  • So nice! I will get one of those old computers some day...

  • maybe type in 'ver' to get the version information...

  • can still go with internet ROFL! proof: youtube@com/watch?v=CMvFKDHh4WM

  • it sounds like like a spaceship! lol

  • ah, seems either I'm too old to remember or I learned my XT's parameters from the wrong person :)

  • Wasn't it 8086? As I remember, 8088 was a co-processor.

  • is that a b747 in disguise?

  • See, the top comments in this video are great. Because there is NO speech to write down... : /

  • That looks like the Model F keyboard.

  • It's alive! ALIVE!!!

  • Granada means Grenade in my language

  • @viciadoemhalo3

Well, you could do a lot of damage if you threw it at someone. :)

  • how many MB is the HD? 5? lol

  • @swoopingbird 20MB

  • C://dir Aquellos tiempos ....

  • i love when you turn it on, i was afraid it was going to explode or something.

  • wow dood how many ibm's do you have

  • f**kin love dat retro beast! :))))

  • CPU - 4.77mhz, that is faaaaaaaaaast!

  • Can you play Black Ops on it?

  • Those noises would scare the shif out of me xD

  • Why can't computers look cooll like this anymore?

  • And that story, my friends, is how Username93611 managed to get his first pc , an IBM 5160 XT PC, which is why he hates seeing the keyboard so much these days. Those memories, they still torment him to these days....

  • Thats a awesome well built keyboard that even if it were used to smashed Username93611 thick neanderthal skull in, it still wouldn't break. Thats how well built they are. Interesting fact: When IBM created the keyboard they tested all the prototypes by wedging it in Username93611's mouth and using it as a swing. Username93611s mom was paid $5 for the effort in bringing her child in which was more than she had made on any night. She used it to buy a new paper bag.

  • im gonna run osx tiger and imovie 11 and face book and play angry birds!!

  • before you start slinging insults. So many people prefer a well built keyboard. Incidentally, have you ever even USED a browning m2? Because I have, and they sound NOTHING alike. Quit being a bloody troll and find something productive to do with your life. Maybe actually look into some of the stuff you are running your mouth about.

  • with my modern computer. The keyboard for the 5150's and the 5160's (xt) had only 83 keys, and no gap between the main section and the numpad. The at version, which IS compatable with modern keyboards, uses a modified layout, shipped with the model 5170, was shortly replaced by the 'enhanced' or 'model m' keyboard, which IS much beloved by touch-typist 'snobs'. I use the rather rare 84 key model because I prefer the layout. So that makes me a snob among snobs. Point is, get your facts straight

  • @Username93611- If you know who makes an adapter to convert an xt keyboard to work with at scancodes, please, do share. From what I discovered when looking into the project, it would require using a microcontroller programmed to translate the older xt scancodes generated by the keyboard into the (slightly) more modern at scancodes still in use today. There ARE adapters to convert the 5-pin DIN plug into mini-din, aka the 6-pin ps/2 connector. I use one so that I may use my IBM AT 84-key keyboard

  • Give it a life,install windows 7 on it.

  • @zapper067 That's a stupid death if you ask me. Putting windows 7 on anything deliberately is sheer stupidity or absolute corruption, take your pick.

  • SOUNDS LIKE FORMULA 1 ON START UP

  • can i buy it off u?

  • You should sell that keyboard for megabucks to some touch typist snob.

  • @Username93611 This keyboard will only work on PC/XT class machines..

  • @howardrose

They sell adapters made specifically for the purpose of being able to use those old IBM keyboards, because certain touch typists love them so much.

  • @howardrose That's true. Most of the "original" IBM 8088 systems had circuitry built-in to the motherboard for using the keyboard, and also included BASIC in ROM (BASICA). Most of the clones (starting with the 8-10MHZ 80286 computers on out) from the late XT models (and early AT) didn't force the issue, had control circuitry built-in to the keyboard instead, but didn't have rom-basic and other things (GW-BASIC replaced BASICA).

I wonder if there are any vintage USB conversion devices though?

  • @howardrose Is the IBM on the right side a 5160 too?

  • @Username93611 your a dick these old keyboards like the XT/AT or the ps/2 from 87 and up are beast and built better then todays shit

  • @barf245

You meant "you're"... or "you are", idiot. And no. I'm not a dick. Apparently you're so much of a touch typing snob, that you're actually offended anyone prefers any other kind of keyboard than a 30 pound metal plate-laden thing that sounds like a Browning M2 when you pick up speed. Excuse me, moron... didn't know I had unintentionally insulted your mother. I'll have to remember not to leave the five bucks where you can see it next time I leave your place.

  • @Username93611 I'd buy that keyboard for sure... Those and the M-series IBM keyboards are simply the best keyboards I've ever used in my 20 years of computing... I want that 5160 too, mine broke 5 y

  • @SimpleKindOfMan604 5 years ago... I miss it.

Have I made it clear I'm a geek yet?

  • 640K?!?! You can play GTA IV on that thing!

  • soud like helicopter

  • I want that keyboard. Notice where the control key is.

    So much better than today.

  • With the time it took to count 640k, you don't want more than that :)

  • 0:25-0:35; F1 Starting up.

  • I'm amazed at how clean that thing is

  • GRANADA?

  • Wow, 640K, ten times that of the Commodore 64! Love those old machines!!

  • Actually, these things were released in 1983. I'm very picky about dates.

  • Modern!

  • I Love Old Computers.

  • Does it run Windows 7 :D

  • Wow turning it on sounds like turning on the Batmobile. Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed!

  • But... will it b...run crysis?

  • Hi I need one of these to run a really ancient spectrometer, anyone have an idea where I can get one?

    thanks

  • That computer starting sounds like it's rigged with a time bomb haha

  • my kaypro ii loads to this. lol good times.

  • 640K is enough for anybody.

  • @michaelboett173 well not today

  • my dryer spins faster than that hard drive! hahahaha!

    1600 rpm!

  • Mine beeps twice why

  • I noticed the "Current date is" line shows the year 99. Did this computer suffer from Y2K?

  • 640kB RAM? Windows 3.1 needs 1 Mb of RAM, It's very, very slow!

  • This monitor look like a microwave XD

  • that sure is retro

  • that monitor looks like an analog tv

  • This is my dream pc

  • i used to have this exact model...and it seemed fast when playing F19... wow I feel old.

  • Today we have Gigahertz processors and the system still needs the same time to boot :D

  • My calculator runs faster than this

  • beautiful computer. i love my XT. they all still seem to work like new too. let's see a new machine work in 25 years.

  • where can i find/buy this computer? on ebay?

  • @stroggowy666ppp why would you want it? There are much older computers out there that may be cheaper than this.

  • @MACK100001 he wants it because theres nothing quite like an IBM XT. i have one, as well as the predecessor model, the IBM 5150 PC.

  • The computer is called granada...I thought for a second it said Grandpa, which would be more suitable today.

  • The prompts on the computer screen reminded me of the computer monitors on the bridge of the Nostromo in the movie Alien.

  • config.sys and autoexec.bat Don't miss messing with those...

  • then you switch it to TURBO to double the speed to a whopping 12kHz....lol

  • I wanted to buy an IBM, but ended up with a clone. All the money from my news paper route, went to this computer

  • GRANADAA

  • rocket powered computer, WOW! Thumds up if you thought it will blow up after the starting noise!

  • My father had IBM XT with 10MB of harddrive. I vividly remember the sound of the floppy disk drive when reading my J-Bird disk. Since it were the times where TV was *real* home theatre, one stayed put in front of a screen until the show was over: I can still count till 640KB in 16KB steps.

The price for this machine was something about 9.000 Deutsch Marks, which is directly converted into Euros about 4500 and considering the inflation probalby something about 5500-6000 Euros nowadays.

  • i had computer with 4.x i believe and it worked well .

god knows it was a great system i loved .

  • It boots up and runs faster than Windows Vista.

  • ya know other then speed, there was nothing wrong with these computers, at the time they were the best of the best, I'd love to go back to the days when programs ran on DOS like print shop, the days where programs came on huge ass floppy disks, and printers used that paper that was always stuck together in one big roll

  • you should make this video: 1986 IBM XT booting to Windows 7

  • My first real home computer was an IBM PC XT. I originally had a Commodore 64 but it I never considered that a home computer. I remember using a DOS disk to boot up the IBM because the XT didnt come with a hard drive. All the software ran from 5 1/4" floppy disks. I used it primarily for word processing (printed stuff on a dot matrix printer). Brings back memories.

My next pc was a 386. Then I moved on to a 486. After that, a Pentium II 450MHZ. Now, I own a quad core 2.5 GHZ pc.

  • What did people use these computers for?? Just typing?? That's all it looks like you can do with it really..

  • oh the memories!!

  • The sounds brought back rushes of memories, the HD spinning up takes FOREVER!

  • Nice Granada branding!

  • It takes him more then 20 sec to run the memtest with 640 kb. I have 6 Gb of RAM right now, with that speed (and calculating with 22 sec) it would take 218.250 sec only to calc the memory, so 60 hours. :)

We had a 80286 around 1992 with 16 Mhz turbo, 40 Mb HDD, amber monochrome for 1300 Deutsche Mark, a quite high amount of money.

    Thanks for the video!

  • oh, i had the such pc case!

it was 1997, i installed 286 mainboard, hdd MFM "hard-card" and hgc.

then i found covox description and assembly something like covox.

well, at least it can play MOD in background of programming IDE.

  • I bought a 10 MB XT in 1983. With no monitor, it cost me $5,600. Funny thing is, it was worth every penny.

  • FLASHBACK!!! The XT was the first home computer my family and I ever had. My dad brought his home from work in about '89 or '90 when his company was phasing them out. Though our's took longer to boot up and a lot more text filled the screen in the process.

  • OMG this is the future!!11eleven

  • I got a Commodore PC-20-III which appears to be an XT. it still boots up but unfortunately the harddisk died. But I can use it witk a freedos boot disk.

  • with such outdated equipment...

Either, we can write new software for it, and find wifi-to-RS-232 adapters, or we can just fabricate a modern motherboard to take the form of this shell.

If only we could make some text-only versions of Facebook, we could resurrect old DOS computers as Facebook terminals.

  • Back in these days kiddies we had to TYPE out what we wanted to load and if you didn't know DOS you were SOL!

  • take good care of that, i wish that more old computers like that would still run properly today

  • hey guys this is a VERY COMPUTER

  • 8088 4.77MHz xD still awesome though

  • it looks like a tv

  • how silent were the computers from '86

  • Old computer lolz.....dam takes forever to load

  • omg lol..We had a computer just like that when I was little =)

  • nice. can it run crysis?

  • @vantageIIx crysis sucks

  • We need to get beck to real computer designs like this. Love the look. I am actually on the hunt for such a machine (locally).

  • What sze monitor is that?

  • Comment removed

  • awwwwwwww...... 640 kB RAM.....20 MB HDD......

  • lol we have a ibm just like this one in my school

someone changes the granada sign to granddad

  • @jakobat1994 my pop has a old mac with system 8 on it haha

  • lol we have one computer like this in our school.

some one changes the granada sign to granddad

  • That HDD sure takes a long time to spin up.

  • ohh!!

I used to do that. Write the "DIR" command

  • Wow, such a relic, such Value!

  • wow its funny how now we have portable hadhelds and phones that run friom 300mhz-1.8ghz and are so small u could fit like 30 of them in one ibm XT

  • Can you run the DOS shell on that?

  • I hope thereare still wuite a few lying around.... i,d like to find one of these

  • I think "the basics" includes more... like proper spelling etc.

  • Comment removed

  • if you go into command prompt. thats DOS. no graphics and its basicly commands

  • DOS Disk Operating System. OS that run off of a hard disk versus flash roms and solid state of the day.

  • If I had one of these, then my heart would be one whole. :D Freak the new PC's! The oldest OS I have is Windows 95.

  • classic ;)

  • Comment removed

  • haha Wow, when I first looked at the video I thought that blue sticker on the front said "GRANDMA". Then I looked closer and it read GRANADA. Oh well, GRANDMA would have been a pretty appropriate label!

  • @rhall4th Lol I also thought it was written Grandma at first XD

  • The museum called; They want their relic back!

  • Boot up fast than vista/7!

  • @calado2000 no shit its just DOS

  • I wonder whether it's possible to port DOS to other computers like the C64 or the Coleco Adam.

  • Yes, most computers had a standard adapter system by this time. At the time of the XT it was either S-100 bus or ISA. With a card for those specific computers, and some software you could.

  • actually, its not possible. C64 and the Coleco operates under a totally different routine system to be able to run MS-DOS, but if it was totally remade for those systems it could be done.

but then again Commodore and Coleco already got their own "DOS" OS.

  • Lol, Commodore and Coleco have totally different hardware to IBM PC. They are 8bit, IBM PC is 16bit and uses different CPU.

But for example IBM PC and MSX are compatible in some way. They using same filesystem, so they able to read and write each other's disks (not only floppies)

  • if it was TOTALLY remade, like a demo, it could theoretically be possible to "port" DOS to those computers..

but it wouldnt work as Mindman expect.

  • It sounds like a plane taking off but it's cool. Lol you could say landing now.....

    Cool.

    :)

  • Dear God! Haven't used one of those in quite a long time.

  • I wish I have a computer like that! Really classic.

  • nice specs

  • Monitor: 5 dollars

    CPU: 20 dollars

    Total value: PRICELESS !!!

  • @sloppiexx LOL You've got no clue what these sell for do you?

  • Wow. This reminds me of my old Windows 3.0 computer.

  • Wow!! This takes me back....

  • sounds like a plane taking off.

  • what was that other peice of shit next to it

  • Wish I still had my own one... at the age of 15 my parrents thought it got about time they cleaned up my room for me... got back from school to see my whole collection of computers was gone, except for one... a 386 clone, away was my IBM PC/XT, IBM PC/AT and IBM PS/2 model 30... was I pissed! Didn't talk to them both for over a week IIRC, now I think of it I still get pissed! lol

  • i love the sound when the computer starts drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lol

  • @Aqwert76 So do I. :-)

I kind of miss that sound from my old IBM that had Windows 98SE on it. I don't remember the model, but I do know that it was made in the late 1990s, and it had an AT motherboard.

  • @Aqwert76 That's the old MFM hard drive spinning up!

  • @Aqwert76...and if you listen carefully, it roars like a Ferrari 599!

  • @Aqwert76 that's the sound of the old hard drives, it's priceless really.

  • i just nerdgasmed :D

  • windows 2.03 on 2009 cmputer lol

  • i love the sound lol

  • I love the IBM PC/XT computer. The old computer never seem to fail. They might loose the disk, but thats an easy fix. And cleaning floppy heads is easy. A 30 year old computer that works fine, most break after 3 years now.

  • What about the Commodore vic-20

  • my computer is quite reliable, a couple of my hard drives are 5-6 years old, along with my power supply, and my motherboard is an earlier AMD AM2 style board that came out in 2006. i recently upgraded my processor to a x2 6000+, runs great.

i would agree if you buy a BIG BOX STORE computer, they are pure shit. the only way to get something decent now is to build your own. that way you have more choice over the quality of parts used.

  • I agree. All of my custom built PCs, even the 10 year old ones still function as if they were new. Disks fail every once in a while, may be the ram goes bad, but that usually has 4-5 years in between occurrences. My laptop failed after just 1.5 years of having it. My custom desktop if 5 years old and I works as good as the day I built it.

  • i dont allow my computer to fall to far out of date, so some of the components are newer. however i have a couple hard drives that are were manufactured in 2004 still in my machine, my motherboard dates back to 2006 and my power supply is a 2004 antec, works great. i built a pc for my stepfather it was put together in 2003 and works like a charm, but even thats going to get upgraded soon. if you build it yourself and use good components they get obsolete before they die

  • Nice!

... but why only type in "dir" and stop? Show us more. I've got to see what other people do with MS DOS.

  • GRANADA

  • Wow! 20 MB Hard Drive! Now THATS A LOT OF SPACE! I can use that to store all my writings and never worry about writing on paper again!

  • the start up sounds like a air raid siren

  • I love the way the lights in the house dim when you turn one of these on...

    im not kidding either XD

  • they cant possibly draw the same amount of power that a dual core or quad core system draws with multiple hard drives?

  • XT had a 130W power supply according to wikipedia, however, the lights did dim every time you turned the thing on (at least in our house), which was quite comical,,, however it never seemed to cause any problems with the computer or the other appliances,

the thing did freeze up from the Y2K bug however, and to fix it i just removed the battery from the clock board and set the date back to 1987, and it booted right up.

  • they do actually

  • Can it run Crysis??

  • lol +1

  • @elgavilan2000 crysis sucks

  • format c:

  • Very good!
