The dead horse scene was real-they were actually carving up the dead horse for food-Rosselloni saw this happening in real time, & had the kid enter the incident while Rossellini filmed; the ppl & the coppers were not actors, they were real, & were really waiting for some meat...
Sad to say that in the UK at this time, it was not much better. As a kid, I remember being in rags and permanently hungry from 1945 to 1951 at least . All we had were meager ration books and little else. Thank God for the EU and no more wars in Europe
@mrjimhoward I also remember, in Italy rubble and people went crazy for American bombing. The English, I explained to my mother, were loyal and did not affect civilians. No more war among Europeans.
@IntoTheShade I believe it's an allusion to the French Revolution, where after the execution of King Louis XVI the newly formed republic created a French revolutionary calendar. The first year under the rule of the republic was declared Year 0.
@SLACKER614 everyone had their fair share, yes, the greatest thing this film could offer is the acumen of a different perspective, and the importance of the acknowledgment of multi-narritives in the review of history.

The Reichstag looked so impressive. I love the cold beauty of Berlin.

What a title for a movie... "Germany, year 0", couldn't choose any better

@fjdmusicman this was quite normal. starvation is a spur. canabilism was quite common in situations of this kind.
