this is great, very rare to see him alone with an ac, didnt know he did this. I agree with others, it would be nice to see more like this, very interesting to see his ac technique.
He can do all kinds of technical stuff, but here, the lyrics are more important. I admire the nice strum and chord changes-no pick. Amazingly versatile!
When this Album and Song came out I wondered why no one played it on the radio..then I wondered why no one talked about it..and it wasnt a hit... this TV performance is more than amazing..this is the best song written in years by any artist.. ANY artist. yes, 10 years.
I watch this video and i wonder why this video doesn't have at least 1 million views. This is incredible.....mark knopfler is incredible.... God bless him!
Check out the notes in the final chord. An exact Cm7#5 (I think...!) and this from a guitarist who claims to dislike jazz!! Mark Knopfler is quite remarkable - the rhythm playing on this track is truly brilliant. Thanks for posting...
it can mean BS too. you receive the message depending on your attitude towards religion. sometimes writers leave the listener to chose the meaning they like.
its not about "salamy". Thats just used to represent something in the song.
I watched a video and Mark actually says that it refers to the food. It's about a group of black guys traveling around and the poverty and struggle they went through, hence "we don't eat in no white restaurant." and "baloney again".
I dont know the exactly who its refers to but i think its some famous group. Cant remember.
It means that they are relegated to eating Bologna (the sandwich meat) again, but also Baloney that's it's fucked up that they have to do so. I believe the song is about African Americans on the road doing shows.
I also think it's a double meaning. Baloney that the people have to eat and the idea that if something is baloney, it is stupid. The fact that they couldn't eat where they wanted and were not safe except in their car was baloney (or bull****)
i dont think exist published. It was played on a tv program in Spain, in concret in the region of Cataluña-Barcelona that was called " La Cosa Nostra", they were many artists around the few years that the programm was on air and with M.K was the first and only time that all tha audience was standing up. Was a special moment.
As difficult as it is to believe in 2007, I've got a new craving and respect for Bologna....I'm not sure what this means...maybe our past. To hell with prime rib! Beautiful, beautiful song...thanks Mark.
In his BBC Parkinson Show Interview, Knopfler says he read the story on the sleeve of an old Black Gospel Singer's Album how when they were travelling through the 'South' it was safer to sleep in the car and eat baloney than eat and sleep in a 'white' resturaunt!
No doubt, Byron. I've read that he was quite influenced by Randy Newman's technique of using faux-first-person narration, as a means to tell a story from a skewed viewpoint.
mk is a genious. and inspiring song, with beautiful lyrics and beautiful chords. his skill and honesty whilst playing has only increased in age! what a song
I'm pretty sure that's a Gibson B-25 he's playing... same kind Robert Johnson used to play back in the late 20's and early 30's. I used to have one. Gave it away like a damned fool. But the neck was kinda skinny at then end, by the nut. I wasn't that crazy about it, to be honest. MK sure makes it sound good, though.

bologne or boloney is similar to Spam however been American cold cut as in Ham is larger in round form not square as pam....
Bologney again is talking about a bologney sandwish....
