  • Don't blame the developers, blame the console / cartridge limitations. The developer for the game only had a 2K cart to work with, as opposed to 4K carts around that time.

  • Son of a B***h,MED PACK! I NEED A MED PACK!

  • For The Game, Not the Review.

  • It's clear that I don't know a lot about games, in my opinion it was a normal pac man and I did not find it so awful, but as I said I'm not an expert.

  • on the atari 7800 are the walls supposed to look kind of orange-ish? i'm also using a Zenith analog glass-screen tv probly from the 90s, could that be another thing?

  • There is a reason this game is so terrible. It's a prototype. It's not even a finished game.

  • Strange, but the opening theme is from a sex hotline number, no joke, call 1800-eat-puss and listren closel too the bakround no joke

  • @123stephenno Why do you call sex hotlines?... are you a lonely perverted stranger?

  • @123stephenno I think it's a stock music :3

    watch?v=fNwhW6EmV_g

  • I Thought It Was OK

  • This has to be Mark's saddest review. You can just hear the disappointment and anger in his voice. This port of Pac-Man must've just broken his heart when it came out.

  • there's a copy that's been sitting in a goodwill near me for about 3 months

  • If you linger long enough on a board, you can eat as many vitamins as you please. Their appearance is on a timer independent of how you clear the board, so it looks like sometimes you get 1, 2, or 3 vitamins on a single board. In reality, you can eat as many as possible...just don't eat the last Video Wafer on the board until you're satisfied you ate enough.

  • It wasn't E.T. or Pacman that caused the crash of 1983. For one, Pacman on the 2600 was released in 1981. The "crash of 1983" was due to too many companies making too many gaming consoles with an overflowing amount of substandard video games flooding the market. There were so many competitors on the market that the market was over saturated and people stopped buying video games. That was the cause of the crash, not E.T or Pacman.

  • ET on the 2600 is far worse. Some say that it was what triggered the 1983 crash Pacman (2600) wasn't as bad as ET cause ATARI dumped the 5 million unsold games of ET.

  • Today i went to the flea market and bought this game for 2 dollars so me and my friend decided to destroy this shitty game.

  • How.....do you fuck up pac man?

  • The game was one of the cancers that killed the Video Game market.

  • @VagrantNoName Which was revived by a plumber named Mario just 3 years later. lol

  • @ZombieKidCrazy. The CRASH was in 1984 not 1983. It started in '83.

  • wtf why theres only 2 ghosts?

  • Mark: This game is god awful.

AVGN: This game is F*ckin horrible

  • The ghosts will actually change to a purple-ish color before returning to normal.

  • Still better than COD.

  • This was the first Pac-Man game I ever played as a kid, so I don't hate it as much as everyone else seems to. Even though there are better versions out there, I still play this one once in a while.

  • Mark, if you read this, could you please review the game Pac-Man Championship Edition DX for PS3 / XBOX360? That game is awesome!

  • Yeah, it is "god awful." But back in the day, before Ms Pac came along, we played the hell out of this game. Why? Because we were able to play Pac-Man at home! With no quarters!! Sure it was different, but it was Pacman, at home!!! When Ms Pac came along, and it was so much better, that's when Pacman started fading in our eyes.

  • @briguy1971 true, it's easy for people to shit on this game now but back in the day when it came out, it was the bomb. I have never heard anyone back in 1982 or 1983 saying that the game sucked. Everyone who had an atari had this game and they loved it.

As for Pac-Man's offspring, his name is Jr. Pac-Man, not Pac-Man Jr.

  • @deadlygroove1 Right on! I couldn't have put it better myself. I got this game for Christmas back in '82 and I was just so happy I could play Pac-man at home without shoveling quarters into the arcade. I, nor any of my friends, ever called this game garbage back in the early eighties. We were thankful we got to play one of our favorite games over and over again at home!!

  • @concretespecial you know this game caused the gaming crash of '83 right? Still, i love pacman!

  • @zombiekidcrazy no no, it was ET that caused it, though I don't doubt that Pac Man had a part in it as well.

  • dude, your biggest complaint with the game is they don't blink? they technically do. they turn blue, then they turn red, THEN they change back to normal. since you're so used to red being the color of one of the ghosts, you don't realize that red means you can still eat them. don't blame the game. it's your own fault!

  • Why are the ghosts white?

  • Have you reviewed PacMan JR?

  • its an atari game they all look like shit :3

  • Odd, didn't think it was possible to screw up pac-man....

  • This would've been a good port of Pac Man, if Atari wouln't have screwed it up! The reason why everybody or MOSTLY ( i don't know how someone would actually like this game) hates this game is because it is a prototype. Instead of waiting for the final product of Pac Man to come out, they decided to PUBLISH THE PROTOTYPE! This game ( along with ET) caused the video game crash of 1983 and the huge amount of money loss of money for Atari! And for a lot of other reasons, too.

  • i remember being a kid and waiting 6 months for them to release this on the 2600. people were so excited for it and then they released this total POS. the WORST game in history!!!!

  • For your next review: E.T. for the 2600

  • I actually like this version probably because I like the sound effects. I had fun with it back in the 80s when I was a little kid.

  • watch this in 260p

  • This I believe may have been one of the first games that has led to the video game crash in 83-84, after atari kept on releasig bad games, and diffrent consoles kept spriging up everywhere. They managed to sell 7 million out of 12 million of pac man, the rest were buried in a landfill. This all happened when 3 important atari employees left atari and started a company called activision. And that's the video game crash that more or less began with this game, Pac-Man on the Atari2600.

  • "This horrible abomination on the screen." :| What a way to begin.

  • @shanaynaydre50royal Do you even know what you're talking about? In the beginning of your post, you said that Namco came up with Pac-Man, and then near the end of it, you said that Atari came up with Pac-Man. Get your facts straight! I believe that this is the only "official" version of Pac-Man on the Atari 2600. And by the "Namco" version, which one? Did Namco make a console? Or did you mean one of the hundreds of ports to various home consoles over the years?!?

  • @shanaynaydre50royal It's somehow addicting. I'm not really sure why I love it so much but I'll just let you know that not everyone can just go to Wal-Mart and buy a Pac-Man arcade game so it's cheaper just to buy the Atari version. But yeah, call me crazy, but I love this game! lol

  • when i got my 2600 copy of pac-man a few months back, i was hoping that the screen would look like the cartridge's backgrond, i got superman at the same time, i played that more, but i had the 7800 ms. pac-man sooooo, im pretty much set with games like: pitfall, yars revenge, superman, cetepide (7800), but i sold karateka, because karateka for atari 7800 was horrible

  • After many hours of playing 2600 Pac-Man, I have to say........OK. This game is just OK. It does look like shit, and it's very easy, but as a individual game, it's serviceable. It's one of the worst ARCADE PORTS of all time, but I found the game as a standalone to be tolerable, but not enjoyable.

  • Agreed, this conversion is an abomination (If we can even call it a conversion).

Forget the graphics and the sound. The ghosts' AI is just lame (they just go towards you blindly, unless you have eaten a powerpill - compare that to Ms. Pac-Man), and because of the repetitive maze layout, which is full of holes, it is far too easy to escape the ghosts. If you are moderately good at Pac-Man, you could play this game for hours.

  • i give this 5 atari stars cause its a classic (besides its for atari!!!!!!!! the graphics are supposed to be bad

  • "This game is God awful" lol !!! Nice. It sucks but I liked it at home back in the day. The worst part is that you can't see where all the ghosts are all the time because the flicker in and out. That's why it appears pac man dies for no reason. The reason is because a ghost touched him but you can't even see the f'n things half the time!

  • i have one that works just fine. it's not the worst but its not the best ether

  • the game E.T. is even worse!

  • lol this dude is so right.......I some how ended up with several of the same shitty games that I wasn't even trying to get. As shitty as this game is, I would play it right now. Any game that takes me down memory lane is good in my book.

  • Pac-Man on Atari 2600 was such a flop, it makes Pac-Man look bad.

  • did u know that pac man was suposed 2 b a girls game and that only1 gost is actually chaseing pacman

  • I didn't think this was THAT bad, I was 10 and didn't have many other options to play pac man....

  • this is an abomination to all pac kind

  • which is worse, pac man 2600, or pac man 2?

  • this should have been put to death by the most horrible painfullest death ever it also should have been buried in the desert

    this game sucks balls

  • I played the hell out of this because I didn't know of anything to compare it to. Also, I was like 7.

  • This game, along with ET, ended up buried in the Arizona desert. It was that horrible!

  • @DarkLordNick999 ...It was a PROTOTYPE! ATARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WTF!

  • hahaha, 5 copies of this game

  • One thing I use to do just for fun was as soon as I would get hit by a ghost i would move through the trench at the bottom and as I come out of the top trench Pac Man would seem like he got flattened against the wall and then die. lol

  • Yeah, the ghosts flicker so fast in the actual game which runs at 60 Hz, but youtube videos are at best 30 fps/Hz, and since they flicker one at a time, it makes sense that half of them, 2 out of 4, aren't even visible in the video because they're flicked off during the every-other frames that are missing due to the downconversion from 60 to 30 fps. Yay, math can explain anything.

  • @rchrdcrg that's an A+ for you, and an F (or a Z- if that counts) for this horrible pile of vomit.

  • please watch my pacman review for the atari 2600 but i'm sorry for the cutoff at the end

  • This was not much of a game but rather a cry from help for atari, anyone could have seen that game and realized that something was wrong at Atari. The next major release from the company would be ET.

  • We had ran out of toiletpaper the other day, but I had a Pac-man for atari lying around. Did wonders :)

  • @VirtualBoyGamerShow you win everything with this comment.

  • @VirtualBoyGamerShow theres other games you can use too. but the best one for extra softness and toughness is Sonic the Hedgehog for the ps3. I deeply recommend that game for your uses.

  • I like this one the best... The arcade that is. DUB DUB DUB *annoying beeps*

  • I enjoy this game. I don't know why.

Kinda like the douchebags who enjoy Star Wars Holiday Special...

You don't know why... but it's enjoyable to them.

  • maybe you should learn how to play!

  • THIS GAME RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

  • WTF @ 0:44 ? Pac-Man died without touching a ghost?

  • @Wez2slow possibly the death level. with things like pacman and ms. pacman that have re-occouring mazes, they need a kill level, a level that you cant possibly complete. for the 2600 i think the kill level was like 200 or something.

  • @pivotmasterDM1 Maybe it isn't the death level. First of all, the ghosts flicker all over the screen, spawn-killing Pac-Man. I think that explains what happened at 0:44 and 0:54 (Pac-Man eats an invisible ghost). Second, even if there is a death level, who wants to play this piece of shit long enough to reach it?

  • @Wez2slow LOL! I actually liked this 'abomination' back in the day.

  • @Wez2slow In the game, there are 4 ghosts. Atari couldn't have that many ghosts flying around everywhere at a time because technology wasn't as good as today for home consoles (Plus I believe it IS the first home console), so the developers had to find a way to make it work out. They had to make all ghost flash very fast one at a time, to look like there are 4. For example, 1st frame = Pink ghost, 2nd frame = Red Ghost. His recording didn't show all frames, making it impossible to see all ghosts

  • @Chikun382 OK, I think that makes sense.

  • @Wez2slow WTF, indeed. Either an invisible ghost ate him or the 30th "dot" was poison.

  • @Wez2slow The ghosts flicker so much it's hard to tell where they actually are.

  • @Wez2slow if you noticed the ghosts flicker all over the place.

  • @Wez2slow Bad hit detection is what happens.

  • hey mark we want ET

  • @mspeter97 Even the Angry Video Game Nerd won't review E.T. What makes you think that Mark would? If you want a reviewer that swears a lot and plays crappy games, check out the Angry Video Game Nerd. He's pretty funny on most of his episodes.

  • @wheelman1324 i think avgn won't review it because i rate gamer already reviewed it and he's copied avgn before sooo...

  • @Kennyrules101

He just doesn't want to do it, or hasn't gotten around to it. ET isn't that bad of a game apparently, if you read the manual.

  • @TheEscapedBalloon yeah no the worst game ever if it didn't have glitches all the time then it would be much better

  • @Kennyrules101

Rushed games are almost always mediocre to bad, due to them being..Well, rushed.

  • @TheEscapedBalloon yeah, they could have released it the next christmas....

  • shortest. CGR. review. evur.

  • @OverruledDood yeah but can you blame him? If you listen to how depressed Mark is in this review you can tell how much he hates this game.

  • omg y the fu#@ are u playing it if it suks

  • I was scared to shit when i turned my atari clone on, and this showed up in pink with that horrible noise. I had nightmares because of that.

  • I'm glad they at least improved on ms. pac man for the 2600 not to mention the sound on this sounds like they just hit a single wire

  • i kind of enjoy this game, but i enjoy a lot of games what people consider to be bad.

  • I feel like I'm the only person who likes this (admittedly badly flawed) version of "Pac-man".

  • one of the shortest reviews, probably because the game sucked balz, i gotta get outa here

  • By the end of the 80s I was a really small kid and I remember playing this game with my older brother at my grandma's house. I know this game is a holy shit... but the nostalgic value makes me like it... at least a little more than anyone else... which is not much either xD

  • Look at dat big booty bitch! :L

  • Haha, owning five copies of Pac-Man 2600 must really make you miserable. :P

  • This game gets a bad rap. Yes, it's a terrible port and the flickering ghosts are a little annoying, but it's still a Pac-Man game!

  • i HATE the way people treat pac man for 2600. why do people take a great game, and say its bad because of the comon atari graphics and blinking ghosts. 2 flaws, and its the worst game ever. WTF?

  • @IMZEECATMAN I completely agree, I own this game and I play it all the time. It's probably my favorite game out of all the atari games I have right now. 2nd being donkey kong.

  • Comment removed

  • did Atari realy burried the millions of unsold copies of pac man and ET?

i heard of that story but i cant realy believe it.

  • shit game

  • this game was decent, not god awful

  • OK, enough people have kissed his ass and said, "You're right this game sucks!" Just because he's so popular doesn't mean he's always right. First of all: Just because an Arcade port is DIFFERENT does NOT mean it's bad. You say it's a fact that it looks like shit. No, it's a fact that that's not a fact, it's an opinion. AND YOU CAN FUCKING TIME HOW LONG THE GHOSTS WILL BE VULNARABLE, IT BLEEPS 10 TIMES! You really didn't think they thought of that? Get a life, learn how to be mature and review.

  • @MrSaturn33 We're referring to the flickering even when they aren't blue.

  • @MrSaturn33 Ok,I will buy this game for me as a favor to you and I will say my opinion to you.

  • Comment removed

  • Solution:

    1. Sell this game to AVGN

    2. Use the bucks you get from him to get Ms Pac Man

    3. Pop the fucker in you 2600

    4. ???

    5. Profit!

  • Comment removed

  • Where did they get the maze for this game? It looks nothing like the Arcade Pacman.

  • why do you have 5 of them? lol

  • @kingshott1

Well, I think when he buys a bunch of games, then often Pac-Man is included.

  • 0:45 WTF! He didn't touch a ghost and still died!

  • Calling ET for the atari the worst game ever is bullshit. Action 52 is easily worse, and so is this, custers revenge and firefly.

  • @thenintendogamer everybody knows super mario bros. 3 is the worst game ever made.

  • @ibamark I know right, so is sonic the hedgehog, ratchet and clank, zelda, metroid, pokemon, god of war, all those shitty games...

  • @thenintendogamer That's true. lol I just wanted to see how many fanboys I could piss off by saying that.

  • @ibamark Its not even my favorite mario game. World is

  • @thenintendogamer Really? Same here. That's why I put all those damn cartoons on my channel.

  • @ibamark really? Aww,the baby can't beat Super Mario Bros. 3,it's too hard for him aww :(

  • @ibamark i like it but i'm no fanboy

  • This dude is AWESUM!!

  • It's Atari's fault. They decided to release the first alpha version just to get it for Christmas.

  • No A worse game is......E.T...... Well I dono I dont have an atari but everyone said it was ********(curse) But I dont know why its so bad......I may play to find out XD

  • Why did he die at 0:45??

  • @LupusRexRgis, invisible ghost that is all Atari's fault.

  • it seems no reviewer wants to review et... This dude wants, AVGN wont... no one?

  • @Beaverman20 spooney did

  • @MrAmonkey7 Have to find that review NAO... just to hear how ass it is again :P

  • @Beaverman20 the Irate Idiot tried to review it but landed flat on his face .... it was so damn funny reading all the comments before they got removed

  • what's song name in video beggining?

  • Actually, Atari had a very good copy of this game for the 2600, and this was just a decoy to show the company what the basic generalization of Pacman was. They accidentally released this beta decoy instead of the full game. They're a fail.

  • The worst Atari game is not this or E.T. It's the porn games like "Custards Revenge". Seriously, Atari 2600 porn.

  • @ledawg1138 How about Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em? that was just as raw.

  • DO SPIDER MAN WEB OF SHADOWS FOR THE WII

    its awsome

  • pac man and e.t. were good games on the atari 2600, i loved them. dunno why some ppl dont like it

  • 0:45

Was there even a ghost there?

  • @buzzguy999 Yes, there was. It's just that the constant blinking of the ghosts messes up the video output thus making it appear to be invisible... but it may very well be invisible.

  • This version turned Pac Man Fever into Pac Man Cancer. They didn't really get it right until Ms. Pac Man. It was a much better game.

  • Quit hating this game! It is ATARI not X-BOX It was all the had at the time!

  • i like this old version

  • here's a good idea.

    review the oddworld series.

You can find the first two for the playstation 1.

  • here in Brazil this cartridge came along in the box of the Atari (curiously mine, came with galaxian I hated) was a freebie so no one complained ... Ah, the worst game I've ever bought was Phantom Tank and worst of all in my opinion was ET

  • No E.T. was the worst game ever made. I would call this a horrible disappointment, a poor excuse for the arcade version, pretty bad sure but worst ever no. It did suck but they certainly could have made it better and that was proven by the Atari 2600 version of ms Pacman. it was so much better than this.

  • @mattbyou Todd Frye, the programmer gave Atari the prototype, and they realeased it before christmas. Ms. Pac-man also used a larger cartridge size

  • this version of pac man on the atarti 2600 was one of many factors that caused the video game crash in 1984

  • My sister played this none stop for about 6 hours once and it was a pretty big score

  • T_T MY EYES, THEY BURN!! That seriously hurt to look at. You sounded in pain just reviewing it xD

  • it's pac man from hell. i think the reason its so bad is atari was in a rush to get pac man fever.

  • @serbag In a rush to get Pac-Man Fever, they gave the world Pac-Man AIDS. I like to believe that this wasn't the "real" Pac-Man, but an inferior clone corrupted by the forces of evil in some diabolical scheme to destroy video gaming.

Incidentally, there's a small yellow mass in my university's physics lab that looks just like this thing's fake Pac-Man.

  • @SoulMaster71 LOL

  • I love This GAME! Come to think off it... I like the 80's games in general!!! by the way, would you please review bosconian? please?

  • I remember this version of Pac Man. I recall the graphics were pretty basic but the game was still highly addictive. There was a particular place in the maze where you could stay indefinitely and the ghosts could never find you. It seemed like it was some kind of programming error but it came in handy because if u needed to pause the game to get a drink or something, you could just put the pac man in that spot and leave it there until you got back.

  • The thing was, as bad as the 2600 version of Pac Man was, we still played it to death because it was all we had at the time.

  • Very true. I got the 2600 for Christmas when it first came out, and played the holy hell out of Pac-Man and Tank

  • @DrAmazak you had munchkin, but yeah I know, most people had atari 2600 and not the magnavox

  • @DrAmazak Second

  • I've never really understood why this version of Pacman was so bad! I guess it's because I never played 2600 games until the console was over 20 years old, so I didn't expected incredible gameplay from it.

  • you obviously never played the actual pacman arcade game either, which is why this 2600 Atari version is sooooooo bad!!!

  • If I remember correctly, all new Atari 2600 was equiped with this game as a freebie. Probably why it sucked too

  • this game pissed me off

  • 1:15 lmfao!!!!!!!!!!

  • He wll revew those games hell. He;'s already revewed shaq fu and superman and nntendo 64. He wll but goods thngs come to those who wait? ;)

  • avgn + et fore 2600 = doomsday

  • I've heard that Pacman and ET for the Atari 2600 may have caused the video game crash of 1983

  • They did

  • Mark please review ET :)
