Once they were down 3 games to one against the Sixers (Wilt Chamberlin) and they came back to win in Philly, in Boston, and then again in Philly to win the Eastern Division, then went on to beat the Lakers (Jerry West, Elgin Baylor) to the the NBA Championship. Being a Laker fan I don't like the Celtics as an organization but I have the utmost respect for their players. Especially Bill Russell. Bill Russell isn't just a legend, he's a prophet. The Celts are en route to #2 with Garnett and it takes moments like this to show us how important tradition, history and pride are in this game. We don't see it enough in the modern NBA.

If I were Russell's kids, I'd be pretty upset that he's as proud of KG of them. that was KG's first year as a celtic, He tied up the kids pretty quickly

I get goose bumps everytime I see this video. To know our history and that a classy guy like Mr. Russell played for the Celtics makes me proud to be a Celtic fan. Unbelievable pride. Those banners represent players like KG and Bill Russell. Banner 18 coming soon.

Bill Russell, the greatest. Once they were down 3 games to one against the Sixers (Wilt Chamberlin) and they came back to win in Philly, in Boston, and then again in Philly to win the Eastern Division, then went on to beat the Lakers (Jerry West, Elgin Baylor) to the the NBA Championship. Russell made his teams great.

Being a Laker fan I don't like the Celtics as an organization but I have the utmost respect for their players. Especially Bill Russell. It's a shame that his name isn't mentioned in the "best player ever" discussions. The ultimate goal in any sport is to win and Russell did that better than any athlete in history. 1 of the greatest leaders of all-time & the greatest defensive player the game has ever seen.

Bill Russel is a great, wise man. Understanding KG's capibility and what hes done. And him saying he would share a championship with him is the most emotional interview ive seen. When Bill Russel talks it makes u fell aprreciative to just hear this man speak. Hes like the Morgan Freeman of Basketball. The Biggest amount of respect goes to this man...for his wisdom and the love he has for the game and the player who enjoy it....Respect greateness. Definately gave me the chills...

It's just so annoying to see in 2008 when Kevin Garnett say, " I know what it means to be a Celtic."
After playing with that franchise with ONE year. Obviously Paul Pierce had been horrible over there over his 10 year tenure in the league. And then Ray Allen and KG come in and Celtic fans are like Paul Pierce is the best. No, fuck that nonsense. KG was much better in Minnissota, where he won his first MVP award. Now he's a Celtic, talking shit. No disrespect to him, but he is just stupid.

I would be willing to bet that KGs biggest regret is that he couldn't win one with the Timberwolves.
These reflective "private" conversations are kind of weak to me. They know they have to say something in front of the camera. What a moment they shared (in front of the camera).
Although I do like the moment with Russell and Duncan were Bill tells Tim about Jackie Robinson's funeral and how Tim is his favorite athlete. Regardless of whether it's true or not.

Ok. Shows what you know. Imagine winning 11 NBA titles for a team and having people show up to the games shouting "Spearchucker!" and "Look at that jungle bunny jump!" and "Stupid nigger!"
How would you feel? He is no longer a racist man, and part of the reason he left the celtics at all was because of his strange relationship with the city of Boston, which to this day remains one of the most notoriously racist northern cities in the country.

The book "Dynasty's End" talks about the last championship in the Russell era. It talks about the lack of support Boston gave to the Celtics (which was due to the Celtics being "too black"). After reading the book you get the sense that Russell enjoyed playing on the road more than at the Garden considering all the racist chants (as you note) he received.
