I did a really big research paper on this subject and my theory is that rebels in South Ossetia fired on Georgian soldiers and Georgia overreacted and used it as an excuse to take out the rebels. The Russians then used this as an excuse to make an example of Georgia. Both sides overreacted. Russia uses the Ossetians as pawns and gives them all Russian citizenship so if any of them are killed, Russia has a legitimate reason to declare war on Georgia.

@Ghouma Could not agree more with the author of the video and his response.. What I would add is that in early 90s ethnic Georgians were either killed or evicted from their houses in Abkhazia and S. Ossetia (and not only Georgians). Abkhazians comprised only 20 percent of the whole population, while Georgians were majority--which is obvious, it is and was a Georgian territory. So, let's take all those people back to Abkhazia and SO and then have a referendum. Let's see what happens. :)
