Just remember that Tails reacts not to what's around, but to Sonic. The timing is 300 milliseconds after Sonic jumps. This timing is the trouble spot.

In the normal stages, Sonic peaks at 6 px/fr on level ground when running. The maximum scrolling speed for this game is 16 px/fr though Sonic's speed has an absolute maximum of 128 px/fr of which I can get in only 3 areas (Metropolis, Azure Lake, and Desert Palace - the first requires debug, but the other 2 don't, the latter is the easiest to do).
well DUH! :D That's why you plug the game into the Sonic and Knuckles cartrage and play as Knuckles! :D It's so much easier! That's how we got them all! XDD I only watched this for the music but Great job on the Chaos Emeralds! :D *thumbsup*

Pausing is such a wonderous aid. It works with almost any game and significantly improves the difficulty (making it a lot easier). If I was given a brand new stage about as difficult as the fifth one, I could get the emerald on the first try with pausing quite well and with a good chance. Instead of a 280 ms reaction time, it's 50 ms. Timing precision is within 10 ms instead of around 40 ms. That's a huge improvement! Try pausing repeatedly once and watch how much easier they are.
They are very tricky if you don't pause the game to work around reaction time limitations and provide better control. With pausing, I have the 7 emeralds before the first boss. Without it, it could go on beyond Casino night before I finally get them, stage 5 and 7 are the trickiest, 5 especially.

judging by the movement of the arrows on the ground and the ball things above, sonic was going A LOT slower than he does in the normal stages.
