I love this band!!!!! ive grown with them for the last ten years and they just keep getting better. To me Dustin is up there with Lennon,McCartney,Bob Dylan,Daniel Johns his just briliant !!!!
Does anyone know of any radio stations that play Thrice? I know nothing around me does and that makes me sad. They are so good. I don't see why they aren't more popular. Shittier band have seen more success and it confuses me.
@tompetuers i think thrice is signed to a independent label, thats what my drum teacher tould me, but if there independent they probully will not be on the radio, but they are still big
Listen, all bullshit aside - any sort of worldly distractions, anything "important" in our day and age, religion, science, anything. doesn't matter. Just because the man is Biblically literate does not make him the victim of flame wars regarding religion vs. science. Stop labeling thrice as this or that. I don't care if you're the pope or an atheist, a saint or a killer. Dustin's intentions have always been the same - make music to help people and preserve the hope of a decaying generation.
Religion only lasts (proven or not) as long as followers exist. However, I don't see how being christian makes any difference as to how much impact a song has on someone. People can have the same values in life not believing in any god or gods and still get the same meanings from anything.
@downtoawhisper they aren't labeled christian because the whole band doesnt have the same opinions or mindset of dustin. the reason they let dustin do what he wants is because he makes the words have meaning to anyone regardless of religion. though there are obvious christian references the songs he writes it for all to feel.
gettin a tattoo of a ship and underneith it says We'll Raise an Empire from the Bottom of the Sea. up my rib cage. soo worth the pain. my favorite song everrrr!!
2 things about this video annoy me though: I like the album version of the song better, where at the end of the song, there is not singing, because it feels more powerful.
2nd, why the heck is the sky blue in this video?! The song is RED Sky!
@IfWordsCouldSpeak I don't think it would be that hard to put a color tint on a music video....and the sky is not always blue, have you ever heard of a sunset?
@acejesse13 Yeah i know, lol Thats why like 20 seconds after i posted that comment i removed it, lol I was really tired last night, and not thinking very straight, lol :P
@acejesse13 I'm pretty sure you completely missed the point. It's metaphorical... Up to interpretation. It's not like because the song is titled "Red Sky" it's going to be about a sky that is red. There's more to the damn song than that
@kamikat447 black veil brides are definitely not heavy metal, and the only reason they have 10 million views on that video is because people want to see andy six. But I really like the original acoustic version of The Mortician's Daughter
I'm guessing this is not nearly how they came up with the song, but I'll throw it up there... In the Lord of the Rings, When Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli are walking, Legolas looks at the sky and says something like: A red sun rises, blood has been spilled this night.
This together with the old sailors quote pretty much means something bad happened or is about to happen...
No matter if you're into hardcore/death metal music... this is a soul-piercing song... i cant deny it.. its AWESOME... it has a unique touch that no other song from any band would have...
Red sky at morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, sailor's delight. I believe that is the old adage. "Can you see the sky turn red, as morning light breaks over me?" Someone is in trouble.
Hmm. That's a very good question. We're all in our belief of interpretation. I like how you say it's abstract. I never though of it as that. I belief it's going thru something bad but somehow at the end, you're able to overcome that obstacle. The Red Sky could mean overcome of something good.
Sailing lore says a red sky in the morning ("Can you see the sky turn red as morning's light breaks over me?") is an ominous sign.
I connect this song to the story of Agamemnon as told by Aeschylus in the Oresteia. Upon returning from Troy, his ship is stranded, and he sacrifices his daughter to the gods to receive favorable weather. When he reaches home, his unfaithful wife ("the wind's a cheating wife") murders him with a dagger ("thirsty knife"). Out of room, but there are more parallels.
Actually, most of Thrice's songs are literally about stories or scriptures from the Bible. For example...Of Dust of Nations, The Messenger, Like Moths to Flame, Silver Wings, Come all you weary, Firebreather, Music Box, Lullaby, In Exile...the list goes on and on. If a song of theirs isn't literally right out of the Bible, it at least has Christian ideals in the lyrics. They don't want to be labeled, but they definitely sing for God.
@ChristianSoldier24 Thrice is not a Christian band even though Dustin is a Christian mate, just remember saying things like that can start a heck storm on youtube x3. Its good you draw your own meanings from their songs though.
@ChristianSoldier24 its funny because dustin went out of his way to state that they are not a Christian band, but their lyrics are so blatently christian. JC rep
@fightingforlacy That's why they have references to norse, greek and other mythologies, totally christian bra we should get together in a circle and jam about how everything is christian ^-^
I assume that they just don't want to be labeled Christian so that are not limited to shows and airtime that they get. Just my opinion. But it is extremely clear that Dustin is inspired by God and His written word. Most all of his songs relate to it or are literally about it.
@ChristianSoldier24 christiansoldier takes the cake for gayest username. fuck christianity and all organized religion. and if any religion is right, which probably none of them are by now, it would be one of the oldest like hinduism.
@charger619c Then there are the dead religions that come and go and get dismissed as myths and legends (cough, the Greek gods). Not in my lifetime or my great great great grandchildren's lifetimes or whatever comes after that, but one day - Christianity, Islam, Friggin Scientology, bleh - WILL all recede into the depths of myth and legend.
@ChristianSoldier24 how do you think that? this song is about nothing to do with Jesus lol ... however it does talk about a man sailing into a storm predicting death (ie. doomsday metaphore) and I would see how it could relate to the soldier thing.
soldiers kill, christians kill, soldiers always need to feel high and mighty as do christians ( and other religions included), and because of both of them we are all headed straight to our own dooms day
word. you said it brother. im more of an underground rap listener. but since thrice plays and makes great music i listen. you are right but its up to the listener to draw their own conclusions from music. his was in the form of christianity.
They have changed their style quite a bit. Especially from "Illusion of Safety" and "Identity Crisis." But their last few albums display a wide variety of moods and tones...some songs are really chill, but others are still VERY intense. Their new CD "Beggars" is AMAZING...not that I expected anything less. With each new album they release they become more eclectic than before, showing their true talent. They are genius, in my opinion. Dustin also has his own albums...you should check them out :)
.......wow, you're an idiot, take time to actually look up their lyrics "paper tiger" "cold cash and colder hearts" even "under this killing moon" have such a deep meaning, you obviously wouldnt know how relevant these guys really are unless you took the time to pull your head out of your ass and actually listen, or hell just go and look up there lyrics
...relevant?! i really hope you were just kidding, because you've got to be a real dumbass to say that
well just becasue theres screaming in a song doesnt make it bad. if you listened to their old stuff, they still had many elements in their music that they have today, just with a little more emotion. plus dustins screaming is sick.
this song is really deep, thats what i tell my girlfirend when i hear dat song (besides that has something with penetration to do, kids (emo or hardcore) => DONT READ THE FOLLOWING ACCOMPLISHMENT) => I Fuck her and others hearing this song on HER ipod :-) It's a great song :-)
I like both Emery and Thrice but I think any comparison between them is pointless... they are so much different musically, lyrically, artistically, even the genre isn't the same... My opinion is that the best thing to do is to listen to them and feel amazed:) But of course sharing our opinion about _what_ is godd or bad in their works can be adequate and this way some kind of comparison might be interesting, i suppose.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I dissagree with dantothax.....just because they play different moods of music doesnt make them great....dont get me wrong they are good ...but if you really want a "greatest band of our generation" then you should look up emery ....they dont just write music to write it...they put so much emotion behind it and the lyrics are just amazing and they way they play their insturments is just Godly.....that my friend is the greatest band of our generation!
I'll agree with you that Emery is a good band, but just because they're good doesn't take away from the talent behind another band. Thrice is one of the most emotional bands that I've heard and Dustin is, in my opinion, a lyrical genius....he doesn't "write just to write," he writes for God, which gives his words an enormous amount of meaning.
Basically, the point is, just because one band is amazing, doesn't mean another isn't. They just have different ways of relating to their audience.
Well the whole band isn't Christian....but Dustin is, and many of his songs are inspired by this. If you listen to "Music Box," "Like Moths to Flame," "Moving Mountains," "Come All You Weary," "Digging my own Grave," "Image of the Invisible," and "Of Dust and Nations" you will hear what I'm talking about. There are many more that I feel are round about the same idea, but they aren't blatant in their meaning, and many are up for interpretation. But that mystery is the beauty of music :)
In fact, Dustin says he doesn't think, or even want, his lyrics to be taken religiously. He writes from a worldview perspective; from both sides of the line. Yes, many songs he's written show Biblical influence (i.e., Blanket of Ghost and Come All You Weary, which reference from St. Paul and Matthew, respectively) often; however, he's said he doesn't want it to be taken as "Oh, they're a Christian band!" He writes about so that his lyrics are accessible so everyone can take something from it.
No. None of their music is declared Christian. Although some Christian connections can be found in Dustins lyrics, it doesn't make them a Christian band. It's just Dustin's writing style. I'm not just saying that... because I really don't care whether they're christian or not. Theyre music is brilliant.
not true, dustin says he doesnt want thrice to be concitered christian its just from a worlds view on everything, it can be from a christian label because it has christain content, doesnt mean its a christian band
and beggars is derived from a philosopher, check out the thrice post mainly DK's, he put the books he read, much of which inspired beggars, most of it on philosphy
Thrice has a record deal with Vagrant, but Tooth & Nail would be a good fit for them. Or at least it would back when Frodus, Roadside Monument, and Pedro the Lion were with T&N.
Honestly Thrice has to be the best band of our generation. They have an album for every possible music mood you can ever be in and every song has an almost cinematic feeling to it. Incredibly talented gentlemen i must say.
i love thrice they are my favourite band i have listened to illusion probably about 400 times, i dont think much of this vid though too much dustin. amazing song though
wow, that's the biggest feeling i get from the whole album and the Water album as well! It's so eery, but alluring at the same time. Glad someone else thought this.
the reason their songs sound better despite not linking up is the fact they pause for effect, and build up to the bits they want to focus on more, e.g. the crescendo at 3:09 they do things like this very well, bettered only by trivium in this respect
this song right here is like a joint roller....it makes everything complete

Conspiring with the reef to sink our ship.
The wind's a cheating wife, her tongue a thirsty knife.
And she could take your life with one good kiss.
Can you see the sky turn red?
As morning's light breaks over me,
Know tonight we'll make our bed

I dissagree with dantothax.....just because they play different moods of music doesnt make them great....dont get me wrong they are good ...but if you really want a "greatest band of our generation" then you should look up emery ....they dont just write music to write it...they put so much emotion behind it and the lyrics are just amazing and they way they play their insturments is just Godly.....that my friend is the greatest band of our generation!
samzam69 2 years ago
I'll agree with you that Emery is a good band, but just because they're good doesn't take away from the talent behind another band. Thrice is one of the most emotional bands that I've heard and Dustin is, in my opinion, a lyrical genius....he doesn't "write just to write," he writes for God, which gives his words an enormous amount of meaning.
Basically, the point is, just because one band is amazing, doesn't mean another isn't. They just have different ways of relating to their audience.
downtoawhisper 2 years ago
oh no, thrice arent christian are they?
timsta88 2 years ago
Well the whole band isn't Christian....but Dustin is, and many of his songs are inspired by this. If you listen to "Music Box," "Like Moths to Flame," "Moving Mountains," "Come All You Weary," "Digging my own Grave," "Image of the Invisible," and "Of Dust and Nations" you will hear what I'm talking about. There are many more that I feel are round about the same idea, but they aren't blatant in their meaning, and many are up for interpretation. But that mystery is the beauty of music :)
downtoawhisper 2 years ago
cheers for the insight, i was kinda hoping they weren't, but at least there not the preachy type, anyway who cares they make amazing music
timsta88 2 years ago 2
In fact, Dustin says he doesn't think, or even want, his lyrics to be taken religiously. He writes from a worldview perspective; from both sides of the line. Yes, many songs he's written show Biblical influence (i.e., Blanket of Ghost and Come All You Weary, which reference from St. Paul and Matthew, respectively) often; however, he's said he doesn't want it to be taken as "Oh, they're a Christian band!" He writes about so that his lyrics are accessible so everyone can take something from it.

Dustin is, Thrice isn't.

Their new album (beggars) is considered a christian album. And They have a record deal with tooth and nail. (a christian record label)
JacobPaxton 2 years ago
No. None of their music is declared Christian. Although some Christian connections can be found in Dustins lyrics, it doesn't make them a Christian band. It's just Dustin's writing style. I'm not just saying that... because I really don't care whether they're christian or not. Theyre music is brilliant.
Murderface19 2 years ago 3
not true, dustin says he doesnt want thrice to be concitered christian its just from a worlds view on everything, it can be from a christian label because it has christain content, doesnt mean its a christian band
sk8erboy310 2 years ago 2
i thought they were on vagrant
ianmeister9 2 years ago
@JacobPaxton
since has vagrant been a christian label?
and beggars is derived from a philosopher, check out the thrice post mainly DK's, he put the books he read, much of which inspired beggars, most of it on philosphy
songcaller12 2 years ago
vagrant records
dannyrramirez 2 years ago
Thrice has a record deal with Vagrant, but Tooth & Nail would be a good fit for them. Or at least it would back when Frodus, Roadside Monument, and Pedro the Lion were with T&N.

Honestly Thrice has to be the best band of our generation. They have an album for every possible music mood you can ever be in and every song has an almost cinematic feeling to it. Incredibly talented gentlemen i must say.

I think they did that on purpose to accent the meaning of the song.
crazyfreak1919 2 years ago 2
Well having the sky in red would be rather cliche wouldn't it? Haha.

promathia1 2 years ago
as is proved my the entire water index, incidentally, dustin also really really likes bears
die7my7pingu7 2 years ago
he also likes lumber jacks, as demonstrated by his love of flannel shirts and bushy beards.
IcarianxComplex7 2 years ago 2
maybe he should start up "christian bear hugging lumberjacks by the sea foundation"

i could get into that. despite my inability to grow massive facial hair

The lyrics sound like they're inspired by Lovecraft. It makes me think of Cthulhu and R'lyeh.

wow, that's the biggest feeling i get from the whole album and the Water album as well! It's so eery, but alluring at the same time. Glad someone else thought this.

Does anyone know if this has anything to do with operation "Red Sky"? I know they are just talking about the sky being red right.. ha
GmansAssistant 2 years ago
operation red sky?
JTelli786 2 years ago
nope, dustin said in the vheissu notes that he dreamt of passing by the ocean, and it just built from there
SnuggleShinobi 2 years ago
the reason their songs sound better despite not linking up is the fact they pause for effect, and build up to the bits they want to focus on more, e.g. the crescendo at 3:09 they do things like this very well, bettered only by trivium in this respect
die7my7pingu7 2 years ago
You can see the passion in his face when he sings... so awesome... he is so blessed.
