I used Black Rapid straps for a while. They seemed like a good idea but in use they were a pain to use. The camera moves and swings around too much for my liking. When walking you have to keep a hand on the camera to stop it bouncing around. I now use the Spider Pro belt system and it's great. I use it with a length of black cord connected to one of the camera strap lugs (cord worn like a messenger bag strap across my body) as a safety backup in case I drop the camera. Much better in every way.
I do think that you don't give the RS dr-1 complete credit for people like me - I'm a female, 160cm tall & a very small build - I constantly have 2 cameras with me at all times (because I shoot mainly with prime lenses), and as I don't have broad shoulders, I can't do the 'camera on the shoulder' trick that most men have no problem accomplishing - which means that I end up carrying two cameras around my neck (& I need a lot of recovery time!) - so for me, this is absolutely brilliant!
Im using custom modified backpack strap(s) . comfy with neoprene thing and for slightly less money, and also I absolutely love the classic mounting, not this bolt bullshit
1st of all thx for all ur videos, i do think they'll very helpful, at least for me to know AN OTHER PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW instead of a demos of sponsorship.
2ndly there is a solution( sort of) for changing lens while using a BR fastener attached on ur cam , which is to get urself BR-T1 fastener, which can be used with a tripod quick-release plate, that helps camera stands straight while off the trap for lens changement etc. I'm using one, it's wicked.
Hey Dom, I can see your points for sure...I have the RS-7 single camera strap, and I really like it, but I do hate the camera hanging upside down, and I don't like the way it fastens with that clip...but overall, it spreads the weight across the shoulders better than the skinny strap the camera came with. Here in North America we know NOTHING about style or aesthetics,so most wedding photographers are fine wearing cargo pants and polo shirts,so the jacket issue never comes up LOL.
@gregorycazillo they really need to make their instructions more clear, what's the benefit if having it at the back? And does that not make adjusting it very difficult. Feel free to do a reply video. Show how its really done
@Dombowerphoto That small strap keeps the cameras from falling forward when you lean over. I typically don't use it since it doesn't fit me but I will try it for a future video. BTW I love mine...I have both a RS-7 and DR-1. Seriously I couldn't live without them, especially at weddings. The way mine is setup I just slip it over my head, hook up the cameras and go. LOVE IT...sooooo much easier than the crappy, way to short straps from camera manufacturers...
@gregorycazillo Well, it works great for 98% photographers, only problem for 2% because of there special use. Like shooting is iceland with jackets, gloves or while jumping from the plane.
Every product is made to satisfy maximum users and not every single user can be satisfied.
@Dombowerphoto This is not a "review", its "your view" on this product. Not everyone lives in scotland, not every product is meant to satisfy the scottish and not all photographers wants to wear jackets to look cool.
@hdjkasdhah my 'review' is based on my 'view' of the product otherwise it is just a demonstration. That is why it is on my channel not the blackrapid channel. People need to see an opinion on this product that isnt sponsored or hoping for sponsorship
@Dombowerphoto So if you hate BMW does that makes it a bad car? Since your review will say so. A lot of photographers like blackrapid straps and all can't be stupid.

@Dombowerphoto Greg Did @gregorycazillo a fantastic review keeping everyone in mind. He could have said that this product is shit, because half accessories doesn't fit him because he is a big guy but he didn't. He just mentioned his personal view and did consider all user hence a complete review.
LMAO 8:15 you look like you are about to parachute out of air force one, Dom, go back to the old way it's better. Literally killing myself laughing...it's too much isn't it?
Thanks Dom, that was a thorough field test. I guess it doesn't shoot your style, I can see it being used in short bursts using extended hoods to protect the lens (and no lens caps), but a whole event it's not worth it, bag change time isn't a problem.
jaredpolin is great but i think he is bias because blackrapid sponsors on his channel. i think dom review is much more objective and practical since he is not pressured to say "go buy it, its good".
dude you are doing it all wrong, you have to ask @JaredPolin about R straps. he is the best with this. but you both are good photographers. but @JaredPolin is the one when it comes to R strap.
To have 2 months worth of income dangling left and right like that, seems crazy to me... seems like a failed copy from the military and climbing industry... I wouldn't buy it... Good thorough video! I find gear like that should accommodate the photographer and not the other way around.
@Teuton1978 this product is awesome! I don't even change lens anymore thanks to this! just 24-70mm on my right and 70-200mm on my left. Everything you need right there.
@unprofessionalvids what do you shoot when you have both of those around you and do you have the extra strap at the front or back, and how does it feel with the lenses bumping into the hips?
RS-7 is great for me. If You walk a lot, You have to hold the camera down or grip it to not move but it's great that You have both hands free after a shot
silly idea !! n an absloute rip off i would not pay £100 for that its not like were carrying guns !! and going too war . its just a big harness for climbing and its just a faff :LL
I use a RS7 myself and I really love it. I had the same thought about missing out on the normal straps once I started to use the RS7.
I solved it by putting small carabiner hooks on my normal strap so if I don't want to use my RS7 I just hook the normal strap on to the camera, it literally takes a second or two.
for formal events, such as a wedding, I wouldn't dare wear that strap. It's a distracting eyesore regardless of whether it's on top of, or underneath your jacket. I also like keeping my cameras on individual straps (one around neck, hanging from neck and one over neck, slung underneath shoulder). It's a much more acceptable practice, from what I've seen. If I had to wear that thing, it would be over my coat. The only people I've seen wearing these things are sports photographers on the sideline
Another piece of kit that I have that gives me loads of peace of mind is a pelican case with pick and pluck foam, keeps my equipment very safe, dry and dust free, had to import it but I found out after there are dealers in Ireland and England which should make them easier to get, worth checking out at least!!!
I have similar straps to the black rapid but single straps, I use them for my 5d mark ii and my 500d and I find them really good, I dont have the original straps on the camera anymore and I think it gives my hands more freedom around the camera, I also dont use the caribeener on the straps to remove them from the camera, I just twist of the section for the tripod mount each time, its just as easy. For me they are ideal, I wouldnt consider going back to my old straps again!!
Dom did you know that the little "extra" strap is for the back??? and not for the front?? the purpose of it is, that the camera's aren't on your hips but on your back when you don't use them.
Ive used it exclusively since a full shoulder rebuild last year, it's a god sent! I have yet to need to wear a jacket period at any wedding? wear a black shirt FFS! as for Looks? WTF? seriously?!! who wears a backpack at a wedding? use $5 ebay aftermarket clips with your tripod mounts on them and the cameras hang spot on. carry your tri/mono laying on top of your camera bag attached with a big carabena clip to the strap then you can kick it out the way for bag access and lens changes easily
@GingerSnapsPhoto you dont wear a jacket at a wedding? I shoot in scotland, I need a jacket, it also make me look smart, moving all those cameras around will untuck my shirt and make me look scruffy.
@9:27 you have the additional strap not he front and not the back. It is meant to be on the back and bring the cameras to a safer position toward the back side of your hips.
@Dombowerphoto Yes LOL!! PLEASE DONT WEAR THAT THING..THAT DOES LOOK LIKE YOU ARE APART OF THE S..W.A.T TEAM LMAO!! OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH THIS IS TOO FUNNY..PLEASE DONT WEAR THAT THING YOU LOOK CRAZY~~!!!
I carry my strap on the hip with my home made longer strap. I carry my bag with lenses. This thing is garbage for lots of money. For photographers who think they are better than they are and love to spend money to compensate for a poor photography and a small penis.
If you're worried about how you look, you're not worried about the right thing.
I worry about getting the shot.
This rig is mainly needed for sports/outdoor shoots. I don't get many laughs wearing my dual rig, but one thing's for sure, I don't miss shots, and the ones who know are impressed. They know that I'm there to work, not win a beauty contest.
@apexlXMR it can't be popular because it's comfortable? Nah, has to be us amateurs want to look cool. Stop trying so hard not to be cool, it makes you a tool.
@kawakocher which also makes me think that using this at an outdoor sport event is out of the question and also in a concert where there is a big crowd.
My opinion hasn't changed on this product. I think it's "gimicky" and the only reason it's popular is because the industry is filled with amateur photographers who think equipment is more important than knowledge/skills & like looking like "professionals" with all their gear & expensive cameras. I had the same train of thought....when I was 13. Everyone matures eventually.
Dom. I love your videos, and I watch every single post you make. The last two seem a bit ridiculous. You can't compare a bag to a strap. Two completely different things solving two completely different problems.
Also, as far as the tripod mount goes, carry-speed makes a similar single cam sling strap with a 1/4 tripod mount for around $30. I would personally not use this dual cam thing unless I was shooting a concert. For a wedding I think i would just stick with the basic strap for looks.
@OggOrbisMedia the shoulder bag was the closest thing that i have that i can compare, what else apart from a rucksac can hold 2 cameras around your body without you using your hands... I am still yet to find the problem that the double strap solves.
also at a concert would you use it? as i think the bashing off people in the dark would definitly result in lost lens caps and hoods
@Dombowerphoto Two camera straps could? :D I just felt they were too far apart for the comparison to make sense.
Most concerts I've been to have always had a designated area for Photographers, so (at least in my area) you wouldn't have to worry about bumping into anyone except for another photographer. You have to admit the product puts two cameras right at your finger tips, is much quicker than grabbing stuff out of a bag, and feels better than a normal neck strap.
I think wearing the double strap over the suit would be ok but i wouldnt do up the strap across the chest. I think that would annoy me when using it and i think thats what draws more attention to it.
With regards the to jacket being open issue - it might look better if you wore a waistcoat, but that may not be practical if you get hot.
I researched getting the "normal" BR strap (RS1?), and a couple of things I read about these:
1) If you have a Manfrotto quick release plate DO NOT use the "D ring" on the screw that comes with the plate - they can pull apart and come off! BR make a replacement for this reason.
2) They can come unscrewed, so you have to frequently make sure they are tight.
Thought the video below might be of some use to you given you were complaining about the comfort and safety of the cameras at your hips. I'm referring you to this guys video since he demonstrates how the popper strap you took of the sling (I believe that was the thing you took of the black rapid in your first video) can help secure the camera round the small of your back so as to prevent your cameras dangling at your hips. Hope it helps.
I don't do a lot of wedding photography, but I do work at a mansion where they do weddings. I recently saw my first DR-1 there, and they shot with it under their clothes. A typical 70-200 and wide angle lens set up on their two cameras, and it looked fine. I think the main benefit of the DR-1, other than two cameras, is equal support on the shoulders. A lumpy strap on one shoulder, then a bag on top, just looks uncomfortable.
I use the RS-7 myself and have the camera positioned so when it's at my side it is more around towards my back and not hitting my hip, this feels at lot better I think. Great video Dom some things I did not consider myself that you brought up, Cheers for all your videos
Good rant Dom. I think the Dual black rapid set up does look ridiculous both to photographers and non-photographers alike...you look like a total nerd.
HOWEVER......one black Rapid strap over your body looks pretty cool.....I would highly recommended you just take one strap and have your camera with the 70-200 on there, and then your other camera just with a normal strap.
(However my set up of choice these days is just one body and change lenses with a good I can sling them around in.).
I try not to look like a guest at the wedding, so I'll not have a suit jacket on.
People do realise you are there working - but I do realise people are different in their approach. If you go suited and booted - then it's probably not the strap for you
As for keeping warm - vest or t-shirt under the shirt :) sweat patches; I always have a spare shirt.
You look like 007 with all that gear on top of the suit buttoned up. Just saying. I can see this kind of thing being used in sports shoots where a lot of people are probably gonna be geared up anyhow but it does look pretty funny for formal occasions like weddings.
Hip bounce doesn't worry me as I always like to keep a hand on the camera. I know the fastener is secure but carrying a D3S and a 70-200mm means I want to be VERY sure!
I do share concerns about lens caps though - or rather one lens cap in particular - and thats the hood for the 14-24mm. Mine's quite a loose fit anyway and any movement tends to shake it loose. Nowadays I leave it off as soon as it's on the camera.
I think I wouldnt like the double bit getup very much either. I love my Rs7 but its quite easy to control one carmera on it, and still be hands free when I need to be. 2 cameras look like alot of camera wrangling, but thats just me. Try just the one strap for your main camera and use a regular neck strap for the camera you might just need to pick up for a second. Even if you carried them BOTH like that for a whole wedding the one on the black rapid will be off your neck. Nice review Dom!
The Black Rapid (RS Dr-1) is originally designed for sports and media photographers where lenses are not switched out that often. They're not exactly practical for wedding photographers who do swap out more often. I would recommend the single RS-7 for one camera, and a regular camera strap with hand grip combo on other. I wear my cameras rather high on me and never had an issue.
These straps, like any other accessories, are tools of the trade. You learn and use what's best for your needs.
Ive used the single RS4 strap for a few months now on my D80 and found the constant movement of the camera on the hip whilst walking very annoying. That was until i purchased a battery grip. it seems the extra 2 inches or so that the grip is eliminates all movement of the camera whilst walking and just sticks to my hip in one place.......i would say stick with your strap it will grow on you alot and is much better for your neck than regular camera straps.
And what about your flash????? cant always be off camera need a flash on one of them cameras..and then bang oops flash broke or camera ..round the neck or shoulder neva have it hanging down it will break..oh and its not a friggin GUN pfft
@dombower Oh Dom, I have so much to say so I'll have to sit down later and post to your blog. Meanwhile, here's a quickie! For half of this review you seem to be comparing this to a bag - unless I'm mistaken the Black Rapid is not trying to be a padded bag to store my camera in, it's a strap! As for you throwing away the electronics protector for your D700 - madness! And don't let it bang on your side, it's worth a lot of money. My BR is set to hands length and I ALWAYS have hold of my D700.
@Dannygo99 was trying out the single strap last night, and thought it was ok. but what do you think of the fact that the electrical parts open to the rain, weather sealing issues, bouncing off the legs etc. do you get sore hips from the camera bouncing?
@dombower 1) You won't loose your "fastener" if you leave it on the carabin. Carabin rotates so you can unscrew camera without unhooking the body from strap first.
2) I prefer camera little bit lower, when in your video. When c-body near your upper-bum and lens looks backward camera not swiveling arownd the hips.
3) Also you have 2 "bumpers" to fix camera on any place of strap. I found it handy, when you going, especially through crowd.
Also you're not utilizing the bumpers on the strap. They are there to keep your cameras from being on your side bashing around on everything. I keep the strap short so the camera can be in a safe location on my body. Last thing anyone needs is to bump into someone or something that damages your camera
I AM VERY PLEASED WITH EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO, BUT... I feel like this is an infomercial where a person is having a hard time doing something very simple... The work that you do need is just one strap one bag. I'm sure this is made for people that do something very action packed and needs multiple cameras readily available at a moments notice without fumbling around with bags ie sports, large weddings and certain events. I still gave this video a "like" because it tested thoroughly. Good job!
@Dombowerphoto you have a point on the jacket paired with this strap. I haven't seen any videos where a person is using these straps with a jacket on. Not a problem though here in Southeast Asia. Too hot for jackets and umbrellas are essential to be brought along.
The strap will take some getting used to. When I got mine I was really uncomfortable with it at first and I was always fearing that the cam would fall. So far so good. I only use one strap though.
The set up with the two individual straps look waaay to distracting for a wedding. There are yellow lettering on the straps and you look tangled up with technically 4 straps (one on each side of both cameras). The Black Rapid is much more pleasing to the eye both under and over the suit jacket, yet much better under. The two straps look cumbersome and im surprised you dont have a problem pulling the camera to your face with the 2 single strap setup. Why would you need 2 cams when your out? idk
have to admit using it with a suit just looks stupid. But maybe it's not aimed at those type of events. I can see it as more for sports photographers.
I love the single strap SunSniper and Black Rapid on my 7D and every lens up to 100-400mm (be careful when changing when the lens is mounted on the strap - I nearly forgot!). Would the Cotton Carrier be better for you?
I used Black Rapid straps for a while. They seemed like a good idea but in use they were a pain to use. The camera moves and swings around too much for my liking. When walking you have to keep a hand on the camera to stop it bouncing around. I now use the Spider Pro belt system and it's great. I use it with a length of black cord connected to one of the camera strap lugs (cord worn like a messenger bag strap across my body) as a safety backup in case I drop the camera. Much better in every way.

I use mine at weddings but I wear a shirt and tie, I wouldn't wear a jacket. I would find the jacket as uncomfortable as you find the strap.

I can see this strap being uncomfortable but i really like the R-strap 7 its the one i currently use and i really like it.
MrGearMo 6 months ago
@apexlXMR it can't be popular because it's comfortable? Nah, has to be us amateurs want to look cool. Stop trying so hard not to be cool, it makes you a tool.

LOL you look like Hitman transporting is gun's or a horse with strapping!!!
I think you should continu to use the normal camera strap!!!
I have hard time to breathe just by watching you with does tight strap!!!

I was just at the fringe festival and both the crowd and the rain makes this unusable.
kawakocher 6 months ago
@kawakocher which also makes me think that using this at an outdoor sport event is out of the question and also in a concert where there is a big crowd.

Loustechworld 6 months ago
My opinion hasn't changed on this product. I think it's "gimicky" and the only reason it's popular is because the industry is filled with amateur photographers who think equipment is more important than knowledge/skills & like looking like "professionals" with all their gear & expensive cameras. I had the same train of thought....when I was 13. Everyone matures eventually.
ApexIXMR 6 months ago
OggOrbisMedia 6 months ago
@OggOrbisMedia the shoulder bag was the closest thing that i have that i can compare, what else apart from a rucksac can hold 2 cameras around your body without you using your hands... I am still yet to find the problem that the double strap solves.
also at a concert would you use it? as i think the bashing off people in the dark would definitly result in lost lens caps and hoods
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago
@Dombowerphoto Two camera straps could? :D I just felt they were too far apart for the comparison to make sense.
Most concerts I've been to have always had a designated area for Photographers, so (at least in my area) you wouldn't have to worry about bumping into anyone except for another photographer. You have to admit the product puts two cameras right at your finger tips, is much quicker than grabbing stuff out of a bag, and feels better than a normal neck strap.

i think you're old method was fine. the new set up looks ridiculous

I think wearing the double strap over the suit would be ok but i wouldnt do up the strap across the chest. I think that would annoy me when using it and i think thats what draws more attention to it.
loony24m 6 months ago
Lose the other straps. They look dangly and stupid. You're going to be pulling chairs and small children along with you.
Maybe shorten the R straps so the cameras are above your hips. Maybe a black shirt, so you can't see the camera strap? Jacket on the top, definitely.
Maybe you just have big hips :o)
SLRist 6 months ago
@SLRist shorten the straps? i thought the point of this was to have nice long straps so it is at hands reach all the time?
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago

SillyEddyPhotography 6 months ago
Haha, good point about weather sealing. I have a RS-7 single strap.
AtOregon 6 months ago
Great review, and pretty entertaining with the riot gear and all.
toccata33 6 months ago
I use the RS-7 myself and have the camera positioned so when it's at my side it is more around towards my back and not hitting my hip, this feels at lot better I think. Great video Dom some things I did not consider myself that you brought up, Cheers for all your videos
TheBbp001 6 months ago
Good rant Dom. I think the Dual black rapid set up does look ridiculous both to photographers and non-photographers alike...you look like a total nerd.
HOWEVER......one black Rapid strap over your body looks pretty cool.....I would highly recommended you just take one strap and have your camera with the 70-200 on there, and then your other camera just with a normal strap.
(However my set up of choice these days is just one body and change lenses with a good I can sling them around in.).
Cheers

I try not to look like a guest at the wedding, so I'll not have a suit jacket on.
People do realise you are there working - but I do realise people are different in their approach. If you go suited and booted - then it's probably not the strap for you
As for keeping warm - vest or t-shirt under the shirt :) sweat patches; I always have a spare shirt.
DoctorFish10 6 months ago
You look like 007 with all that gear on top of the suit buttoned up. Just saying. I can see this kind of thing being used in sports shoots where a lot of people are probably gonna be geared up anyhow but it does look pretty funny for formal occasions like weddings.

Hey Dom
Hip bounce doesn't worry me as I always like to keep a hand on the camera. I know the fastener is secure but carrying a D3S and a 70-200mm means I want to be VERY sure!
I do share concerns about lens caps though - or rather one lens cap in particular - and thats the hood for the 14-24mm. Mine's quite a loose fit anyway and any movement tends to shake it loose. Nowadays I leave it off as soon as it's on the camera.
Rain? I stay out of rain... I might melt... :D
Keep up the cool vids!

Pagansdad 6 months ago
The Black Rapid (RS Dr-1) is originally designed for sports and media photographers where lenses are not switched out that often. They're not exactly practical for wedding photographers who do swap out more often. I would recommend the single RS-7 for one camera, and a regular camera strap with hand grip combo on other. I wear my cameras rather high on me and never had an issue.
These straps, like any other accessories, are tools of the trade. You learn and use what's best for your needs.
elsiephysio 6 months ago
Hey Dom
Ive used the single RS4 strap for a few months now on my D80 and found the constant movement of the camera on the hip whilst walking very annoying. That was until i purchased a battery grip. it seems the extra 2 inches or so that the grip is eliminates all movement of the camera whilst walking and just sticks to my hip in one place.......i would say stick with your strap it will grow on you alot and is much better for your neck than regular camera straps.

And what about your flash????? cant always be off camera need a flash on one of them cameras..and then bang oops flash broke or camera ..round the neck or shoulder neva have it hanging down it will break..oh and its not a friggin GUN pfft
gsyguy1 6 months ago
If single strap is still not that convenient for you, then you should try Holster (spider strap)? Just a suggestion.
aelone 6 months ago
@dombower Oh Dom, I have so much to say so I'll have to sit down later and post to your blog. Meanwhile, here's a quickie! For half of this review you seem to be comparing this to a bag - unless I'm mistaken the Black Rapid is not trying to be a padded bag to store my camera in, it's a strap! As for you throwing away the electronics protector for your D700 - madness! And don't let it bang on your side, it's worth a lot of money. My BR is set to hands length and I ALWAYS have hold of my D700.
thecrystalfairy 6 months ago
@Dannygo99 was trying out the single strap last night, and thought it was ok. but what do you think of the fact that the electrical parts open to the rain, weather sealing issues, bouncing off the legs etc. do you get sore hips from the camera bouncing?
dombower 6 months ago
@dombower 1) You won't loose your "fastener" if you leave it on the carabin. Carabin rotates so you can unscrew camera without unhooking the body from strap first.
2) I prefer camera little bit lower, when in your video. When c-body near your upper-bum and lens looks backward camera not swiveling arownd the hips.
3) Also you have 2 "bumpers" to fix camera on any place of strap. I found it handy, when you going, especially through crowd.

Way over the top i think Dom, For a wedding that is. I always try to stay as slim as possible. 2 boddies at my sides, does not let me moove around.
The problem with tripid mount is not realy a problem. in mine there is a threaded hole on the bottom side. (monfroto).
Maby works for journalist? dont know. would not be mine chooce of gear for wedding.

Lose the jacket!
1rhett1 6 months ago
Also you're not utilizing the bumpers on the strap. They are there to keep your cameras from being on your side bashing around on everything. I keep the strap short so the camera can be in a safe location on my body. Last thing anyone needs is to bump into someone or something that damages your camera

@Velli1987 I second that, and why is the strap so loose? of course its bashing to your hips. comon Dom.
Axxex 6 months ago
I AM VERY PLEASED WITH EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO, BUT... I feel like this is an infomercial where a person is having a hard time doing something very simple... The work that you do need is just one strap one bag. I'm sure this is made for people that do something very action packed and needs multiple cameras readily available at a moments notice without fumbling around with bags ie sports, large weddings and certain events. I still gave this video a "like" because it tested thoroughly. Good job!
omnseks 6 months ago
strange no mention from anyone. About the hip bashing,or rain issue .
FYI I shoot weddings in Scotland , u need a jack to keep warm or hide your sweat patches.
Dombowerphoto 6 months ago
@Dombowerphoto you have a point on the jacket paired with this strap. I haven't seen any videos where a person is using these straps with a jacket on. Not a problem though here in Southeast Asia. Too hot for jackets and umbrellas are essential to be brought along.
The strap will take some getting used to. When I got mine I was really uncomfortable with it at first and I was always fearing that the cam would fall. So far so good. I only use one strap though.
Interesting series you got here.

Why would you need 2 cams when your out? idk

I agree with some guys here... Not a good strap for wedding photos
