Those are not colonies, they are voluntary territories - some are waiting to fulfill the requirements to become states (eg. Puerto Rico) - others are undecided.

Having lived, taught, and travelled extensively in eastern Europe for many years, I can tell you that the PEOPLE of those countries that already belong to NATO are quite happy about it, as they believe it will give them security from the kinds of atrocities committed by the Russian government during communist times. At least a couple of generations will have to pass before Russia is even capable of gaining ground in its former satellite states.
