Excuse me if I am being a bit thick but people go on about medicine helping to increase our life span beyond 25 years - is this antibiotics because this is the only real medicine i remember receiving as a kid!
@CalumnMcAulay We have learned what sort of proteins is good for you and whats dangerous and what things such as hygiene helps your immune system. etc theres more examples hope I answered your question.
We are approaching an era of abundance, hyper efficiency, and sustainability. This is around the corner and can happen now. However, our capitalistic system cannot survive with such goals like abundance, sustainability, and efficiency, which are enemies of our economic structure for they are inverse to the mechanics required to perpetuate consumption. Therefore, a more relevant system must be adopted to reflect the current capabilities and realities of man, with human concern at the forefront.
@silversobe That will happen regardless. Capitalism worked for so long because people want stuff. Now the stuff will be plentiful, this will change the mindset of people and their tolerances for bullshit will drop.
@trulynot you're a retard. capitalism is the only thing that worked because there are incentives to be innovative. If you aren't going to reward for doing crazy stuff day and night, then everyone would be just chillin out on the beach.
Larry Brilliant is a fascinating person - eradicating small pox, running Google.org, and now the Skoll Foundation Global Threats Fund. Check out his Wikipedia page, really interesting read.

Too full of themselves. It's no doubt an interesting conference, and Kurzweil's vision of the future makes it worth looking into. But planning to change the world should not be anyone's focus, partly because expectations can get in the way of self-honesty. Following one's specific passion should be the focus, and then the public can choose to use the fruits of your labors, or not.
Anyway, the students seem to be enjoying this immersion, and that's a good thing.
@DCWhatthe You are a complete fool if you seriously believe this. How would any problems get solved if we didn't have the courage to believe we can fix them? Imagine if everyone thought like you. We still wouldn't have airplanes and die of old age at 25 due to our lack of medicine.

@xneowolf Lols @ fckwit reply. I am pro capitalist - i am, however, an ethical capitalist not an oppurtunistic , unproductive greed based capitalist.
