair and neck hair. But, it looks loads better than those wolves in Alpha and Omega, haha XD
@Melazee01 Thanks for the critique. I am currently working on a long-haired cat. I've found that if you start with one of the preset fur descriptions (pick one that best matches the fur you're trying to make), it's much easier to get what you want with a bit less trial and error. I think I started from scratch on this wolf, and yeah, it sure was a pain in the ass, lol.
:) when i first saw ur video i that u were talking about me only.......................it hurt when we see some good stuff and we arn't able to do that>>> :)
LOL, I love the side effects. very true. I am working on a baby panda right now and trying to get the fur right. It has been killing me. I got the fluffiest parts to look ok, but the face looks like a stuffed animal. (I know this video is old, but the fur looks really great. it's the eyes and nose that are incredibly distracting.)
1. I don't remember the complete render time... I want to say it was about 7 minutes/frame, but I'm not sure.
2. I've never used Shave and a Haircut, but I've heard about it. It sounded pretty cool to me. I know a lot of people hate using Maya Fur, but Maya Fur is not impossible. You can try Shave, but you can also get to know Maya Fur, too. Once you learn more about it and how to troubleshoot its problems, things get easier. Remember: UV and Fur attribute maps are key!
OMG! COOL VID! Is maya fur a COMEPLETLY different program to maya? or is it maya, but you download an extra part for it or its a tool installed into it. please reply!!! 5/5
Maya Fur is a plug-in for Maya and is used within Maya. You can buy the software with or without it, and I'm not sure if it can be downloaded or not. Glad you liked my vid!
This is one of those vids that give me hope while depress me in the same time :(
I WANT A RENDER-FARM!!!! :(
Why I never get what I want :(
My biggest problem with fur its simply because its DAMN UNPREDICTABLE it renders different every time I change my scene, its some strait lines, color changes, bugs etc... WHY CANT THEY MAKE IT SIMPLY WORK....!?!? HOW HARD is to make damn fur follow the normals and then simply bend and change direction to where you set it??? :(
Yeah, Fur really sucks like that - being unpredictable. I feel your pain. I think the best way to keep it rendering the way you made it is to use an attribute map on everything you edited - that way you can input those maps and it should render the way you had it. I always have trouble with Direction so I use Polar for direction instead. Also, don't forget to Bake every time before you render. Color change could be related to lighting and shadow/shading settings? Good luck!
Thanx for the tips man a lot! Attribute maps sound pretty damn awesome!(sorry still never used them :P)
I'm gonna definitely try them.
As for the lighting/shadowing, I am absolutely cool with it its just back and forth tweaking for me which is not that hard I quickly find what I want ;)
But for some other things I just don't have damn nerves :(
Such as when something is sometimes unpredictable or sometimes some small 4-8-pixel holes in my render...that just kills me :(
Wow! How did you get the fur so even and short around the face? I'm currently working on an undergrad project and am making a maya fur description for two llamas. I'm having troubles controlling the length of the fur when I use the paint attribute tool settings. Any tips?
I used attribute maps instead of the Paint Attribute Tool on certain things, like length. What you do is take a UV snapshot of your model and paint it in Photoshop with the black & white values according to how long you want the fur. (White is longest.) Then input the map sort of the same way you would input a texture by right-clicking the fur length attribute and choosing Create New Texture. Good luck! :-)
Fur is difficult because it is edited in an "indirect" way, it can take a long time to render, it is a trial and error process, and it tends to have odd problems. You just can't make good looking fur without a lot of time and effort. I guess knowing how to do Fur is easy, but the tweak attribute, wait for render, tweak attribute, wait for render and the problem solving is hard. Fur color maps work the same as texture maps on polygons; you can assign any texture to the Base/Tip Color attributes.
The IN YOU FACE attitude of the editing in your video is really really annoying. I was turned off by the music and text sitting there thinking, "just get to the freaking point."
But I must congrats at the fur, looks nice. I've always stayed away from fur and let the big studios handle that part.
Ohhh - just reading about crashing and not saving is painful! I'm glad you like my stuff. You're right, it's not as easy as it looks, but never give up. Best of luck on your bear!
By the way - if you post a video when you're done, I'd love to see it. :)
OMG..thats soo cool!! I want to pet him soo bad! You really have talent my friend!! =D It really surprised me when he said "I don't care"! Amazing! P.S. LOVE the mountain lion!
Thanks for the critique! The wolf's name is Damian, yeah, he's a bit odd looking for a wolf.... He doesn't blink when he turns because I took the blendshapes off of this model of him and didn't put them back on yet. I've been doing Maya for about a year, now. I'd say the best way to separate shorter fur from longer is by using length maps. You can actually map on attributes with grayscale values.
I bring the UV map into Photoshop, make a new layer and use the paint brush to color where I want longer and shorter fur to be, according to where the UVs and texture corresponds to on the model. Where I want the longest fur, I paint pure white, where I want no fur I paint black, and various lengths are various shades of gray.
The way to input a fur attribute map is: 1)select the furry object, 2)in the Fur pull-down menu, choose Edit Fur Description and pick the fur description, 3)in the attribute panel, right-click on the WORD Length and choose in the little menu Create New Texture, 4)in the Create Render Node window that pops up, choose the File button,
5)now the attribute panel will give you the little box you can type your file name in, just like with texturing. You're supposed to be able to paint the lengths in Maya with the artisan paint tool, but it's more unreliable. I've had trouble with maps, though, too. Notice the renders of Damian with a star on his face? I put that star on the Fur color map to see if the maps were updating (in those renders, they were). Good luck with your furry character!
Oh.. I don't know how to do blend shapes yet either =x After I posted the question above, I asked my lecturer about the fur and he refused to answer. He told me to find out myself. But after he saw that I did do some research on fur tutorials, he did a little fur on my character's tail and my god there's so many attributes!
He tweaked the fur for probably 30 mins and said that it would be easier to use a pen tablet instead of a mouse to comb the fur. It looked quite messy for a tail fur.
He also said "Why,why do you want fur? Texture!!!" after he was fed up tweaking. XD But we WANT fur! It looks much more realistic!
Thankyou very very very much for your help! *grateful*
You're welcome! When I was going to school for 3D, my instructor said 'no Fur' for a good reason. If you're taking a class, don't sacrifice your project getting done on time (and well) for Fur. If you can keep the render time down, work on it outside of class, and not make it the focus of your project, then I would do it. But if it's taking up too much time -- texture your character and give it Fur when class is over. You'll be surprised at what Fur can do in the face of a deadline. (Fur = Grr!)
Yeah, from what I've seen, making the fur look at least "nice" will take quite awhile... But no, I'm not doing it for a project, just for myself. I haven't done a full fledge model, rig, animate and render before.
My project is currently modifying a base model into another as a generic character for an animation series, currently doing paint weights =/
I myself am trying to make a big fluffy tail for a character of mine and short fur for the rest of the body. There don't seem to be many fur tutorials around... sadly.
The head part has the best render out of all the other parts. The tail fur length isn't long enough. The fur on the the legs are vaguely noticeable.
Yeah, it's really hard if you have never used it before and you try to teach yourself. I tried doing that with the Maya help and tutorial files and it was really discouraging. Then I started taking a class on it and at first it still seemed hard, but once you understand how Maya works, the hard part becomes the problem solving you might have to do if you run into a weird bug as you work. Also, I would say painting weights in Maya is hard, but some people don't mind it.
Brilliant video. Really made me think - I use Poser, and have been trying to figure out fur, but its really difficult. I hope to see you rendering for pixar soon =P

1.What was the complete rendertime of the scenes showed in this video?
2.Would you recommend me Shave and Haircut or Maya Fur? Is Shave and Haircut also unpredictable? is it faster/slower to render?
If you are experienced with Shave & Haircut please let me know!
Thank you! ^^
