  • I´ve explained to you in detail in my first reply to you.

You claimed, that the V2 was shot at the bridge, because Hitler "was getting angry" as the Americans captured the bridge.

The real reason wasn´t, because "Hitler was getting angry" or "mad".

The Rockets were shot at the bridge to interrupt the stream of military equipment and soldiers that was brought over the Rhine by the Americans.

The rockets weren´t shot at the bridge because "Hitler was getting mad" or "angry".

  • Hi, Terrancejohn!

I knew, that you meant that Hitler went angry.

And again: This wasn´t the reason for shooting V2 rockets at this bridge.

    Greetings

  • @terrancejohn

Sorry, but the reason why V2 were fired at the bridge after falling into the hands of the Americans wasn´t because "Hitler went mad". :-))

It was attempted by frogmen, by Me262 and Arado jet bombers and V2 Rockets to blow this bridge up, because the Americans were transporting their troops and weapons over it.

The German army tried to interrupt this only possibility for the Americans to get more men and weapons in the first bridgehead on the "German" side of the Rhine.

  • The reason for firing the V2s was to destroy the bridge - not because Hitler went mad, as he frequently did. Mind you, he was not very pleased about the loss of the bridge.

  • That is right. It was the only tactical use of a V2 and one came to within 300 metres of the bridge - quite an achievement for the time.

  • Why didn't they re-build it after the war?

  • Because the railway line was never completed and did not go anywhere. It was a bridge to nowhere.

  • @alanheath

Sorry, but that is wrong. The Bridge WAS completed at the end of WWI and connected the left and the right railwaylines of the Rhine. The purpose was a purely strategic one. There was railway traffic and street traffic on this bridge, but never enought to rebuild this bridge after it´s destruction after WWII. The strategic purpose didn´t existed anymore after WWII and the bridge was more or less useless.

  • What is wrong? The purpose of the bridge was to allow military supplies to be sent more quickly to the western front avoiding built up areas. As this requirement ceased to exist after 1945 the bridge was not rebuilt.

  • @alanheath

You claimed above, that the railway line was NEVER COMPLETED.

    That is wrong.

  • I wrote that the line between Neuss and Remagen was not completed during the war and construction discontinued after 1918. Is this incorrect?

  • On straightforward logic and without consulting a railway map - I am at work now - I think you are right.

  • @innit27

Because the bridge was build mainly for strategic railway purposes....and those strategic purposes didn´t existed anymore after WWII.

  • Is this filmed inside the Friedensmuseum??

  • Yes - which reminds me I need to write this in the text!!
