I don't care what anyone else has to say, 5/5 all the way. I know she's not the best in this clip but she's an amazing and talented artist! Watch her in The Passion of Bel Canto here on YouTube and you'll understand!
June Anderson was a great singer but the Sutherland comparisons didn't always work. Her Violetta has too much vibrato and is too big and clumsy, with no delicacy and expressive acting. Anna Moffo is far superior as Violetta. June sings a great Lucia & Konstanza and her bel canto was always terrific but she had no Verdi training, and as such she can't sing Violetta.
still a very good soprano but a far cry from the "new sutherland" as she was hailed when I saw her in the 80's, proves that all the time the sutherland, caballe and all spent in repertoire befotre they hit the big time were not just bad luck, but strengthened their technique to make them the enduring stars they have been
The singer with one of best legato and technique ever! And her vibrato is the right one with the right flow...not too fast vibrato like MM or EM or too slow vibrato ( wobble ) like some that i cant mention here...
Oh please... all of you SHUT THE FUCK UP and try even in your best days to sing this way. Most of you just a buch of FRUSTRATED singers that haven´t done a shit or maybe a little but have there mouths ready to criticized what you CAN´T DO BETTER!!!
Please don't base your impression of June Anderson's singing from this clip. She experienced a vocal decline after 1996, which unfortunately happens to many bigger voiced coloraturas. Check out the same piece in the clip from the 1990 New Year's gala on Youtube. That's June at her height, and you can base your opinion more accurately that way.
While it's not her best, she was not all that past her prime. I saw her around 2002 at the Met and it was pretty damned hot (certainly better than this) 3/3
Her high notes sound too shrill, thin, and pinched, especially the E flat. Yikes...she really looked like she had to work hard to breath into it. You can see all the veins in her neck pop.
She appears to be directing traffic throughout the aria..and is anyone conducting?? Verdi ruined. Absolutely ridiculous show-off singing..very poor characterization indeed. Sorry June..this is grim!
What a shame...early on she looked like she might develop into something of a successor to Sutherland.Good instrument, similar roles.Never happened...but this is a difficult scene for ANYbody...good job,I think.
Scooped, pinched, flaccid and imprecise. The orchestra is almost nothing, fortunately, or nothing but her shrillness would come across the footlights. Notice the extra breath before that ill-advised e-flat.
Technically, I think she's quite good. The coloratura doesn't sound very effortless and thrilling and somehow the melody doesn't flow as it should. Anderson certainly sang this aria much better in other occasions, as in 2000 she was already in decline in some of her coloratura roles (she continued wonderful, however, in some heavier lyric roles, like Daphne). The fioritura is quite accurate and agile, albeit not as steady as before. The characterization, frankly, is a little dull. 3.75/2
I agree, she continued in lyric roles and was very much better. Here, she struggles a bit, and the conductor has to make adjustments for her struggles.
Few sopranos can pull this role off, at least vocally, late in the career. Sutherland was an exception, although never a convincing actress even in her prime.
According to Anderson's own performance standards, she is not so good here, especially the almost painful high notes. But overall not that bad in comparison to some of the others, and her characterization is convincing. 4/4.5
June was past her best here in 2000 that is for sure. back in the day she could rival Sutherland in this aria. Overall she is dry here, and the highest notes seem pinched. 4/5
she sounds shrill and strained sry... 2/3

Three and a half stars? LOL! In the balcony or the first row, listening to June Anderson is like being in ecstacy.

Her voice is in decline here. Some of those high Cs are difficult for her not to mention the two high Dflates. I'm surprised she sang the high Eflat.
Nevertheless, I still like her. She's a great artist and musican

Quite uncomfortable to listen to. Fine acting, though.

June's vibrato is unique in that it stays at a constant speed throughout the voice, unlike most voices. She sounds fantastic here.

Poor June. Listen to her stuff from the early 90s. It's brilliant. No wobble, no forcing. I promise.
latraviata1853 3 years ago
she does have a tendancy to force her high notes, and her vibrato on high stuff often gets really, really slow

I would have "entered" on June's behalf the rendition available on youtube from her Paris concert 1987. That one is tough to beat IMHO.

Agreed, too much arm waving. The high notes, when note scooped to were thin and stretched. 3/2
