Did you try to USE your weapon and to NOT fall in the pit. This help a lot.
In fact, probably one of the best game on the NES. The only bad side was the total lack of savegame. But with an emulator, is not a problem anymore.

the arcade version is good and you get 3 life per credit. so basicly the nes version is a harder version of an aracade game that you need to complete in 1 credit
