Prove it. Prove to me that you are 80% right. I'm not saying you're wrong I just want a simple response of your "Fact". I'm an Atheist, not a closet Atheist but I respect other people's religion and I just want you to PROVE to me how you are in fact 80% right all the time
Unfortunately, there is a down side to all this. The brain has limited resources to work with, and most beliefs that people hold are not scrutinized thoroughly. There simply isn't sufficient time to do so. So the brain takes it's perception of truth as reality whether the evidence for it is good or not. Therefore, I conclude that many of the things which I believe are probably wrong (even though I can't say which ones).
Why stop at eighty percent? When we examine their childish, moronic, self-contradictory myths with logic, we can be entirely certain that 100% of religious people are wrong in their beliefs. "God" as they like to consider him is actually quite easy to disprove, despite rumors to the contrary. Since religion is the opposite of rationality (by its own definition), it's hardly surprising that all these irrational people are essentially always wrong in their illogical ideas.
Umm... someone comes out of the closet and claims to be the closet atheist? Whatever, I'll respond anyway.
As the argument goes, if Christians are right, then (let's say 80% of theistic watchers of this video are Christians who'll all grant that they all go to heaven) 80% of the people who watch this video are right. Then, you have only a guaranteed 20% chance of success. You'd have great odds vs the rest of the world, but that wouldn't matter.
See, we never actually dealt with the probability of a religion being false or true, merely with the probability that someone you point at will have a religion which is false. Subtly different, but it's enough to make me right and you presumptuous.
Thought experiment: you go into an all-Christian community. Either 100% are right or 100% are wrong. You are right at least 0% of the time when telling them their religious is false.
That is the funniest thing I've heard in some time.
Of course, I could go brandishing credentials at this point like a douche, but I think I'll just drop it. My argument is solid enough as is, and it would be too much effort to restate it.
Actually, I need to apologize. You haven't shown that you suck at math. I think it's logic which is causing you problems.
Yes, if you change the sample set the percentages will change. However, I think I state explicitly that I am talking about the whole world. In which case, my 80% estimate is a very conservative number.
If I am in a room with 1,000 people, all Christians of exactly the same belief, there is still at least an 80% chance that their beliefs about religion are wrong.
Not from the basis you're working from. This would require the additional assumption that the probability that a religion is true is equal to the proportion of the worldwide population that shares this belief. This was not a working assumption in your video and I think you would find it rather hard to justify.
I mean, extend your argument to atheists. If any religion is right, they're wrong, so it works fine. Now you're in a room with 1,000 people, all atheists, there is a >80% p. they're wrong?
Hmmm... I would say the chance of a virgin conceiving a child sans a turkey baster full of very physical semen to be less than 0.00001%. I think that establishes pretty well what the chances of Christians being right is.
Yup, agreed with that too. I'm pretty sure I didn't dispute this part (and if I came off that way, that was an accident).
Oh, I would prefer to phrase that as
"Thus, there is an 80% chance that if you point at someone at random, you will be pointing at someone who has incorrect beliefs about religion."
It's logically equivalent, but this phrasing is less ambiguous, as yours *may* (accidentally) imply that the truth of any given person's beliefs may be verified this way, which is not the case.
Yep, the sentence/sentiment ~3:44-3:52 saying that you can make a statement similar to the above about your viewers as opposed to the world at large. The problem with that being that I sincerely doubt that your viewers are representative of the global population, and would suppose that the theists among them (whom that sentence singles out) would be overwhelmingly Christian. So while in the overall global case you could point and be right 80% of the time, in this case it would be much lower.
Also, if we wanna get technical, a pew survey showed that the followers of different sects of Christianity (as opposed to the clergy) might not believe that other Christians are going to hell, and might even believe that non-Christians might make it to heaven. Same with other religions. And who knows what Buddhists believe. But this is really a boring point and very nitpick-y and kinda beside the point.
See, you've found the point I disagree with! I'd say that you have an 80% probability of selecting an incorrect person if you choose someone at random from the world. This does not, however, translate into a probability that an individual is incorrect.
You know, that reasoning is similar to saying "80% of the people in the world think there is a god, thus the probability that a person whom you ask about the existence of god is going to be correct is 80%". Untrue globally, very untrue locally.
Hmm... well, as I would wager that most of your viewers originate from the US (due to the nature of the internet and interest in religious debate), it follows that those of them who are religious are probably overwhelmingly Christian. So, you won't have such a good probability against them at all the way you calculate it! Furthermore, statistics show that most most people think others might go to heaven even if their religion disagrees. So, complications...
sapperbloggs - Exactly. However, I didn't have time to do any complex research, so I settled on 80%. The great thing is that using the bare minimum of data I can get to 80%. I have no idea what the largest single block of Muslim belief is.
It would be interesting to know what is the largest group of people who all mutually believe that they are all going to Heaven/the Afterlife. (If that makes sense)
Where do you get 80%? Is the largest single denomination 20% of the population? Or did you just pull that number out of your ass? I'm curious because you don't cite your source in the video.
Finding real numbers is a bit tricky. The Vatican recently announced that Islam had passed Catholicism as the world's largest religion, and they said that 19% of the world is Muslim. (They stated 17% are Catholic)
About 30% of the world is Christian, but half of them believe that the other half is going to Hell.
So, I just made it easy on myself and went with 80%. Which has got to be damn close, even if it was retrieved from my anal region.
That is actually awesome!!

Oh, I quite agree, it just doesn't follow from the argument presented in the video :)
Elithrion 3 years ago
Hey, it's always neat to find that I missed a response!
If you are still interested, I will continue.
Let me simplify. I would state that the largest group of like-minded believers in the world contains 20% of the population (or less).
Do you agree to that?
ClosetAtheist 3 years ago
Sure.
Elithrion 3 years ago
That means that the *most* people who, right now, are correct about their religious beliefs is 20% or less.
And, of course, that means that 80% (or more) of the world's population are *wrong* about their beliefs.
Thus, there is an 80% chance that any person in the world that you point at has incorrect beliefs about religion.
Note that I am completely ignoring probabilities of *truth*.
ClosetAtheist 3 years ago
Yup, agreed with that too. I'm pretty sure I didn't dispute this part (and if I came off that way, that was an accident).

The probability applies to every single person in the world. It doesn't matter who. Each individual person has an 80% chance of being incorrect.
I'll stand by my statement.
