@LanceHelmut Graham Nash and Allan Clarke were the secret weapon of the original Hollies. Nash simply took all that catalyst with him, travelling twice the speed of sound when the core of 'The Hollies, Ltd.' could not keep up. CSN, not necessarily Y, took up where the original Hollies left off. Anyone who came after him and Clarke is a wanna-be, including Sylvester. That this group hung on so long in the mighty wake of CSN is a credit to Allan Clarke
The way the original singles were mixed we didn't get to hear the drums that well. (They have been remastered and a great job was done, too.) But at point .58 in this video (and thanks to the nice stage mix) we get to appreciate the genius of drummer Bobby Elliot. He holds down the drum throne to this very day and I would dearly love to see him on stage. Based on his playing, I'll bet he has a background in jazz; kinda like Charlie Watts. And yes, Tony Hicks is great; but we knew that.
Can't get enough Tony Hicks~man is he an underrated rocker!!!!! Too bad he never sang lead on an entire song. He can play, he can sing....he's got it all baby!
@rwells47 -- Soooooo coool!!! Tony is top notch forever!!! However, I never saw a "Hollie" I didn't love! :-) They were/are all just amazing! :-)) Thanks for the share. Thanks, Fritz, for the live vid and Tony interview!
Great band and they can each sing alone and play good too they harmonize and Elliott is excellent drummer and Hicks' guitar make it all come together.
To the ruddy "mess" that you "Limeys" have made in the world music scene, I, as a bloody freaking "Yank"..........salute you, and the rich heritage that you-lot of indiscriminate bleedin' Tommies have thrust upon the "world". (Good Lord, I'm just having my "say" as a flamin' USA-born 66-year-old lover of old rock music, and "blast me", if one doesn't , just a bit, like Your Style.). cheers.
Gaga, Beiber, Cyrus etc all pawns for the music industrial complex. All contribute ZERO to enriching the music industry! Yes, they will make money however, they have Zero legacy value. Unlike The Beatles, Hollies and many others who created an era that had much originality, passion etc! Many people, even youngsters yearn for REAL music... like you hear on this video.
I love The Hollies. Up there with the Beatles, The Stones,The Kinks and The Who. The drummer was really something. Charismatic as well as technically very gifted.(He seems to be doing windmill drumming on this particular video)
As well as the obviously gifted lead singer, the group also benefited from gifted melodic guitarists such as Graham Nash (the early Johnny Marr).
This is just one of their great songs. There are so many. My favourite is 'Bus stop'. Listen to the melody on that one!
@raunchboy My best guess would be a Vox 'New Escort'. Wish there better shots of it on the video. Look it up on the Vox Showroom on the JMI (UK) Vox 1967 Guitar Catalog - Page 3. Cheers :)

A truly wonderful treat watching a great group doing a great song live. I know the dynamics are not balanced in terms of audio levels, but really, for me, it still captures the amazing flow of smoothness in harmonies & instrumentation. The Hollies were absolutely FANTASTIC !!!
tony hicks can sit on the end of my bed anytime and pluck my strings along the way :) jeez the man puts me in a different world when he plays :) lushness
Great drumming from Bobby Elliot. A powerful drummer indeed; but the difference is, he knows when to use it and when not to. A powerhouse tempered by cool restraint; unlike many other so-called 'best drummers' who seem to think that fastest/loudest/flashiest is the best....Wrong!....Take a few tips from Bobby! (IMO)
Too bad the mix on this is lacking. The drums and bass are drowning out the 2 guitars. But its still a treat to see any 60's act perform live since so many performances back then were lip synced. And the Hollies sounded great live.
I do not think that he deserves more praise then the rest of the band. Allan and Graham being great singers and Tony a gifted guitarist as well as composers. It's true however that In these live clips he stands out as being a natural and creative drummer with a talent for show !! It could very well be that Keith Moon was a fan of his?
Eric22: You're right. I should have said that I personally find the percussion the most musically inspiring aspect of this clip! Thanks for your reply.
I figured, but I had to point it out. I can't stand fans who say things without really knowing what they're talking about. I see that you do and I thank you for your correction.
I wonder: When a band gets inducted into the RRHOF, does every person that was ever a member at any time also get inducted too? Don't know how it works.
I meant 1981...Nash was on the TOTP reunion ...and so was Haydock...That's called a reunion...the catalyst for the tour. Haydock will be inducted as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow. Time will tell if I'm right, or you are.
I'm aware [As Ihave already stated] that Haydock was present at The TPTPs Reunion. I saw them on the1983 tour...it was pretty good. The resulting album was VERY disappointing to say the least.
As I said, I am very confident I'll be proven right as to Haydock's induction. Cheers.
Of course it was the catalyst...it was the first time they's been on a stage together in 13 years...anything else is simply conjecture on your part. Also, it IS the reunion I was referring to. Lastly, [And most importantly] I will be proven right...Eric will be a member of the R&R HOF. Cheers.
Hi Billo912: Just wanted to say, that this is the most perfect pop song ever written/performed. It has everything. Little Steven Van Zandt has played it many times on his "Underground Garage" radio show. I know very little about drumming, but Bobby Elliott is just fabulous. I watch this sometimes just to watch him! Cheers, from a British Invasion fanatic in Canada.
One thing i see is how (in these mid-sixties bands) the bass is always pumping giving a real raw sound. You can really hear each instrument individually, which sounds so good compared to later music.Just wonderful....
@littlequeen64 Yes, you hit on something, that I really took notice of a few weeks ago. How you could hear each instrument in the recordings of years past, and in todays music the instruments aren't distinguishable. I guess that's one of the big differences.
I always get a slightly melancholy feeling off of this song for some reason. I always thought it was a great song, but it connected with me in s strange way. Maybe it's the subject matter--a lone person on the outside of society looking in, but not a part of things....
Love this observation! These guys just had it all! Fantastic drummer, great guitarists, perfect harmony and Alan and his happy voice! Just the name of the band "The Hollies" makes me feel good. Hollies = Christmas = happy time of year (hopefully).
Is it just me, or has U-Tube gotten worse in the sense that it starts+stops, then starts+stops again and again. And yes, I know about letting it play for a bit, then back it up and re-start it. PLEASE...can anybody lend any advice?? I'm not dialup...I've got the satellite. This is ruining my U-Tube experience. Sorry to complain...but....HELP! Thanks...Joel in Tucson
One of my favorite songs of the 60s. Doesn`t Graham Nash look strikingly like George Harrison looking from the right side of the stage? Why are these guys not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame?
I see it as well. The RnR Hall is a joke and why David Bowie won't participate in it. Rock is about rebellion not a museum. They have also left out Alice Copper and then let in James Taylor. What on earth is rock n roll about James????
Such a great band.I loved the Hollies, i thought they were great.Interesting to hear Tont comment as well. Graham Gouldman sure is a prolific songwriter.
I believe this song was written by the great Graham Gouldman, who also wrote such 60's classics as Heartfull\ of Soul by The Yardbirds, No Milk Today by Herman's Hermits, Bus Stop by The Hollies, to name a few, and later became a member of 10cc with Eric Stewart who was in The Mindbenders. not too shabby!
The dancing...oy!

one of the best songs of the hollies, but the audience is a complete mess, awkward, embarrasing moves and stepping each other's shoes.

What I notice when I watch the audience's feet is just how PRETTY and feminine
the shoes were for girls back in the
1960s:very flattering. They were well-crafted then too, ALOT more sturdy than many women's shoes are nowadays.

Well Tony, you certainly succeeded in producing good quality songs that I, for one, will never forget or get tired of hearing.

My favorite Hollies song - and I love this live performance! Their talent and vocals overcome the venue.

David Bowie won't participate? Any particular reasons?

He indeed does look like George from that side.....

I've always thought Graham bore a strking resemblance to George. Two very handsome guys.
