@Grafight23 "Religion skeptic"... You mean atheist, don't you? And what he said is that the pharma lobby doesn't let other kinds of medicines to be explored. That isn't serious to you?
@ricardofuego I worked for a company which makes Homeopathic and herbal "remedies". They were allowed to do all the R&D they wanted, and they make millions selling placebos. There was some pressure from the FDA to make sure what they sold was at least safe, and they were not allowed to make unproven claims, but they were never forbidden to do business. Pharmaceutical companies have their own interests like everyone else, but there is no evidence of conspiracy.
"And what he said is that the pharma lobby doesn't let other kinds of medicines to be explored. "
he said far more than that. He said we've made no progress with cancer treatment. In reality our cancer survival rates are the BEST IN THE WORLD (see "Cancer Survival Rates Improving Across Europe, But Still Lagging Behind United States"), and have been improving consistently decade by decade.
And he just went downhill from there. He has no idea what he is talking about
Alternative medicine is complete and utter bullshit...the Garsson therapy (what most alternative medicine people want to be recognized as an alternative to chemo, aka consuming 12 glasses of fresh vegetable juice, several thousand times the recommended dose of vitamin c intravenously, raw food consumption and coffee enemas daily) actually leads to electrolytes imbalances and for those who went into remission post therapy, the cancer came back in 99% of the cases.
I like Maher but this is selective use of logic. Religious folks who believe in creationism in the face of scientific evidence to the contrary are idiots but people who are stupid enough to believe that water has memory are just sticking it to the government?!!
@BRaffertyable Well said! He's allowed to juxtapose compartmentalized rationality and irrationality in his mind, but Noble Prize-Winning scientists who believe in any kind of religion are nothing but bumbling idiots?
Stick to comedy, Maher. At least you know you're good at that.
Bill is unfortunately right. Florida has recently arrested Med School trained naturopaths for practicing in an unlicensed state on questionable charges.
Well, smart people can be selectively smart. He's real objective and fair when it comes to peta, but he goes full retard when it comes to homeschooling. He's just turning off his critical faculties because we wants to; he has an emotional stake in a certain point of view when it comes to "school".
those problems are worse in many non-western countries where preventive measures can't be distributed due to lack of money and infrastructure, or they rely on the assistance of western groups. That's why people in the US with diphtheria, typhoid, etc. are always immigrants or travelers
Also, it's pretty ironic that the American medical researchers that develop this "western medicine" are over-represented by immigrants educated in India, China, Pakistan, etc.
So glad Obama didn't go with the More Nuclear dumb ass right wing idea. / Take a look at Germany and you will see how solar and wind power can actually work, they are pulling down 12gw right now, and it's been growing about about 2 gw every year or so... to everyone who thinks Nukes is the way to go, please take a vacation in Japan and we won't have to hear from you anymore.
Japan is using outdated designs from the 1960s that don't have the modern safety systems which would have prevented the catastrophe. That is like saying since Pintos caught on fire in the 1970s, it means we shouldn't buy cars anymore.
In fact, the Japanese plant designs were already being criticized by the early 1970s for their lack of backup systems to prevent explosions and leaking, in the event of a failure
Okey this is one of the points were i dont agree with Bill maher. Healt care should not bee run with capitalism in my opinion, but Alternative medicine is Bullshit
Can alternate medicine cure infections better than penicillin? No. The only thing alternate medicine is really good at curing are weird chronic symptoms that people are probably just curing by themselves with a healthier lifestyle and a positive attitude.
If alternative "medicine" had any real effect, then double-blind experimental studies would show statistically significant improvement in health in the study group over the control group. They do not. The effect of alternative medicine is a placebo.
Look up hadron therapy, Bill. Progress is being made. Just because it isn't as fast as we'd like doesn't mean any jackass with some random herbs or a theory of positive energy flows should be listened to with any credulity.
The Pharma industry's faults are that it pushes worthless drugs that are unproven to work, all to make a cheap buck off of sick people.
This is EXACTLY what new-age "healers" do. They have the same faults: they both convince people to rely on an unproven, magical solution (be it a magic pill or a magic herb), and they throw science out the window.
The difference is that the Pharma industry has deeper pockets and more lobbyists. But holistic "healers" are simply Big Pharma's smaller cousin.
I have to disagree with Maher on this, holistic medicine is bullshit. It only gives emotional consoling if you want that go to your local priest or snake charmer, my taxes shouldn't pay for that
yeah alternative medicine is overall bullshit. i think maher is more in stiches with the fact that it's illegal than he is in favour of them. still dissapointed.
@carrotxdawg Its not illegal. Herb shops and direct-sell companies make millions every day selling homeopathic "remedies". There are reflexology and quiropractic "clinics" spread all over the US. The problem is that they are way overpriced considering they provide nothing but a placebo, and both private and public insurances don't want to pay for it. But If it where me I would also refuse to pay $50 for a tiny bottle of "shaken" water.
I believe Maher bought into the Autism-vaccine bullshit as well. I cringe when skeptic organizations around the country hand him an award on what seems to be a weekly basis.
@johnycannuk check out the documentary "Foodmatters." It sheds light on what he is talking about. Having been successfully treated in China for some ailments with alternative medicine(after numerous treatments with western medicine), I have to concede there are definite benefits to a holistic healing approach.
Doctors are under the control of the drug companies and patients are brainwashed. Doctors are trained to "cure" people with medicines but not to keep them healthy in the first place.
"we care, texas is a big economy".... -Proof that you are a money grubbing cocksucking capitalist that only sees value if theres a monetary value attached to it.
@MrChimpian - Wow Bill Maher and David Cross. Two of the very few americans that make people outside america still believe there's hope for that fascist theocracy, on either the left or the right.
Nuclear-powered electric plants are extremely carbon-heavy. To process plutonium or uranium into fuel requires energy, transporting fuel rods requires gasoline and/or diesel, construction equipment and dump trucks require their own fuel, etc.
Existing wind & solar facilities could power a modest expansion. The expanded network could then power a more ambitious expansion, etc., til we have an energy grid fed by limitless raw material.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with shoving mucus down your throat. It goes into your stomach and any bacteria would get destroyed in your pH 2 stomach.
actually your body is designed to swallow mucus if there is too much
I LOVE Bill Maher, so I'm very disappointed. The reason it's illegal to even suggest that someone with cancer use alternative medicine as opposed to chemotherapy, is because it's practically manslaughter. No, chemotherapy doesn't always save cancer patients, but 100% of cancer survivors received that treatment. If you get cancer are you going to go to a doctor who has the benefit of medical research, or a homeopathy clinic in the hopes of being cured by water?
bill can be smug sometimes, but I do like when he does his questioning routine/style, not because he's tryin to butt it, but to have the opposition really express their crazy/wrong views
Nuclear is not a good option, mainly because it's more expensive even than solar. Nuclear has been receiving huge government subsidies in various forms, many of them "hidden". Often the government will guarantee the securing of plants, which is necessary because they are prime terrorist targets; the government will also cover most of the dismantling of a plant as well as the disposal and storage of nuclear waste costs. These things cost a lot of money, but are not counted as subsidies.
nuclear energy is actually a very legitimate option. I know liberals and super environmentalists tend to shy away from it because most of the more left leaning conservatives want nuclear energy but it really should be done. it's only dangerous if it is neglected and produces ZERO carbon emissions. yes you get a radioactive pile of waste after a while but if its disposed of properly and monitored nuclear energy could last centuries
I do have a legit concern about universal health care. how will it affect drug research? all the money will go to paying for the drugs rather than research for maybe a cheaper or more effective drug. I am seriously wondering how drug research is effected
@DrNHand1994 Why? Drug companies make more money in Canada despite its universal healthcare system than in the US. Marketting, legal, liability, distribution, packaging, administration, battles with HMOs, etc. costs simply don't exist in Canada. Nearly half the cost of drugs in the US is advertising, another quarter is legal, etc. Canadians pay about half for their drugs and the drug companies still make more than selling the same amount in the US.
@musicalt Hate to say youre wrong....but youre totally fucking wrong, nuclear energy is definetly the cleanest of all the energy systems, except maybe solar. Its also the newest compared to fossil fuel energy because weve only been able to harness nuclear energy for around 60 years.
I lol'ed when bill dissed western medication, in fact there are many institutions at least in Europe (where I live) that regularly test these alternative methods. If they would ever prove to work for anything at all then we would forge them in too the western system. Might also add that the western system is not perfect, however the alternative system does not even work. what to chose hmmmmmmmmmmmm
North America lags greatly behind Europe in treatments that are at least proven effective in some cases, and when there is no alternative treatment that offers ANY results in North America, it doesnt make sense to not adopt these methods at least for the time being.
Its like saying 0% chance of recovery and 50% chance of recovery are the same thing.
@MultiUniv3rsal i actually tend to disagree with that, i've had acupuncture for chronic headaches and it actually worked. i didn't think it would work when i went in, but it did.
Let me explain again, i said i didn't think it would work when i started getting it, but for some reason it worked for me. Without expecting it to get better, you wouldn't experience a placebo effect.
@MikeyXSuicide somewhere along the way, while experiencing it, you changed your mind. Acupuncture has been researched and it is as effective as prayer. Meaning useless. And besides, there are studies in which people are told they are getting a placebo and experience an effect anyway. I'd rather light my money on fire just for the joy of seeing the flames than give it to some quack whom has nothing to back what he or she does except anecdotes from suckers like you.
@MultiUniv3rsal About the same success rate as White Americans actually learning from the American school system. Ignorant and proud of it. But at least you're kinda witty, even if it is anonymously and cowardly and totally pathetic. :) cheers
Maher is such a smug asshole. Seriously? You have a guest on the show and he doesn't get more than 3 lines? What, too busy having your 3 friends go down on you the entire time?
I mean I hate O'Reilly and Beck as much as anyone else, but this is just crap on the complete opposite spectrum.

Maher's seems to be under some confusion regarding the actual science of medicine and the problems between the pharma industry and its regulatory body. The close relationship between business and government is hardly new, and is certainly not restricted to the pharma industry alone (weapons are another notable example). Yet, this a political problem, not a scientific one. Alt med is based on belief systems and misinterpretations of science. I am disappointed that Maher didn't catch this.
@s3tione well, he DID say in one episode that he isn't a "big science guy." So I suppose he is just answering the question based on his understanding.
Plenty of nice Atheist men out there. You Heathens will enjoy my animated short "Religious fanatic tries to convert Atheist" on my channel. (Brace yourself)
Yeah, strange to seem him speak so incorrectly. Any "alternative" medicine that works quickly gets studied and patented and sold by the very pharma companies Bill is claiming suppresses them. While they're greedy corporations like any other, it's that greed that makes them actually pretty reliable in picking up on effective new approaches, because they can package and sell it. But, I mean, lot's of natural stuff became "mainstream" medicine (ASA, digoxin, etc), but it did so because it worked.
He's defending people with the integrity of faith healers fueled by nothing more than his hatred of the pharma companies (much like the moronic truthers, who he mocks). His hypocrisy on this topic reeks so bad i can smell it through my screen.
Wow, I've never seen Maher so wrong about something. There is no alternative and western medicine, there is medicine that works and crap that doesn't.
i see where bill is going on this...have you seen the laws around the food industry...look up Oprah and the beef industry. It seemed like a regular defamation case but there are literally food defamation laws on the books in many states. Where you can't actually "say" your opinion of particular foods in public.
I am sure there are laws protecting the drugs companies against things in order to protect their own interests...and profts.
@StigRossi you seem to have misread my comment. I stated maher's -often- right. Nowhere did I claim his argument valid in this case. Might do you some good to not invest such intense emotion in the opinion of some talking head you'll likely never even meet :) chillax.
Maher's point is exaggerated, but it's absolutely true that the focus on treating symptoms distracts from a broader emphasis on living healthily and preventing things like obesity, diabetes and cancer from occurring in the first place. Western medicine is useful for treating people who are sick, but the attitude of taking a pill or having a procedure done to solve every problem does not lead to good health.
THis is where Bill Maher is a complete whack job. Western medicine works...it has raised living standards and life expectancy for billions of peole, the places that practice 'alternative medicine' in the world have much lower life expectancy rates. Having said that, some alternative treatments, such as acupuncture, have worked for specific medical problems but acupuncture is becoming more and more mainstream
@jampt1989 The USA is currently ranked 38th in the world for life expectancy. I'm pretty sure that more than a few of the places ahead in the list use alternative medicine along with more "Western" procedures. Both have their place.
A bigger issue is why is the exorbitant US healthcare spending return such poor results, on average.
Bill Maher is completely wrong on healthcare. He wants people to use 'alternative' medicine? As soon as an alternative treatment is proven in double blind clinical trials, it ceases to be alternative and becomes medicine. Alternative medicines are unscientific nonsense and a con job. He believes in the scientific method when applied to religion and global warming (and I agree with him) and then throws it out for medicine. When he does this he is as bad as any teabagger denying evolution.
I respect Bill, but much of alternative medicine is a scam. It should be rigorously tested and peer-reviewed to be endorsed. Do your research, because alternative medicine is alternative for a reason. I agree, though, that 'holistic' is a good approach, meaning being more in tune with the mind and body. Stress can do incredible and damaging things to your body!
People need to listen to him when he's talking about the medicine..
Take for example people addicted to Heroin. Pharmaceutical companies get paid ridiculous amounts of money to treat them for their symptoms without curing their addiction. It makes their life manageable. Good right?
Wrong. There is a drug, and has been one for MANY years that will cure them in a matter of hours from a single dose. But you don't make money from such an efficient treatment.
why would they try to cure cancer.. they would lose so much money.. while cancer is out.. dr's and pharmacy companies will continue to make millions ipon millions by killing people with radiation.. people dont usually die from the Cancer, they usually die from the treatments..
bill mahr is a peice of shit, and sucks the left dick no matter what they say.. its so pathetic, Cross is the funniest mother fucker alive.. but his Politics blow shit.
I live in Maine and honestly I want my say, not to be taken over by all the Californians, new yorkers, mass holes and whoever has a bigger population. Just cause you want to pass your stupid energy bill doesn't mean you can completely disregard the smaller states by getting rid off the senate.
@acadapter44 That's right, everybody has to go to McDonald's for dinner because the baby wants to go to McDonalds. Just because we want to have grown-up food doesn't mean we can completely disregard the baby's wishes.
@Moniker180 This is exactly how the Patriots felt in the revolution. If we hadn't fought for our right to have equal representation you and I would be eating crumpets and drinking tea while saying our pledge of allegiance to the Union Jack. Here's an idea. You move to Maine and I'll move to wherever you live and then we can abolish the senate and you'll be stuck getting no representation. I'm sure you'd love to have no one care what you think. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the baby.
he's saying that her christian (given at birth) name must be "tamtam75" if she doesn't know about internet stuff (like the atheist dating service)...which she obviously does because she signed her question "tamtam75"...not "Tamera" or something. i lawled.
@sera7ares The person who wrote that question had the screen name of "tantan75". The panelists suggested "tantan75" hasn't heard of the internet, where she'd find lots of atheist guys. David Cross was pointing out she was already on the internet because she had a screen name... unless of course "tantan75" is her actual first name and she sent the question in via post or something. Welp, hope I thoroughly explained/ruined the joke for you!
@bigbowlowrong lol yeah it's kind of a lame joke :)) but i guess it's always like that, even if the joke is good, when somebody breaks it down for you, it's not funny at all...thanks anyways :)

he said far more than that.

Alternative medicine is complete and utter bullshit...the Garsson therapy (what most alternative medicine people want to be recognized as an alternative to chemo, aka consuming 12 glasses of fresh vegetable juice, several thousand times the recommended dose of vitamin c intravenously, raw food consumption and coffee enemas daily) actually leads to electrolytes imbalances and for those who went into remission post therapy, the cancer came back in 99% of the cases.

those problems are worse in many non-western countries where preventive measures can't be distributed due to lack of money and infrastructure, or they rely on the assistance of western groups. That's why people in the US with diphtheria, typhoid, etc. are always immigrants or travelers
Also, it's pretty ironic that the American medical researchers that develop this "western medicine" are over-represented by immigrants educated in India, China, Pakistan, etc.

@carrotxdawg Its not illegal. Herb shops and direct-sell companies make millions every day selling homeopathic "remedies". There are reflexology and quiropractic "clinics" spread all over the US.

These things cost a lot of money, but are not counted as subsidies.
miginaustria 11 months ago
nuclear energy is actually a very legitimate option.

DrNHand1994 1 year ago
@DrNHand1994 Why? Drug companies make more money in Canada despite its universal healthcare system than in the US. Marketting, legal, liability, distribution, packaging, administration, battles with HMOs, etc. costs simply don't exist in Canada. Nearly half the cost of drugs in the US is advertising, another quarter is legal, etc. Canadians pay about half for their drugs and the drug companies still make more than selling the same amount in the US.

North America lags greatly behind Europe in treatments that are at least proven effective in some cases, and when there is no alternative treatment that offers ANY results in North America, it doesnt make sense to not adopt these methods at least for the time being.

But, I mean, lot's of natural stuff became "mainstream" medicine (ASA, digoxin, etc), but it did so because it worked.

margestermeister 1 year ago
Maher's point is exaggerated, but it's absolutely true that the focus on treating symptoms distracts from a broader emphasis on living healthily and preventing things like obesity, diabetes and cancer from occurring in the first place. Western medicine is useful for treating people who are sick, but the attitude of taking a pill or having a procedure done to solve every problem does not lead to good health.
Margatroid 1 year ago
THis is where Bill Maher is a complete whack job. Western medicine works...it has raised living standards and life expectancy for billions of peole, the places that practice 'alternative medicine' in the world have much lower life expectancy rates. Having said that, some alternative treatments, such as acupuncture, have worked for specific medical problems but acupuncture is becoming more and more mainstream
jampt1989 1 year ago
@jampt1989 The USA is currently ranked 38th in the world for life expectancy. I'm pretty sure that more than a few of the places ahead in the list use alternative medicine along with more "Western" procedures. Both have their place.
A bigger issue is why is the exorbitant US healthcare spending return such poor results, on average.
