@osoriogold Documented in books 'Icons of Hip Hop Culture:An Encyclopedia of The Movement, Music, Culture Vol. 1 and "To The Break of Dawn: A Freestyle On The Hip Hop Aesthetic",William Jelani. How it's looked at is Pop/R&B with a rapper doing the custom 16 bar verse, the collaboration becoming a crossover Top 5 Pop, R&B, and Dance Hit. Such a pairing had no precedent so much so that American Songwriter from 89, called it "duet". I love NE, don't recall they had a pop hit w Rapper.
@osoriogold I'm just glad you like my song. It was written with a real life friends view by myself (lyrics and melody), Andre Cymone (music), Eric B./ Rakim (rap). I was a huge fan of Eric B and Rakim which is why I wanted them on this. My label back then didn't get it, but I'm glad they came around and let us proceed - and let me be me. The formula (for better or worse now) continues to be a staple in music as others have made it their own and excelled even further.
I doubt there are many modern DJ's that could add that scratching without over inking the cake and going wild on the crab. Eric compliments the song and keeps a nice rhythmic flow going without spoiling the track.
kids today are the product of all those crack heads of the late 80s early 90s, bunch of fucking idiots run the streets today looking at facebook pages...fuck I miss New York
'Friends.' Yeah right. NO SUCH THING. All my friends have tried to steal my boyfriend, lied, talked crap about me behind my back. Like I need that! There is no such thing as friends. They are STRANGERS who will F you over to get what they want. That's LIFE. If you believe otherwise, trust me, you will pay for it in the end!
Um I Still have this song on a 45 & on a cassette ... That's Right!!! I'm old school! We put the needle on the Records when the song beats go like this! Love You Jody!
@terr8nce22 No doubt!! This song along with the Chaka/Mellie Mel collabo paved the way for the so-called "Hip-Hop R&B genre. Nowadays r&b artists can't make a WHOLE cd without a rapper on it. It's getting played out. But I admit if I was a singer collaborating with a rap act, then I DEFINATELY would also choose Eric B&Rakim. That's a "No-brainer"! Jody knew what time it was. This is a good song by her,but Rakim stole the spotlight. After all they don't call him the" Microphone Fiend" 4nothing.
Their speaking the "gospel" in this song, U ARE YOUR OWN TRUE FRIEND. And god/allah is you best friend!!! Anyone can let you down in life, don't have to be a friend, can be a partner, family member(s), kids, etc. Be good to yourself:)
OK, everybody is saying how they have met FAKE friends. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU BEEN THAT PHONEY BOLOGNEY FRIEND. JUST REMEMBER YOU GET FRIED IN THE END WHEN YOU PRETEND TO BE.
have you ever been stabbed in the back yes I have by people i thought were my friends but just LIARS & BACKSTABBERS . steve austin said it best d.t.a DON'T TRUST ANYBODY.
Friends are supposed to be the ones that you can count on, but who hasn't been left hangin or turned their backs on? I can't really make out the lyrics, but it still makes you think. Didn't that other "Friends" song from the 70's say the same thing pretty much? Why is it such an issue???
Ron1972666 - dude - the truth! You think you have 'friends?' Sure. Nobody is your 'friend' when it comes to money or love. And if you think differently - good luck with that. You're going to get burned. Friends? No such thing.

This song came out in the summer of 1989 just when I was going through what she was talking about in the song!!!!! I always loved the rap line "bite the hand that feeds" because it reminded me of my cat!!! This song's feature of soul mixed with rap worked very well back during a time where mainstream r&b had rap in the bridges, long before rap was mainstream with soul laced throughout!!! See my next review at Ashford & Simpson "I'll Be there for you"
yes i totally agree with you.i believe she was the first to feature a rapper in a pop\r&b song. plus!....she had vougers in the video befor Madonna did her Vogue video.
Brilliance of a special time period captured in this song. You had something new and fresh in a time period that was exciting. The technological breakthroughs of music and film were exploding and new sounds were emerging. Quality wasn't compromised and the end result was a terrific classic track. Jody Watley most definitely broke new ground with a tailored Rap verse in this song. Go 1989.....go 80's.
What I like most about this track and Jody was the fact that she said she chose Rakim to rap on this because he was her favorite rapper at that time. Unlike today where many collaborations are done based on the current popularity of an artist rather than the true desire to work with an artist you think you would blend well with. this song shows the appreciation both artist have for each other. It works with this track.
Never ever would I let a person take advantage of the friends I love but when they see you got what they don't hell yeah they want it they didn't earn it all they got planned is how they can make what you got there extra action and mind you they give up no lead back so they never owe its on and paid in full.. the sad part is that it was not my doing they took your kindness for weakness and started a long life of nothing your way but lets see if I can not help you back on your feet whats not be
@Ron1972666 I know right I have to agree. Growing up as a child/ teen I used to think having friends was everything, but found out they can stab you in the back. Now that I"m 29 I learned you don't have to be around a bunch of people or have alot of friends to make you happy. That is why I have maybe like 1 or 2 people I can call a friend.
"Friends will let you down. Friends won't be around. When you need them most where are your friends?" "Jealousy and envy reign. Never wanna see you get ahead. They just hold you back." This song is so true. I mean I have been blessed to have so many real friends in my life, but I have also had my share of so-called "friends," who really just didn't care when times were tough - didn't show the love and support they should have, like I did for them, and tried to hold me back in a lot of ways.
Jody was all that mattered fashionwise in the 80s... she had influence like no other. I still to this day wear big hoop earrings because of her LOL! Absolutely the best.
I don't know how anyone can criticize this classic song..true lyrics and we have ALL experienced shit friends and great friends. Jody sings it from her heart.
under rated for sure. this WAS the first with the custom rap verses. the chaka and melle mel was just intro and supposedly a studio glitch which they kept. rakim tailored his rhyme to ms. watley's song acording to some recent hip hop history books. she was always ahead.
This is the first song that had the fusion of rap and r&b that 99% of listeners acknowledge that was the first of its kind. It still has the WOW factor!
I think Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You" that had the first rap/r&b fusion.I know it was old school but it is what it is. That being said this vid does rock.
I had forgotten this song even existed. I watched a shalamar documentary and decided to go to itunes and download some shalamar and jody and came across this GREAT old song. LOOK INTO jody's MAKEOVER cd, she's still wonderful.
Thiis wasn't the first time rap and r&b had been put together ( i think Melle Mel with Chaka Kahn " I feel for you " was) but it was the first time I think a singer reached out to a rap group for a song.( The producers snuck Melle Mel onto I feel for you) I always pictured New Edition smacking their heads saying "why didn't we do that ?"
Nearly 20 years after its realease the truth in Rakim's rhymes on this song still rings true.
This song was ahead of its time combining R&B with a rap interlude. Not too long after this song came out many songs both R&B and some rock had "remixs" with rap added to them.
We are the same age then, Im 31, I was 12 back in 89 too. Time flies, It seems like yesterday when I was listening to this song on my boom box lol, It's still da bomb in 2009. Song lyrics in this song is definitely a true story for me and made me see people in a different light.
It sure does, This song help you see how fake your so called friends could be, I had friends I grew up with as kids that I no longer talk too, Way to much drama. I got my own family now, I rather not deal with any friends.
I will never forget hearing this song by Jody Watley and when Rakim came in and spit his few bars of rymes I thought damm this dude flow is just sick ! MC god for real and that was some 20 years ago !
Jody Watley! 150 Jody Watley's! She is so beautiful and so talented...not 2mention one of the SEXXIEST women on this planet! Jody is a true queen! I love U Jody!!! Great song, timeless message! Rakim is totally awesome!!!
I tried but can't recall a r&B/hip-hop collabo before this. This is the first one I clearly remeber. One thing is for certain, this WAS definately the blueprint for all collabos to come. The format of the video and the song itself has been copied by every R&B/hip-hop collabo since.

@Ron1972666 friends have let me down & backstabbed me & told lies to assholes.
timothy32 1 year ago

Great lyrics.
Please do NOT suffer fools gladly for their friendship. They are seldom worth it and ALWAYS ends up costing you time that you can never get reclaim.

I don't know how anyone can criticize this classic song..true lyrics and we have ALL experienced shit friends and great friends. Jody sings it from her heart.

under rated for sure. this WAS the first with the custom rap verses. the chaka and melle mel was just intro and supposedly a studio glitch which they kept. rakim tailored his rhyme to ms. watley's song acording to some recent hip hop history books. she was always ahead.
the video is STILL FIRE. still a fan.

Another marker of great 90's era Hip-hop/R&B. I always thought this song was under rated.

This is the first song that had the fusion of rap and r&b that 99% of listeners acknowledge that was the first of its kind. It still has the WOW factor!
TheHillstreet 2 years ago

Far as i'm concerned... CLASSIC record
DarkBro71 2 years ago
This song was ahead of its time combining R&B with a rap interlude. Not too long after this song came out many songs both R&B and some rock had "remixs" with rap added to them.

Good old school tune, with some wisdom in there; as we mature, most of us learn what a true friend is and trim down the roster accordingly.

We are the same age then, Im 31, I was 12 back in 89 too. Time flies, It seems like yesterday when I was listening to this song on my boom box lol, It's still da bomb in 2009. Song lyrics in this song is definitely a true story for me and made me see people in a different light.

This song speaks to your soul...we all know lots of so called friends that were no good!
Grapewoman 3 years ago 2
It sure does, This song help you see how fake your so called friends could be, I had friends I grew up with as kids that I no longer talk too, Way to much drama. I got my own family now, I rather not deal with any friends.

YEP.. this was the first HIP HOP & R&B colabo
BGorgeous7 3 years ago
I tried but can't recall a r&B/hip-hop collabo before this. This is the first one I clearly remeber. One thing is for certain, this WAS definately the blueprint for all collabos to come. The format of the video and the song itself has been copied by every R&B/hip-hop collabo since.
