I love this commercial, I don't think that I can say that enough. I honestly thought it was a movie preview and I was actually looking forward to the movie and vaguely bummed that it was a VW commercial :)
@Jotto999 THat sounds like a personal problem because this commercial is objectively awesome. And you shouldn't go around bragging that you've never heard of famous bands and their famous songs.
@AlisionIsUnreal You believe you understand the mechanisms for music enjoyment? I very much doubt it. I'm sure anyone who doesn't share your taste must have something wrong with them, that's a common bias.
A search suggests the song is from 1978, which explains why I haven't heard it (I'm 21).
@Jotto999 I'm just teasing you, lighten up. :) You should probably assume that when someone calls something "objectively awesome" that they're joking, either way, you should laugh. And your age doesn't matter; I certainly didn't grow up with ELO and don't have some nostalgia bug for them, it's possible to like old things you haven't heard before. Honestly, I didn't recognize this song until I saw it in the VW commercial. They had a string of ads with awesome music (e.g. Light & Day).
@AlisionIsUnreal No, I cannot assume that, and it is better if people make that kind of joke more obvious, say with a smiley or something. I've encountered all manner of people on the internet, and what you said easily fits the actual opinions of some people. Some better advice would be me informing you that it is very difficult to infer tone and body language, the things that are usually indicators of jokes and such.
@bornwithoutwarning There was some article on there, where this song was briefly mentioned and linked to, and how the song induces a very joyful feeling (that's paraphrasing, can't remember the verbatim).
I remember seeing this commercial in a movie theater a loooong time ago, and fell in love with the song and commercial! Maybe it really is the song that made the commercial so good. lol
@bornwithoutwarning For real! Perfume ads used to try to be artsy but just ended up being ridiculous. They tried too hard to be appear to be "art," where as this one *is* art. It has cultural commentary, a story (the unrequited cross-the-street romance), a compelling character, and escape. This is perfect structurally. And unlike "weird" ads, I remembered it was VW, there have been others that stick because they're strange, but as soon as they're over I forget who it was.
thats awsome but i dont know what that has to do with the car... unless hes trying to afford it, otherwise, all that work he could afford like 5 of them by now.
tidbit: the zoom shot at 0:15 is actually 3 different shots stitched together. There is no way to get that zoom level from a single lens, so instead they did the shot with three different lenses then composited them into a single shot.

Cracked was wrong, I don't recognize this song at all, and it doesn't give me joy; I find it annoying.

@Jotto999 What does it have to do with this video? I felt that question was implied.

he's hiding away at work "for so long." then one day he sees a convertible VW bug, which equates to blue sky--literally and philosophically.
