Disgraceful coverage. When it comes to Israel, there is no difference between Maddow and Glenn Beck. Might as well turn on Faux News; This is a fucking Joke.
Israel's army has outnumbered Arab armies for 60 years and they have had nuclear capability for over 40 years. They not only want war, they demand war. With America's aid they slaughter any resistance to their dominance.
come on rachel you can do better research than that, im a palestinian from gaza n i kno (or at least i hope) that if she knew the facts that report would sound just a liiiiiiiiiiiiittle different....ok maybe a LOT different.
I laughed out loud when Maddow said the US Govt calls Hamas a terrorist organization. The US is the largest terrorist organization on the planet, and have little right to label Hamas as anything.
Israel was created from the lands taken by the british during World War 1, which was at the time mostly muslim, there were some jews living there but they were peaceful, Israel came about after WW2 with an influx of hundreds of thousands of jews from europe. At the same time, the indenginous population was being driven out by violence. When Israel was recognized as a jewish state in 1948 an immediate war broke out, alot of muslims and jews died, more so on the muslim side.
There were other skirmishes and battles but none so earth shattering in 1967, the six day war, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon attacked Israel, Israel though somehow won this conflict and illegally seized the territories known as the gaza strip, the west bank, and the sinai penisula as well as the Golan heights. Ever since then its been under israeli occupation illegally under the geneva conventions.
MSNBC is without a doubt the most one sided, liberal loving group around. To continue to spew the lies about anything or one they don't agree is not media representation of the masses, but pure smut at best. Perhaps all media would be respected if they only reported the news, unslanted, for a change.
I too am extremely disappointed in Rachel on this one. I know that she has a lot of Jewish fans, and the pro-Israel lobby is incredibly strong in the US, so I'm sure she caved in to those forces. She's a Rhodes Scholar who reads voraciously, so I'm sure she knows better. But various commmentators have noted that she's a liberal -- not a leftist, communist, or anarchist. As the ol' song goes, "love me, love me, love me..."
Rachel Maddow, the smartest person on US TV, should know better. Israel occupied Palestinian territories in 1967. UN Resolution 242 calls for Israeli withdrawal. To omit either fact, and instead to speak of 'military entanglements', is to distort the truth. Yes, Israel is a tiny state surrounded by Arab countries, but it's not defenseless: it has nuclear weapons.
I'm no fan of whoever wants to destroy Israel, but the US media have a serious blind spot in this conflict.
Whats happening now is the first phase in a conscious shift to a strategy of OVERWHELMING response a philosophy espoused by rightist for nearly 2 decades now in this crisis. Its a highly effective and very simple approach. I would also say it will prove to be highly effective. Hamas doesnt want 10-20K dead Arabs in Gaza...nor does it want 100Kdead arabs in Gaza and the liquidation of Gaza's residual population. That is just what they will face if they continue on their violent rejectionist path.
Rejectionist? They only thing they are rejecting is their own genocide. Palestinians have every right to kill Israelis, just as you or I would in their situation.
she talks like she is a arabist middle east specialist come one give people back there country and land and dignity give them back there water and electricity if you want peace stop calling people terrorist hamas haves the right too defend his country give back there property
I was SO DISAPPOINTED N her perspective of the history of this conflict!!! This was the last episode I watched of this show.I am SO DONE w/ her/her show! The Israel/Palestine conflict is the new Litmus Test 4 the TRUE Left & the wannabes.
I mean, she completely left out the fact that neither the US, nor the EU, nor the UN, nor any other nation or international body has ever recognized the legitimacy of Israel's occupation of Palestinian land, and that Israel is in direct violation of repeated UN mandates calling on it to withdraw from those territories, or the fact that Israel has killed ten times as many innocent Palestinians as Hamas has killed innocent Israelis...
What a joke, good thing nobody watches this network.
A sad, sad demise of the last ideolog in the US. The closest an american can come to a REAL world european analyst have finally got cought up in the american media propaganda.
She is cocky reporter, religion to the Jews and muslims are avery important. I think she has no respect for religious people. Her Athiest attitude is obvious. The problem with religion is everyone is right and no one is ever wrong. Judiasm, Christionanity and Islam believe in the same God. Their belief in different prophets message is what makes them so different.
Rachael's getting a lot of flak in this comment section for leaving things out or reporting things inaccurately, but for a less-than-5-minute dirty wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am summary, I really didn't think it was that bad. Any discussion about that region that has to start with such basics as "This is where Israel is on the map," would take days to get through in complete detail.
This is a 5 minute news summary, not a documentary or a college class.
You have NO CLUE as to what you're talking about. Please look into the issue before you speak. She is flat out telling lies in this piece, lies of omission and commission.
Ah. So I take it you think you could summarize the entire history of conflict in the Gaza strip and between Israel and the Palestinians in 5 minutes without leaving anything out whatsoever or oversimplifying anything to any degree and pleasing both sides of the argument. Give me a fucking break.
Ok first of all forgive me for coming off confrontational in my last post. My point is not that it's an easy matter to summarize the history of the conflict in 5 minutes. My point is that she is flat out LYING about matters in this piece. Now I love(d) Rachel Maddow, but unfortunately like many on the left, she is of those who will not criticize Israel in any substantial way, and I find myself profoundly dissapointed by that fact. Look into the facts of the current crisis yourself.
I'm very interested to know what you think she's lying about. Especially since you mentioned yourself a minute ago "lies of omission and commission," which to me implies that you think she's being one-sided. Which, at least to me, is not the same as lying at all. Nothing in this piece, as far as I can tell, is an outright lie. There are a few things I agree are misnomers--"Israel declared its independence in 1948" for one thing, of course the Western powers created Israel after WWII.
pt2: The piece also assumes that Israel has a right to exist, and implies that countries who do not recognize that right are wrong, when a compelling argument could be made to the contrary. But Hamas is, in fact, recognized in most quarters as a terrorist organization, all the countries around Israel would like to see Israel gone, etc etc. None of her facts are outright lies. They do have a certain spin, but Maddow's show is editorial in all its content. You just don't agree with her.
Rachel! Rachel! Although I can sense some sarcasms here and there while you gave that presentation and you tried to be neutral, it was clear that you failed to tackle some of the real issues. I know you would have lost your job (and never find a new one) should you be brave enough to go through the history a little bit more thoroughly...and perhaps goes back before 1948, but if you don't wanna tackle the issue, then ignore it altogether.
Maddow knows nothing about this conflict. HAMAS ACCEPTED THE ARAB LEAGUE'S POSITION ON ISRAEL WHICH IS IN LINE WITH UN RESOLUTION 242!!! Hamas said that it may not like it but it will accept it.
She has officially proved to me that she is, indeed, a charlatan!
that was v disappointing to hear somebody who is supposed to be progressive, librel & who cares about oppresed people everywhere, do a 180 degrees when it comes to the plight of the palestenians, what a hypocrit
60 years of Misery & Ethnic-cleansing 6 wars 4 million Palestinian Refugees 3 million Occupied 1.5 million Abducted-hostages 254 km of an Apartheid- Wall 562 Humiliation-check-points 20K Political-prisoners 400 Children held in Israeli Dungeons 468,831 new settlers on an Occupied land Disappearance of Palestine 69- World Leader in UN Violations
This is a very poor presentation, how can you talk about the history of this conflict and start by talking about the right of Israel to exists, this would make the viewers think that Israel existed there all along and the Arabs denies their right to exists. Israel was forced to exist in 1949 and the Jews only justification was the Holocaust (which the Arabs has nothing to do with it) and that GOD gave them this land 5000 years ago!
This is a very inaccurate presentation. It leaves alot of very important matters out. For example the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians (over 400 Christian and Muslim villages destroyed), 2002 Arab Peace Initiative (still on the table) and the PLO's recognition of Israel over a decade before Israel recognized the "existence" of the Palestinian people.
neither side is willing to let anything go. and deep down i believe they each consider their own people rather more important than those on the other side (like all good patriots)
well, it has a little to do with religion, a lot to do with illegal taking of lands, and israel since they got the land taking measures far beyond the necessary to "safeguard" their new land.
The land israel is on was taken from the palestinians after WW2, though admittedly they were more like the indians then a country, so its ok, like when america was created.
Then israel decided to stretch its borders miles past the legal limit and occupy much of the neighboring peoples lands.
They could have simply kept their borders tight, learned tactical defense and not blind bombing, and worked in reparations to appease the neighbors who didnt ask for them.
Its bad enough that the muslims by their history disliked the jews as much as the christians did. They should never have been put there, but still, israel is as stubborn about going after peace as the palestinians are. Hamas will take time to get over the history that created it.
sorry I dont have a link, I know from reading all over. Its such a long history though.
I see a link by somebody else to another youtube video. I would definitely recommend trying wikipedia which is usually reliable, and reading multiple viewpoints, then putting yourself into the shoes of the middle easterners. How would you feel if your state was given to another group and you were kicked out, then had your life in the next state made hell because some of your fellow citizens faught back.
This land is called Israël since the geniuses from USA & England decided they didn't want the Jews to come in their country founded a... artificial state for them!
I hope you're being sarcastic. The Palestinians were the people who lived in Israel prior to it's creation. They were Muslims, Christians and Jews. Not nearly the racist state that replaced it.
Thank you. I love Rachel Maddow, but when she said Israel won it independence in the early 1948, I scratched my head because in reality after the Holocaust the European Jews and help raided Palestine, and re-named it Israel and has been a military occupation ever since. Rachel is usually a truth-teller so this is disappointing.
Agreed. It gets my dander up whenever I hear someone offering a synopsis of the Israeli/Arab conflict, and they somehow just "skip" the part about how the modern state of Israel was established in the first place. Poor form, Rachel.
Watch the award-winning documentary called Occupation 101 on youtube Part 1 - 11 or see occupation101dotcom. Its the best doc on the subject I have ever seen. Part 3 depicts the root cause of the conflict and when and how it started.
I too am disappointed in this extreme misrepresentation of the history of Israel. Almost every point she makes is a complete misrepresentation. It is not two sides fighting it out, and Israel may be small in land area but it is so well supplied by the US with military technology that it has become an extreme aggressor in the region. It's a shame that Maddow can't or won't see beyond the typical US view of the region's politics. The rest of the world knows better.
I'm really disappointed by this piece. It seems she was forced to read some script. I expected better and unbiased presentation from Rachel. Well, I was wrong.
How appalling! The world looks at Israel with disgust. No body is buying the propaganda of Israel officials. After years of illegal apartheid occupation and building illegal settlements on Palestinian lands, Israel is regarded as the hypocrite of the world -very shameful indeed. I am neither a Muslim nor an Arab, but a human being that can recognize injustice and desperation. It's disheartening to see all this hypocrisy and bloodshed. I wish all the Palestinians peace, patience and justice.
@sisyevmasis - interesting comment. so you could you please elaborate, from a legal perspective, the Palestinian Mandate and division of land, Trans Jordan' involvement controlling the west bank... United resolution 181, and Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, and iraq, all being ratified legal countries by a legally recognized international body called the United nations where a 2/3 vote is required?? I am certain you understand that Israel did not invade any land and 80% of jordan is palestine
