First saw this clip in Johnny B. Goode. Only learned later that the guy who said "this movie is $h!+" was the director of the movie he is critcizing and the father of Robert Downey Jr. The other inside joke from this movie is that Downey plays a character named Floyd Gandoli. Floyd Gandoli is also the name of Phillip Baker Hall's character in Boogie Nights which also features Bob Downey as the recording studio owner. Bob Downey was a family friend of P.T. Anderson. "Thats a YP not an MP."
@MrBurgis8 - wow i love everything about this post. Another link between these two amazing films is in the ending scene of Boogie Nights where the asian houseboy is throwing fire crackers and freaking out Reed Rothchild in the coke dealers house. Clearly an homage to the Chinese guy in PS throwing firecrackers in the lobby of the Truth and Soul offices.
I saw this commercial from the film "Putney Swope" back when I was twelve years old. The film was wild and funny. I had attended a birthday party for one of my 1969 sleep away camp friends in Long Island City, in Queens, New York. This unusual commercial was featured on the local eleven o'clock news about two weeks before I saw this film. I have not seen this crazy film in over thirty years ! Thankyou Theseamstress !
@headley62 Sociophobe is a way of describing people who are afraid of interacting with society. In the context of discussing this video, it could refer to people who are afraid of an integrated and diverse American society.
Yes. Sociophobe is actually a symtom of mental illness. A lot of schizoprenics have a sort of social phobia sometimes.Has nothing to do with political parties whatsoever.
Shelley Plimpton, okay, thank you. I didn't hear that till now. Saw it on TCM recently, almost fell off the chair when this part came out of nowhere.
Something that only could have come from the '60's. Close to a Jules Feiffer 'toon come to half-life. Not exactly brilliant, yet essential in it's way.
Thanks, farleytube! I'm glad to read some sanity. Some of the people who write this shit on Youtube seem as though they have spent the last 15 years in their parents' basement, listening to Merle Haggard and watching endless bouts of reality t.v.
Best...movie trailer...ever! Just saw this on the 42nd Street Forever dvd and was SO hoping to find it here. Fantastic. Thanks for posting. Now I have to watch the movie.
I just saw this one the Alamo Drafthosue edition of the 42nd Street Forever series. I was totally baffled by what I saw and, especially, heard. What makes it more fucked up is that the girl is actually kind of cute and the two are actually decent singers.
I saw this movie when it came out and I think of it almost daily (especially the Borman Six Girl). It was pure genius. I have the movie poster in the entry way to the kitchen. A black & white image of a man's fist with a dancing woman as the middle finger, with the tag line, "Up Madison Avenue."
I saw Putney Swope when it came out in the early 70s. I forgot how pitch-perfect this "commercial" was. During this time, Madison Ave. was trying to cash-in on the flower child movement, and we were subjected to gauzy, syrupy commercials with long-haired models running in fields.
Putney Swope is a real movie. It's about a guy at an advertising agency. This clip is just like a parody of TV commercials for OTC acne medications. The film was written and directed by Robert Downey Sr. Perhaps you've heard of his son?
This is hilarious, I seen it first on the Drive-In screen in the movie Johnny B. Good with Anthony Michale Hall. I didn't know all the history about it, I just always remember, "girl i saw your beaver flash, I'll never be the same..." LOL!!!!!!!!
Seriously, I picked "Putney Swope" up vhs format like 15 years ago for a dollar, was blown away by it. Loaned it to a friend who never gave it back. Was so glad to find this. (and "you can't eat air conditioning..." etc. Wish I could find the "ethereal cereal bit."
This song has remained in my mind for 40 years. Thank you for uploading it. Putney Swope was a special movie of the 60s. It reminds me of a bygone era.
ha...funny because this song has ALWAYS stayed in my mind (i forget about that first line about dry-humping and beavers...!)...but it's hilarious because it SOUNDS so SWEET...i don't know HOW the two managed to sing it without laughing (must have been lots of takes!) going to introduce it to my husband now!...
I absolutely love the film Putney Swope, I first saw it in college during a History of Black Film course - that was back in the early 80s. I absolutley love it and wish to see more scenes on YouTube. This clip has stayed in my mind all these years and it was a real treat to actually see it again .
These comments are hilariously ignorant. This is a scene from a satirical movie, you idiots. Stop thinking films like "White Chicks" and "Madea's Family Reunion" are the height of cinema and explore film. Also, listen to the lyrics. It's a pimple-remover commercial, not some kind of propaganda for you sociophobes to fear.
This is one of my favorite films from the 60s. As a matter of fact it was shown as a representative film of the sixties back when I was in college in one of my film classes. The whole film is fantastic. It was a time when filmmakers were experiemnting .Lots of richness from the sixties. Plus, this clip ALWAYS just cracks me up. The humor mixed with such serious music ! LOL !~ Fan of Sixties Films !
The movie is about an advertising agency that votes a lowly middle-management executive Putney Swope to be in charge, who then brings "truth and soul" to advertising. This video is the commercial for Face Off pimple cream, so yes there are a few commercials in the movie like this.
Why do you want them to go back to Africa... didn't you guys (i.e., hockey lovin', velveeta eatin', trailer park livin' honkeys) bring them over in the first place?
oh shut up pls...i dono wots wrong wid those ppl like u...racist ass holes, who still live in 18th century...we r not guilty tht ur brain is still there,so pls look at reality and ull see more and more interracial...so if u dont like it why u watch those vids anyhow????u cant do anythin abt it so SHUT THE FUCK UP!
I have been looking for this since 1995. We were drinking beers back in college and this "beaver flash" clip came up when we were talking about the movie "Johnny Be Good" with Anthony Michael Hall. This film was playing on the screen in the background during "Johnny Be Good" when Anthony Michael Hall and Uma Thurman were sitting on the swing set at the drive-in theater and talking to each other about Johnny's college plans.
Proof positive that YouTube is a great outlet for the undeservedly obscure. "Putney Swope" is the greatest advertising movie ever made! It was directed by Robert Downey Senior. I believe that a clip of this ended up in the drive-in scene of a Robert Downey Jr. flick. The sound clip that opens my posted video goodies is actually from this film.
A great film that touched on a lot of social issues . For anyone who is a student of advertising or in the job field this is a must movie. Independent film makers should also take some tips form this movie.
Thumbs up if you think this is just weird and don't know how you got here...
