  • 0:04 Pop-up headlights up the cool factor by a billion percent.

  • "Classic Top Gear.... Ambitious....., but rubbish" - Jeremy Clarkson

  • It's old.

  • the old top gear song sounds like sunday driving music.

The new one sounds like...well, Top Gear.

  • @BlueKewne the song is "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers, and this was the original version.... today's "top gear" is still "Jessica" but a remix

  • Tonight! A red car drives on the road! A white car drives on some dirt! And a lot of small cars!

  • Mazda Astina

  • What car(s) do the pop-up headlights, steering wheel and tail lights shown in this video belong to?

  • @wststreet2 I think it was the toyota MR2 or a Supra . not two positive but thats my guess

  • @Foxx158 Thanks :)

  • @wststreet2: All the exterior shots of a black car are a Toyota Supra A70 series (1986-1993)

  • @ZilogJones Thanks

  • Wich episode and season is this? Wanna see the Kadett rally thing

  • This is pure gold, those bitches who are saying that this looks like shit should die in shit. If they are really top gear fans then they should appreciate this.

  • OH MY GOD!!! hahahhaa that's hilarious!!!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Ha! So 80's! Gotta love!

  • this is REALLY 80`s. :D

  • I still wonder why they picked Jessica...

  • @Mrster It does seem like a slightly random choice, doesn't it?

  • @Ghostwitch

    You bet.

  • @Mrster Because it is a classic, just like old cars! And it's a classic to listen to even while driving old cars!

  • could someone give me the title of the beautiful song that i heard when these three wonderful men crossed through the norway brigde??do u rememebr that episode???please help me

  • this is the best in automobile yeah james, jeremy y hammond

  • that astra was at my beach at the anual sandocross event where i do a spot of saftey marshalling WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • this is before top gear have a studio

  • lol now they are showing old episodes from topgear on tv there are littly only like 5 people in the audiance, now there are hunderds and the old episodes are so boring without james may lol

  • on tonight's programme.....

  • Did they ever review a toyota supra mk3?

  • a litre of fuel in 1989 was only 4p : (

  • 50 mini years now xD

  • Also I don't take TG too seriously in it's reviews because it's more of an entertainment programme. Clarkson, May and Hammond on their special challenges (the Arcticm Naam etc) are by far the biggest reason I watch the show anyway. If you want more factual reviews and a more serious programme, Fifth Gear is that way ----->

  • Do you have an episode on BMW e30? like the 325is model?

  • Yea

ewaf88, todays TG is actually fun to watch.

  • Today show is way better then that crappy one Noels Emdond Presented

  • @klippy12345 Sure. Agree. Edmonds was seriously lame behind a wheel. But Clarkson is not a car person - he is an entertainer. He's a knob too - could you seriously ask a permed stick insect, with a gut, for motor advice.!!!

  • From the time they actually used to test drive cars that ordinary people could afford and wanted information about. A far cry from today's show.

  • leading to it losing viewer figures and being cancelled

  • is was nice for those times

  • wow it looks soo boring,

    kinda like fifth gear :x

  • lol

  • ha ha nice!

they cut out some of it tho so it did not look so good

  • boy was top gear DULL in those days?

  • OH MY GOD THEY GOT MINIS I GOT TO WATCH THIS. Seriously, I love Minis.

  • im surprised top gear uses the allman brothers as their theme song. from what i hear, british people don't even know they exist!

  • You think, perhaps, in the late 70s, when Top Gear started, and this song was still fairly recent, maybe they did? It's called "tradition," something Americans would know nothing about.

  • what the fuck are you talking about? if you know anything about america at all, you would know that we are far from being non-traditional. far from it... jeremy clarkson isn't an expert on american culture you know... you should be smarter than that.

  • coolerdude is right - they are "traditional" its just that their traditions are different from us Brits.

I suggest you look at the "paint offensive messages on the side of the cars" challenge in the american special! They certainly wouldn't get that sort of treatment in the UK!!!

  • hmm no, but you guys aren't the most civilized people either. i read recently that the uk is now one of the most anti-semitic countries in europe, and that synnagogues are being burned down over there... that certainly doesn't happen here.

  • Yes, the UK is one of the most anti-semitic countries in Europe but we don't usually show any hate to those who are religious - we just ignore them and leave them to their ways.

Synagogues being burned down? I suspect that is a pile of crap as I've never heard of that - and knowing the left-wing anti-racist bias of the British media (and I am anti-racist too) they would have reported that to death - not a single word of it has been mentioned as far as I know.

  • Had they driven through San Francisco with those sayings, they would likely have gotten a standing ovation. They were in the 'deep' south, where 'traditions' are more rooted in religion. They knew that the slogans would get attention, I just think they under-estimated just how 'traditional' the southern US is.

  • well they were in the deep south part of the US... when I told my friends that they said Nascar sucks they asked me if they made it out alive. (the south acts a bit different then the rest of the US) I would recommend they stop asking for trouble to try to get up there already high ratings in the show

  • nah i love jeremy clarkson and i think he makes or breaks the show, but i hate it when people take him too seriously.

  • yeah I guess your right, but its really hard not to take him seriously, I guess its because its gives serious reviews on cars and ect.

  • um he thinks americans are fat pigs whos cars are crap what the hell are you on about lol

  • LOL!

  • Mini 50 years this year

  • I've got that episode. You can buy those mazdas for about a hundred quid these days. They say they cost £15000 back then.

  • The theme tune is different: It puts me in mind of a couple of chilled-out cowboys reviewing old hilly-billy-mobiles!

  • Wow, it's sort of freaky to see that this show used to be a laid-back, straightforward review show, not the nutty, what-crazy-things-can-we-do-with-cars-next program it is now.

  • "Hello, im William Woolard!"

  • ah jesica allman bros

  • the first car, the red mazda 323(which was actually a 323f), my mum had a grey one

  • I hope all the idiots who are saying this looks rubbish realise that in 20 years time the current TG intro is gonna look pretty rubbish too

  • @greenscout Perhaps, but nothing will top the current presenters. Nothing. Ever.

  • @greenscout there will be no more motor car show is gonna be btr than the current one just like there will be no more car as fast as the veyron

  • read his comment again. He is talking about the INTRO, not the show itself. And I agree with him, in 20 years time the current TG intro will look dated. And then the kids will be saying how rubbish it looks, just like the kids of today diss this

  • @greenscout in all fairness it may look extremely different as there won't be the same presenters, as they'd be too old or dead.

  • This is a million times better then the current one they use

  • Then I suggest you look at the April 1999 one. i thought it would be an innocent opening title sequence but the sheer brilliance of it and the electric guitar theme tune totally blew me away!!!

  • I think you've misunderstood my point. A lot of these kids think this is crap simply because it doesn't look as good as todays one, without realising that the same is gonna be said of todays sub-standard one in 20 years time. Actually, todays one won't even be remembered, it's that forgetable, whereas this and the 90's one will be.

FYI the 90s one is my fave TG intro

  • Yeah. These ones may not look as good as the modern one but have FAR more imagination gone into them.

and there were several in the 90s (including a re-working of this one), so which 90s one do you mean?

  • The ones during the late 90's, with the heavy guitar remix, they were about a million times better then the current whiney one they use now.

Heck, even the original Fifth Gear theme was better then the current music for TG.

  • gee man its not that bad.... it looks good, the music hasnt changed that much..

  • Not sure what you're talking about dude, I really like this one

  • Retro :D!

  • the voiceover sounds like trevor macdonald

  • these titles are rubish compared 2 the modern 1s

  • maybe but consider that technology has moved on since 1989. This was the best they could do back then so it's not fair to compare it to the modern one.

  • The modern one is rubbish, only kids like it

  • Top Gear was a great show back then with the legendary William Woolard. When Jeemy came in though he took the show to another level with his funny reviews. Motoring companies were scared that he would give their cars bad reviews. Now Top Gear is more of an entertainment show they don't look at everyday cars as much.

  • the original is only better, but i believe it was not so funny as now with jeremy :p

  • wheres jermey :'(

  • well jeremy actually started on TG in 1989 so this might actually be just before his time.

  • *April 1988, although he wasn't a regular presenter till sometime in 1989

  • all remixes suck. Jessica is the best song when left untouched.

  • The next version (late 90s/early 2000s - faster electric guitar version) was brilliant as well. then it went crap in 2002.

  • Totally agree, the late 90's may well have been my fave version

  • I like it when they kept things original!

  • I bet the stig was in school by then...Lol

  • The graphics and stuff were very good for 1989

  • Tacky as hell looking back at it now but you gotta love it.

  • these opening titles r class

  • where can i watch full episodes of classic top gear?

  • lol...in an age were computer graphics were amazing, so they used them everywhere!

  • POWER!!! who was in the orignal epsoides becuase i only started waacthing them in about 2002

  • Go on the top gear (original format) wikipedia page. its got a comprehensive list on there

  • It's mint having a top gear video on your profile. I uploaded to ancient clips and before you know it I had 100000 hits! Really! Amazing!

  • apart from jez, soz

  • i thought dat topgear started wen jerremy richard and james started. cus it was series 1 wen dey wer on?

  • nope. Top Gear started in 1977 on BBC2 Midlands only and then went nationwide the next year. Jeremy Clarkson joined the series in 1989 left the original in 1999 and James May took his place. The series was axed in 2000 and then re-launched in 2001 with a brand new look and with jeremy clarkson and newcomer Richard Hammond and this fat bloke who name I don't remember. James then took the fat bloke's place for new Top Gear. series 2.

  • Jason Dawes from 'Used Car Roadshow' fame.

    M.

  • Oh, lol. The fat bloke was Jason Dawe.

  • omg! it looked hoible back then! the song sounds easyer to play on the guitar though.

  • Jessica - Allman Brothers

  • ur vid is broken!

  • ur mom is broken

  • Bit of audio wow at the start! :)

  • Ahh those dulcett tones of William Woollard....

  • Fantastic intro! Love Top Gear, but the new intro is better!

  • astra GTE raw!

  • good quality i have to say!

  • wtf its just an intro of an old top gear intro... yeah its my fav programme ever but come on this is youtube!
