Thanks for posting this! The late Jim Healy, long time Los Angeles sportscaster, played this tape on his show when Lasorda managed the Dodgers for 20 years. It's even funnier with the bleeps added to it! =D
THIS IS ON A WEBPAGE which I need to look for because it identifies where this recording comes from. doesnt it make some of you mad when you hear things like this and you dont know where this come sfrom? isnt there video for this???
As a die hard Giant fan, and baseball fan, it took me a while to realize. I didnt really hate Dodger players or Coaches at all. What I hated, was" LOSING" to the Dodgers..Lasorda and the Dodgers are good for baseball. Love this taped rant!!....GO Giants!!!
@rockola63 I think so too - I had a tape of KMPC's retrospective on Healy where they played bits of the last show and I'm sure he played all the Lasorda tirades in their entirety.
I seriously wonder if this weren't the World Series and the Dodgers weren't already down in games would Lasorda still THAT pissed off at Doug Rau!? I'm actually on Lasorda's side on this one. Rau was being incredibly stubborn and arrogant despite the contrary.
This is amazing! How did this get recorded? Just awesome stuff. I always loved Lasorda. I do have to say that there's nothing unprofessional about Rau's behavior. He's simply a competitor talking to his manager and being perhaps a little defensive. And Tommy and Davey set him straight. That's all. I love it.
@casheasy I think the TV network had Lasorda miked for the game - no doubt this didn't make it onto the air but I'm sure the techs were recording the entire audio feed from here.
Baseball protocol is that when the manager comes to the mound with his hand out, you put the ball in his hand - gently - and walk off the mound. And not say a word.
I don't think Tommy was that upset about Rau not wanting to come out, and even respected his competitiveness. I'm not saying it was right for Rau to be resistant to being, but things like this happen way more often than people think. Maybe with fewer curses though.
@Wehategod I've met Tommy a few times. I bought hit rookie card when I was in high school in 1988 for $10 when it was selling for $50 and up. The card was in excellent condition.
We were penpals back then. I sent him the card and he signed it for me. I still have it. We stopped writing after I graduated and around the time his son died. Great guy!
My new book on the great 1978 Yankees team, The Greatest Comeback Ever, is the only book ever written by a fan, live-time on a great sports season. It's available at Amazon.
Brilliant! But as I hear it, it's not Lasorda to Lopes with: "That's great for you to be standing out here talking to me like that." Lopes comes out and seems to be telling Rau to knock it off because this should be handled in the office and this isn't the place for it. Then Lasorda says: "That's right." Then you hear Rau start explaining his side again. So it's Lasorda to *Rau* with that comment.
Damn right, carneyjeff. The whole dispute is clearly between Lasorda and Rau. Lopes is supporting his manager the whole time and letting Rau know that he's out of line and should handle himself more professionally. I'm a lifelong Giants fan, and this clip makes me love Lasorda for the leader that he was. This is a side of the guy that I never got exposed to while growing up hating the Dodgers. Gotta love that organ too. Before they started blasting all that garbage at pro sporting events.
You're one of about three (now) Giants' fans I have respect for. For some reason that number seems to be growing. As far as I'm concerned (and I've talked with baseball fans all over the country) Tommy should be (and I think he is) loved by fans of every team out there. He IS America's baseball ambassador.
After Lopes says his stuff to Rau, it appears that Rau says "you can't jump on me s---. You just f---ing senile that's all". That's when Lasorda says "Right. It's f---ing great for you to be standing out here talking to me like that."
Dave, you're simply wrong. That's not Rau who says "Don't jump on me..." That is Lopes talking to Rau. Lopes completes his sentence to Rau by saying "I'm just trying to avoid a scene out here." No one says anything about Lasorda's "senility." Try playing it again, and you might hear it correctly this time. The bottom line is that the entire problem is Rau. Lasorda and Lopes are trying to get him to act like a professional.
cardinal, I always thought Lopes came over when he saw that Lasorda and Rau were arguing and told them both to knock it off 'trying to avoid a scene out here' and then Lasorda said to Lopes - 'that's really great of you to be standing out here talking to me like that' (as if Lopes was out of line to scold Lasorda) then Rau and Lasorda went back to arguing.
Speaking of Yankees vs Dodgers, respectively both teams are looking at a WS run in 09 if they can keep up their paces, now..let's see a modern day rematch of these 2 epic teams...It will be the best and hottest WS to date, it'll help MLB considering their ratings sucked for the WS the past decade, The only WS match I would drop everything to watch is Yanks vs Dodgers, enough said, every other match up can eat it. (maybe a red sox vs dodgers one would be ok) It'll be Torre vs his old club ironic!
It'll be like Torre saying if he wins that is... "27th title? what title? I'm the only Joe that can bring it to town, too bad it's not with the bombers anymore." -Epic Pwnt
At 2:09 seconds he says we're down 2 games 1 one, that means it is Game 4. The game is being played at Dodger Stadium. Also, you'd hear Bob Sheppard as well. The PA announcer is not Bob Sheppard.
This game was at Dodger Stadium. It was the first year of my dad's season tickets and he was there. At the end you can hear the PA announcer with the rich voice that the Yankees never had. He also announced the Rams games. His name was John Ramsey and his voice is unmistakable.
Why would Rau argue when he gave up 3 straight hits? 2 out of the 3 hitters were lefties. Common baseball sense, if the pitcher has the platoon adavantage and blows it, then he should be out of the game. La Sorda was right. Rau should've shut his mouth up, and do what Davey Lopes said. The Dodgers had a fantastic rotation back in those days. It's sad to see antagaonism with such a great team. Unfortunately, that's part of the game at times.
This clip was extremely amusing. I enjoyed Tommy telling his pitcher he gave up hits to left handed hitters Rivers, Jackson and "that other fucking guy." It puts that pitching mound meeting in the movie "Bull Durham" to shame.
This video shows how the game has changed. There were like 4 lefthanded hitters in the Lineup against a tough lefty. You almost never see that these days.
From about 75 on Yeager was the primary starter, backed up by guys like jerry Grote and johnny Oates until Scoscia came along. I think Ferguson did come back for a little bit, but during the World Series I mostly remember Yeager. He was probably the best defensively among those guys.
I can't believe Yeager isn't saying something. He was known as a catcher who worked well with the pitchers. Maybe he decided to lent Tommy rant and rave for a while.
That's what the Dodgers need today...A manager that kicks ass to players that screw up. Where can I find this style of organ music? Today's MLB stadiums play stupid shit...
the guy who says "you guys are making a scene..." kind of has an accent. i'm not sure, but a friend of mine used to have the video of this w/audio and i'm pretty sure it's lopes. but i could be wrong.
He's actually saying it to Rau. After Rau and Lopes have their discussion, Rau says to Lasorda "you are f____ senile, that's all". That's when Lasorda says "it f____ great for you standing here talking to me like that".
Lopes is from East Providence, Rhode Island. More New England than New York. He makes a good point too. Save it for the clubhouse. Lasorda is a classic.
For years I always felt that was Ron Cey telling everyone that this looks bad and to talk about it behind closed doors. I thought that Davey Lopes was born in a Latin American country but saw that he was born and grew up in Rhode Island. If you listen closely it is an East Coast accent that intervenes on mound making me believe that it was Lopes. Classic Stuff here.
Absolutely CLASSIC! I love it. I was 12 when I saw this series. I'm from the Bronx so you know I loved this series. Lasorda is an "Pepper"! He's a cut from the old school. That's why he was a Dodger Manager for so long. He was the Joe Torre of that era. What a Manager. To bad we don't have guy's like that anymore expecially with these greedy ass bastards today! The game will never be the same anyway!
baseball was a game up until sometime in the early 90s, now it is just a business, everything is programmed, you wont see a player and manager care anymore like these guys cared
Modern day baseball players are basically business men pretending to be athletes(with very few exceptions)
I'm not sure who says "lopes doesn't want to get back, get the fuck back" at around 3:00 when they are deciding whether or not to play the infield in or back.
if you heard this w/o any context, or knowledge about who was speaking, you would guess that this is some dysfunctional, last place team, or maybe a minor league team. nope, it's a world series team.
Hey great work! I loved this game cause my favorite Yankee, Ron Guidry, was making his World Series debut and won. Yeah they took Rau out early, Rhoden did pitch well though in relief and even doubled off Guidry. Had no idea this conversation was going on on the mound. Would like to see the video portion of it. I guess Tommy was wearing a mike that day?
In the late 70's the Dodgers didn't have enough team speed and small ball play like the yankees had. The Dodgers had 4 30 HR hitters and a stud starting rotation. It's pretty on paper, but grinder ball always wins! Rivers, Chambliss, White, Randolph, and Munson set the table for Reggie and Nettles. No wonder the Yankees won in 77 and 78. They had LaSorda and his Dodgers bitching at each other.
holy crap my mom was at this game. still has the scorebook and 3 innings of scoring. tommy fuck off rau should have kicked ur goofy, stupid, fat fucking ass all over the place...manager...tommy shows how "great" a manager he is here. yankees kicked the shit out of him 2 years in a row. how...is Lasorda in the HOF and not Billy Martin...SHAME ON MLB AND SHAME ON ITS FANS
The only reason the Dodgers didn't win this WS is because Reggie Jackson cheated and stuck his fat ass out and knocked down the throw. MLB ought to be ashamed it let him get away with that bullshit. Lasorda is the greatest manager in the history of the game!
Actually that was the 1978 WS, this is the 1977 WS. Come on. That game in 78 was Game 4, it was the 6th inning and that little hip move allowed Munson to score and it was 3-2. Then Munson singled in the tying run in the 8th, and then they won in 12. The Yanks won Games 5 and 6 12-2 and 7-2. The Yanks deserved to win.
Absolutely hysterical. Great stuff. I'd also love to hear the tape of the Lasorda meltdown in the media room after Dave Kingman hit 3 home runs against the Dodgers. That one was classic too.
Thanks for posting this! The late Jim Healy, long time Los Angeles sportscaster, played this tape on his show when Lasorda managed the Dodgers for 20 years. It's even funnier with the bleeps added to it! =D

tommy's right! you give up hits to those you're supposed to get out (the lefties), in the world series... you gotta GO. don't bitch. pitch better.

I agree Rau had the platoon advantage and couldnn't get 3 lefies out. That's sucks! Tommy's right! "Sorry Dougie!"

Dodgers came back in '81 and kicked their ASS!!!

All of Lasorda's rants were heard for years on LA radio-Jim Healy's show- available all over the internet.

holy crap my mom was at this game. still has the scorebook and 3 innings of scoring. tommy fuck off rau should have kicked ur goofy, stupid, fat fucking ass all over the place...manager...tommy shows how "great" a manager he is here. yankees kicked the shit out of him 2 years in a row. how...is Lasorda in the HOF and not Billy Martin...SHAME ON MLB AND SHAME ON ITS FANS

When the organ plays in the background, it makes it even more hilarious. "You better shop around".

I see you already have the Kingman tirade in another Vlog. Awesome. Thanks!

Absolutely hysterical. Great stuff. I'd also love to hear the tape of the Lasorda meltdown in the media room after Dave Kingman hit 3 home runs against the Dodgers. That one was classic too.
