  • In the part from about 14 to 22 seconds, are you muting the A string at all? When I play this part it seems like mine (A string) tends to resonate too loudly. Sometimes I let my little finger on my plucking hand lay on the A until I play it and then return it for situations like this. I know that's not the standard but its a method I come up with to help dampen unplayed strings. Just wondering what everyone else does? If anything....

  • Una persona es sorda y estúpida, AWESOME DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for a great video. I'm pretty sure I can make out all the notes just from watching you. No need to tab it out. Honestly, if a person can't follow this well captured video it's probably a bit beyond their capability just yet. Thanks again for a great post. Excellent playing.

  • very impressive, can you demonstrate it with a head cam instead, since i never see the bass in that view? I believe it would improve bass lessons and have a more natural approach for anyone trying to learn.

  • maple necks + pearl inlays = the shit

  • I love this bassline, but I can't play it. Too fast to my clumpsy fingers...

  • Haven't heard this probably since the early to mid 1980's. Never was sure who did it but knew I liked it! For some reason it got mixed up in my mind with Close Encounters... who knows why?

  • Yes!!! A great job!!! Very smooth!!

  • @reshea1950 revisiting Chuck Mangione today at work and loved this song. Thanks for throwing this up

  • Superb!!! Cant Say Enough!!!! Bravo!!!!!

  • Excellent, you nailed it! I just transposed the saxophone chart to fit lead guitar, interesting stuff. Hats off to Chuck, and to you!

  • i loved it! you put in work!! Good job!

  • you think u could notate this?

  • I told myself I would do that 2 years ago, guess I'll never get around to doing it as I already forgot how to play it.

  • @subersibo Still waiting for that remake. You owe it to yourself, and us, the fans.

  • @analyzingfunny Hmm, dunno if I'll ever get to it as I have been too busy learning so many tunes for upcoming gigs. I am in the process of forming a regular band and I'm thinking of having a sax and trumpet player. If it materializes, I will force them (LOL) to learn this song and then I will have to force myself to re-learn it.

  • sick!! Good job

  • good job mate

  • that bass is so sick. I can feel the fusion running through my veins

  • IMO: you gave it all you got!!

  • Great job!

  • After listining to this again. You really are missing a lot of detail. But, it is still good work. Not everyone can play everything note for note though.

  • Thanks for the comment, good observation. I recorded this right after learning it so I wouldn't forget but after listening to the track again I can hear stuff that I didn't hear then. It's always been the case w/ me.

  • Any chance we can you play the detailed version? That would be nice, maby a little louder too!

  • I've been wanting to re-learn this.I'll give it another listen but if I do post a vid,I'll just make it a slow version. No point doing the same thing.I think my fingerings are wrong also but close enough is good enough for me.I bet Jason Long,MarloweDK & a bunch of others can do it note-for-note.

  • Excellent work.

  • Excellent job . . . !!!!!

  • Charles Meeks (the original bassist) would be proud. Good Job.

  • this song is one of my top three favorites in the world

  • awesome ♥

  • Just listened to this again - I love it!!! awesome!!

  • Bravo...Nice feel on that Bass

  • Very good! Congrats! (Just one thing: It ends a little abruptly)

  • Wonderful, relaxed playing and indeed a beautiful song!

  • que buena interpretacion de este hombre

  • Oh, shut up, you asshole. This guy is doing something you could probably NEVER do.

  • Cool

  • Wicked bass. Very smooth.

  • Very smooth and controlled. I have played the Tenor sax part on this tune. I play bass to but wouldnt attempt this tune. Great job!!

  • youhit that on the nose great song

  • awesome!! F@#$ nice man!!

  • Very nice job dude...yo chuck's solo is so sickening lol

  • I just love it when a bass player plays against the root.

  • That's the good stuff. I love it.

  • YOU ROCK

  • Very nice tone. Not overplayed. Sexy. The way it was meant to be!

  • great stuff...flawless

  • Pure musical orgasm in my pants!)

  • omg! my school band played this at our concert! It wuz my favorte song we played! it wuz seriously hard to play but it wuz worth it! you sound so great playing that!

  • Great playing!! I love Charles Meeks. You nailed it!

  • Absolutely amazing, you really did a wonderful job. I cant compliment you enough on your talent.

  • Thanks, dude!

  • Is that Fender or Squier?

  • Hi, it is a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass, I sold it a few months back

  • why would you sell it?!

ive heard nothing but good things about that bass, what was wrong with it?

  • Nothing was wrong w/it. I never used the active mode so I settled for a passive 60's reissue.

  • dude, i swear, if they switched you with the real bass player at the concert, no one would know!

Thanks to your video, I learned the part I was having a little trouble with.

BTW, im 15 and thnx to ur vid, i can play this great song, prob one of the best bass lines i have heard!

  • Nice job, bro - Charles Meeks rocked it for Chuck back in the day. I wore this album out listening to James Bradley Jr on the drums. Bass lines aren't what they use to be anymore - 70's tore up the bass!!!!

  • Hi! really amazing! and really really grate. I'm a bass player begginer, and i know how difficult is play a piece like that and with this clarity. I'm really surprised. So, do u have a tab or partiture? can u send me that? I'l really really apreciatte. Thanks a lot!

  • Hi,thanks!I don't use tabs and my advise to you since you're just starting out is to figure out basslines without depending on tabs, invest in a phrase trainer like the KORG px4b or the Tascam bass trainer.Don't deprive yourself of the learning experience by relying on tablature.I learned to play by picking out simple basslines and figuring them out note-for-note, it's a lot of work but eventually you'll get better at it. .Good luck!

  • thats the best advice

  • I don't play any kind of instrument at all but I can still hear how amazingly you're playing. I've always loved bass, and this song. I'd give you more than five stars if I could!

  • Thanks for the kind words, glad you liked it.

  • I have seen this before. I am impressed. This is good stuff man! Well done and very accurate. I have a studio and try to tell people that some things, you just can't do in a studio that you can do live; it just doesn't tranlate well to tape for some odd reason, it's just a fact of tape recording, digital has limitations as well. The cool line at 2:02, didn't play well on the studio version. This is an exmple of that very thing. He does a great job.

  • wow!

i didn't even think someone else could play it that well!

    excellent vid! 5/5

  • You are good...im reminded of an old Billy Joel Lyric "Piano Man" "they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say man what are you doin' here?".... you need to be in much bigger places than this...you made my night. i just love a good bass

  • Bru, whoever you are...YOU ARE DEAD ON! I was a bass player in the band (Brass) and I think only a person who played bass could really appreciate what a good ear it takes to do what you just did...EXCELLENT!

  • Yet again, another amazing vid! 5 stars.

  • God, I love this song.

  • Great job! Dead on. Keep up the good work.

  • i know im going to sound annoying, but its actually a flugelhorn. but that is also why this song is so good. it strays away from the normal instrumentation

  • Great overlooked gem.. I just bought a vintage white MM5. It should completely contrast my Zon Sonus Custom 5 tenor, can't wait to play it !

  • That is superbly precise!

Of course, the main focus in Mangione's songs is the trumpet, but if you ask me, all other instruments are equally stars of the show because of how beautifully crafted they are.

  • Probably my fav too. This song is rad.

  • it rocks!

  • awesome!

  • I like CM.

  • Thanks for good work..

  • Nice and smooth.

  • nice - sounds great

  • Nice job and nice marcus miller bass too. I'm trying to learn this song on the bass and I can't find any tabs for it; so I'm just learning it by ear. How did you learn it?

  • Thanks. I learn most everything by ear. I have a KORG PX4b which has a phrase trainer so that really helps a lot, you can loop a phrase and slow it down.

  • I love bass.. tried learningg it but give up after 5 seconds

  • nice playing keep it up

  • sweet...nice song ...

  • Playing Chuck Mangione makes you cool. Playing this live with other musicians - even cooler. I know you probably don't know a trumpeter and a sax player but...

  • I did play with a sax player and trumpetist years ago

I'm not in a band right now so I just jam with cds

I do wish to play with a band again soon, though

  • that's really good :)

  • nice line
