@dazwalkingman It's called a StickPic... an awesome piece of equipment for sure! I have a video on my channel showing how to make a homemade version for about a dollar if that helps too....
I hope you have a license for all that fishin'. I wish I could pack that light but here in the Cherokee National Forest the rain is way to unpredictable to count on having a fire for food!
Hey This Vid is great want to see more like it , my fav part is the part with the fishing :) i do aa bit of fishing myself dn was wondering what rod is that?
@steintanz Thanks for joining me on this trip once more buddy :-) These are good memories for sure... can't wait until the weather warms up and I can do this again! :-)
Nice, I'll have to check out more of these. I'm headed off to the Springer Mt. come spring time, I'm a big proponent of ultra light and relatively high mileage days. Keep up the good work!
Nice vid, so I take it that it's a good idea to bring a pair of sandels along with our hiking shoes for summer hiking, I would have never thought of that!
What you really need Exactly....... ^6 knives and 5 ways to start fires....Most of us over pack over plan and over prepare..... Its the boy scout in all of us...LOL Great vid THX
I have a couple of questions.....what about the creepy crawlies in choosing a tent setup like yours ???And what kind of protection you use against bears...do you advise carrying a pepper spray can???
@barty1982 Thanks my friend, I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it!
"Creepy crawlies" weren't a problem at all... just have to be a little more careful when selecting your campsite (like not on an anthill or something, lol). I haven't had a problem with bears at all... the few that I've been fortunate to see have ran off the second they knew I was around. Pepper spray is definitely a good choice if you're concerned about bears (or big cats) though! Best protection is just to keep a clean camp.
@hillbillybushcraft Well, I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it a sleeping pad, lol. It was actually a windshield sun protector for a vehicle.... works great for keeping you warm, but it isn't the best for comfort!
Hey matey great vid I like your gear and have been making things lighter myself just within the last few months and boy is it a great thing. I have more energy now . Great vids keep them coming
Great vid. My buddy Jon likes to go lightweight and makes a lot of his own gear. He is in a lot of our vids demonstrating stuff. I like the ingenuity in your system
Hey... 20lbs for a multi-day isn't bad at all! I just saw your new unboxing vid by the way (great stuff!), those new packs should go a looong way to reducing weight, eh? :-)
Hey just wanted to say your pretty much my hero. Haven't commented on any of your videos cuz I was just a newb at all this stuff. But having watched a lot of your stuff I've been inspired to reduce my gear as well. I've gone from a 30 lb set up down to a 15 lb set up that I just hiked 2 days with last week. And proud to say that next week I'll be taking on the black forest trail with a base weight if 5.5 lb! Thanks for all the great videos and ideas. Wish I could make some of the stuff you make
@TheOutdoorBasics Thanks for the very kind words Brother! I'm glad to hear that you've gotten something out of some of this stuff. It sounds like you've really got an excellent gear system going on... not too many people can cut down on weight that much. Would love to hear about your 5lb setup! Hope you have a great time on your upcoming trip my friend. Thanks again for the great comment!
@mikepoop1 I know huh! His stuff rocks, and he's a damn good guy to boot! As far as the shirts: I think he sells them... I'm sure if you send him a message, he'll let you know how to get one :-)
@cudacade It sure is! I'm hoping to get back up there this week for a couple of days and take a different route... maybe even catch a few trout this time ;-) Thanks for coming along man!
@tahoeric Thanks my friend! And thanks for coming along :-)
As far as the fishing: I was spending to much time playing around with recording myself fishing instead of actually fishing lol! At least that's my excuse this time ;-)
That was a great trip, IA. Just curious, what was the final weight on that setup? I have been interested in doing the same thing and enjoyed your sewing video for the sleeping bag mod. I wonder what I can get down to for a minimal trip like that but am running out of time for our season here. Looks like I will have a project to work on in the winter! Always great videos, thanks.
@Loraxtribe Thanks my friend! It was an awesome trip! My final load out weight with food and water was just over 7 1/2 pounds... I didn't have to carry much water luckily since there were only short stretches that weren't near a stream. It has been alot of fun putting together this setup. I agree with you, it will make a great project for the winter... in fact, alot of the gear that I utilized for this was either made last winter or thought out then. Can't wait to hear what you come up with!
That was great John. You know you could survive with just a knife and your hair. all that cordage and fly tying material sticking out of your hat lol Not making fun brother OBTW Great Shirt from a great Guy Matt s channel rocks
@medicjimr LOL!!! I never thought of that before! I should do a hippie survival video haha. Could make some fishing line outa my hair and then use one of those "hair flies" ;-)
Thanks for taking the time to watch Jim, I really appreciate it... I know how busy you've been lately buddy. Best to ya!
@Cragdwella Thanks Craig! I didn't want it to end either LOL. It was so nice to be out there... wish the fish would have been more cooperative, but oh well. Peace my Brother!
That looked like too much fun John, Hope that bag of yours worked well. It didnt look like it had a draw string on it. Did you loose much heat out of it ? Great vid as always.......That is a good lookin shirt.
@DAYWALKERTWO Thanks Todd... it was a blast! The bag did surprisingly well. I thought about adding a drawstring when I was throwing it together, but since I never use them on my other bags I figured why bother. I did notice some heat loss a one point during the night, but I think that was because I didn't fluff up the bag very well prior to going to bed. All in all, it's done pretty good on the last couple trips out. I'm curious how it's going to do as the temps start to drop soon. Best to ya!
john, wasn't that a panther martin? I used one of those in silverwood and was pulling in trout, crappie and bass all in the same area. a yellow with red dots. same size, no feathers at hook. Great little lures. great vid. looked like fun. how far is that from your neck of the woods?
@PHARRAOH Good catch Bro! That was a Martin... I typically use a black and silver Mepps for stream fishing, so it must have been stuck on the brain lol. I didn't have one in the "tackle box" this time out, so I was kind of bummed. The area that I went to was just under 2 hours from home. There are some decent places alot closer, but I had been wanting to get back to this area since last year so I didn't mind the extra drive. Thanks Alan!
Styling, light weight, great food, awesome views and fishing - you're on top of your game John! My newest Favorite - thanks for sharing this very fine overnight!
@wawhiker Thanks buddy! Sure was nice to be up in the woods again... the deserts great, but the mountains are the place to be in the summer! Wish the fishing would have been better, but oh well. It's been kind of a weird year... I've been up several times this year and the streams have been blown out by runoff way later than usual. Might make for some good late summer/early fall fishin' though. And the Kokanee will be starting to run next month too :-)
Your welcome Brother! Great video John! Man, its sweet to be able to get all your basic gear down to a 5 lb setup. Your cooking setup nests together real nice! I agree withyou on the focus on enjoying where you at vs having the top line gear. Sleeping under the stars style of backpacking is a great experience that everyone should try once. That wilderness area that you are hiking there is gerogeous. Sweet evening/morning vid capture. You be stylin in that shirt there too my Brother! Thumbs Up!
@CrazyTaileZ Thanks Matt! It sure was a good time... just wish I coulda stayed longer though! I gotta tell ya, it didn't really even feel like backpacking... was more just a walk in the woods with a little sleeping thrown in lol. I agree 100% with you, there's nothin' like sleeping under the stars man. I remember doing that as a kid all the time... somewhere along the line more and more gear just started following me around lol. Thanks again for everything Brother! You rock man!
That was awesome buddy :o) You made me feel like I was there with ya :o) Except I'd be hanging beside ya :o) If I slept like that you'd have to help me up in the morning...hehe! Nice catch there. What a beauty spot too stop buddy :o) "LIKE"
@Ggreenvideos Thanks Rich, it was good to have ya along Brother! Smart call on choosing the air over the ground... there's not much I can say in support of sleeping with a rock jammed into your spleen! Next time I'm bringing a better sleeping pad... I think the ground is getting harder as the years go by! ;-0
@intenseangler Haha! I think the Thermarest NeoAir is about 14 oz. ;o) not insulated :o) cascadedesigns(dot)com We don't want rocked spleens...hehe ;o)
Nice video John. As I told the other Idaho John (rainbowhiker), I just can’t get into the desert environment. I like the trees! Wonder how many Powerade bottles are recycled by backpackers? That’s my preferred bottle also. “I know it’s not me cause I’m quit the fisherman” :-)) Loved it. That line reminded me of the Jeremiah Johnson “Yes” Language instruction scene. “Great hunter”.. Yes, “Fine figure of a man”…Yes, “That is all you need to know.. for now” :-)) Enjoyed the outing John…
@Woodenarrows LOL!! I love this comment buddy! One of the best movies ever! "Skin that one, pilgrim, and I'll get you another!" Haha!
Thanks for coming along Jim! I tell ya one thing the desert's good for... making you appreciate the woods more hehe. It was just gorgeous up there! It's pretty tough to beat those Powerade bottles isn't it? I look at my old Nalgene's once in awhile and just shake my head lol. Thanks again Jim :-)
Hi John, Awesome video my friend! You debuted your ultra-lite hip pack kit in grand fashion. Absolutely beautiful country! A very nice little camp set up next to a pretty little stream, some great angling entertainment, and you didn't even have to crease your cool shirt with pesky sweaty pack straps. Plus, the pizza too! : ) Your thoughtful words and images on enjoying the the splendor of nature safely and simply without the newest greatest gadgets is refreshing and inspiring... : )
@saradreaming Thanks Sara! It sure was a fun (and beautiful!) trip. Maybe it was just the contrast of the forest in comparison to my last desert hike, but the woods seemed even more stunning and alive than usual. And it was oh so nice not to have a pack on my back! It really did feel like just a stroll... with the bonus of getting to spend the night :-) Don't get me wrong, I like my gear as much as the next person... it's just nice to get back to what it's really about once in awhile, ya know?
... but you won't reduce the weight of the camera, right! ;o)
Nice trip and yes UL is amazing - I'm also getting into it more and more. Your thermal mat looks terribly thin, but probably ok for summer time over there.
Wow! Now I feel challenged to go even lighter. Very nice John. Looks like really great country to hike. Your fishin' kit looks perfect for a variety of styles, too. I wonder if you'll do a complete rundown on all your gear for this trip? I'm always amazed at how little we actually need out there and this puts those ideas into reality. I think this is the first sub-ultralight, 'on the trail', video I've seen on you tube. Thanks for showing the way, again. Best to ya.
@rainbowhiker Thank you very much John! It was certainly a beautiful trip... and much different country than the last! It was nice to be in the woods, and to be near a gorgeous mountain stream. I try to tailor my fishing gear to where I'm going, so that helps alot. I agree with you 100%, we don't need nearly as much as we think. I didn't want for anything this trip (well, maybe a sleeping pad lol). Your ideas & support really helped me put this kit together btw. And yup, a reviews coming :-)
SW Packbacker shirt rocks! Nice, your not kidding that is ultralight. That's the idea! nature is free! Love trail pizza, Crocket20 was able to find a pizza tree did you?!?! Great adventure and fishing, how long was the hike in?
@ihikearoundcom I know huh! That's my new lucky hiking shirt now lol. I was surprised at how well this setup worked the first time out. There are some minor adjustments that need to be made (most importantly a sleeping pad!), but all in all it was great. To be honest, it didn't really even feel like backpacking lol. A pizza tree huh? I must have missed that... now I'm gonna be digging through his vids for that one lol. The hike in was short, only a couple miles. Thanks and take care my friend!
What a wonderful video! I love the Boise National Forest. Was up there almost a month ago. Never backpacked...yet...someday though :) Super light would be the way for me to go, since I don't wish to carry more weight on me than I have to. Loved the way you showed us how you set up your campsite! Love coffee in the am, too!!! Thanks forsharing! Really enjoyed this :)
@IdahoJourneys Thank you so much... I'm really glad that you enjoyed coming along on my little adventure!
I agree with you, the forest up there is just amazingly gorgeous! We're so fortunate to live so close to it aren't we? When you do decide to go on your first backpacking trip, I must say that lightweight is the way to go. It's so nice just to amble through the woods without the weight of a heavy pack. You'll have to record your first time out... those are always the most memorable! :-)
nice trip and area. you know cheese will last at least a week as long as you dont touch it with your hands. i take cheese out all the time and no problems. usually medium block of cheddar.
@g0vqw Thanks Sandy! I wouldn't have thought it was possible either at first... I'm a believer now though! I tell ya, it was such a great feeling to be walking without a huge weight on my back. I usually go pretty light anyway, but this was incredibly different. It was just like taking a leisurely stroll through the woods :-)
@jjsandersheli I know exactly what you mean Bro! If you ask me, the hardest part of lightening your pack is trying to force yourself to leave things behind. Even when putting this kit together, I kept wanting to throw more and more into it lol.
Very inspiring... but a little too light for me ;) . What was your rod set-up?, telescoping, 3 piece etc?

What a beauty spot too stop buddy :o) "LIKE"
Ggreenvideos 6 months ago
@Ggreenvideos Thanks Rich, it was good to have ya along Brother! Smart call on choosing the air over the ground... there's not much I can say in support of sleeping with a rock jammed into your spleen! Next time I'm bringing a better sleeping pad... I think the ground is getting harder as the years go by! ;-0
intenseangler 6 months ago
@intenseangler Haha! I think the Thermarest NeoAir is about 14 oz. ;o) not insulated :o) cascadedesigns(dot)com We don't want rocked spleens...hehe ;o)

BTW, I kind of feel guilty now for having a 2-1/2# tent :-))

@Woodenarrows You won't feel nearly as guilty when it's pouring rain and the wind starts blowing! ;-)

Woodenarrows 6 months ago

saradreaming 6 months ago
@saradreaming Thanks Sara! It sure was a fun (and beautiful!) trip. Maybe it was just the contrast of the forest in comparison to my last desert hike, but the woods seemed even more stunning and alive than usual. And it was oh so nice not to have a pack on my back! It really did feel like just a stroll... with the bonus of getting to spend the night :-) Don't get me wrong, I like my gear as much as the next person... it's just nice to get back to what it's really about once in awhile, ya know?
intenseangler 6 months ago
... but you won't reduce the weight of the camera, right! ;o)
Nice trip and yes UL is amazing - I'm also getting into it more and more. Your thermal mat looks terribly thin, but probably ok for summer time over there.
Greetings, Tim
steintanz 6 months ago
@steintanz You mean the camera counts? I thought it was just this thing that likes to follow me everywhere I go now ;-0
I agree, my mat is VERY thin! It works great for keeping the cold away, but it isn't much for comfort! Thanks for coming along for the trip buddy :-)

Best to ya.
rainbowhiker 6 months ago

Great adventure and fishing, how long was the hike in?
ihikearoundcom 6 months ago

IdahoJourneys 6 months ago

FixedByDoc 6 months ago
@FixedByDoc Thanks for the tip Doc. I've usually avoided taking cheese in the past, but had to have it for the pizza ;-)
intenseangler 6 months ago
@intenseangler same here but after wife did it for wea i learned some about it. the harder the cheese the longer it lasts.

John,
This is really good.I didn't think it was possible to get your pack weight so low!
I think ultra light is the way to go.
You have inspired me to give it a try.
All the best
Sandy
g0vqw 6 months ago
@g0vqw Thanks Sandy! I wouldn't have thought it was possible either at first... I'm a believer now though! I tell ya, it was such a great feeling to be walking without a huge weight on my back. I usually go pretty light anyway, but this was incredibly different. It was just like taking a leisurely stroll through the woods :-)
Best regards to you and yours my friend!
intenseangler 6 months ago
That is what I call light backpacking :)
AbenteuerWeltreise 6 months ago
@AbenteuerWeltreise Yeah, it was definitely nice not having to carry a huge pack up and down the mountains :-)
intenseangler 6 months ago
I always carry everything just short of the kitchen sink. i need to do more light weight back packing.
jjsandersheli 6 months ago
@jjsandersheli I know exactly what you mean Bro! If you ask me, the hardest part of lightening your pack is trying to force yourself to leave things behind. Even when putting this kit together, I kept wanting to throw more and more into it lol.
