some people are stupid, in this game you can play with every faction you want, you play in all continents and its realistic, ETW you can only play with major factions and conquer 2% of brazil, america, etc

Play Total War games for the battles (diplomacy is buggy and uninteresting) and Paradox games for diplomacy. I play and enjoy both series very much. I've been playing Total War games since Shogun first came out, and was only recently introduced to EU3 and Vic2 (which I think are vastly superior to TW in terms of historicity and diplomatic roleplaying). Battles are where TW games hit their stride.

I have a slight grip with the game. Is it not possible to load up a save file while in-game? Say a colonization fails, you're then pretty much screwed for a year or so before you can generate enough cash. (obviously depends on your country. I'm having a bash of the Aztecs)

I mean, if i'm correct, you do not play the King of the nation you choose and you do not play the role of a general. so who are YOU (the player) supposed to be in this game?? some shady, unnamed person behind the nation manipulating events, or what?

@MustNotRead You are the supreme being that controls everything and anything political, economic, militaristic, religious, and social with regards to your chosen nation-state. You assume the role of the leader of the faction, and when that leader dies, you assume the role of his successor. Kinda like Total War, but much deeper.

@kennykyle133 Yep, if you advance the starting date it changes the countries to reflect that, and the game date goes up to the Napoleonic Wars - or World War 1 with the whole world mod, which I recommend.

I don't like the AI cheating in this game. For me it takes more than 3 months to conquer an enemy province and for the enemy it takes only a month even when my army is much larger

I don't want to say that the game is complicated, because this game is well organized. However, using your words, the strategy is DEEP. Number of choices may be overwhelming. If you expect combat and action, this is not the game for you! Only visuals: A map, words, and numbers.

For me, the juicy part of this game is after I stabilize my state. Ambitions for more power.

Knowing history/international relations can double the fun :D

the strategy is pretty much 100% in running your nation. as far as military goes it's basically cut and dry as far as whoever invests the most in the military will win militarily, but there's definitely numerous ways to play the game. you can't just declare war on whoever you want: there are consequences, and they're quite significant. you can only declare war if you have a good reason without suffering consequences on top of the negative aspects war brings.

I've played both the total war series and europa universalis III.

While both were good and all i find that there is more depth in EU III and also that i enjoy actually playing half-realtime instead of turnwise.

and this game got such a rich modding community, theres several mods that make a whole other game, so if you ever do pick this up for the love of god don't miss out on the mods.

I've played Empire on VH/VH and never once lost, in fact once you own an Island its impossible to lose the game because the AI is so terrible it cannot even perform a simple naval invasion. That's not a strategy game.

Besides certain islands are never hit if they own a sea (falklands) navies all you need to scare them off

Only cogs and flytes can transport troops ;). The other ships are for fighting only. And the ships have to be out of the harbour and than select the troops and right click teh cog/flyte. ^^

Dude stfu. I played over 500 games of ETW online, of the ranked games I played my record is 300-96.

The game is unfinished, buggy and badly balanced, the truth is they are still developing it. If you went to the same forums I did you would see that A TON of people are complaining about it.

Once they get about 4-5 patches out it will be better but right now it's a piece of crap. besides the campaign map doesn't come close to comparing to this.

Got the demo for this game and found it quite fun. Dunno why people are comparing it to total war games. This is VERY different (notice not inferior or superior, just different.) I think, judging by the limited demo, that this could be quite a good game.

I agree it's different, but I can understand the comparison - without the real-time strategy portion of the game Total War's strategic gameplay is similar - but has nowhere near the depth of EU3 - on the other hand, EU3's combat is nowhere near as visceral as TW.

That said, I wouldn't mind Creative Assembly taking a page from Paradox Interactive and actually learning a thing or two about what makes DECENT strategic AI. Total War's AI is about as sharp as a bowling ball.

i dont think u can make a new country. U can only be countries that existed in between 1453 and 1793. Any countries u try to create might not work, because U shape history.  Otherwise, i dont think anybody can help

I downloaded the demo, and the ships and such are just the flag of the country xD its really confusing. Do you actually see the battles? I battled some pirates by putting my ship-flag (lol) over the pirate flag and it said I won, very un-cool.
