How do you know the system is working? You're betting your life on it after all. I mean, is there a flow detector at the outboard weep-hole, left and right, wings and tail? How else do you know that the stystem is "being all that it can be"? Again, you're betting your life on it. It would be easier to detect whether an electric system is working. Master caution could be generated easier with an electric system. What is the benefit of liquid over electric?
@cff121 : Pam cooking spray. Spray the leading edge before you go fly. The bugs are less likely to stick. It's a crude solution, and collects grime if it's not washed regularly, but it seems to work.
Just for everyones info, TKS is an ANTI-ice system, not de-ice. You must be proactive with it otherwise you're screwed.
One major problem that I see with the TKS (and it would be particularly vexing when flying the aircraft at low altitudes during the warmer months) is that the pores along the LE would constantly be clogged with dead bugs and this would either damage or degrade the weeping effect. If there are any pilots with TKS equipped planes out there, tell me, how do you solve this problem?
Thermawing is a great technology and it seems like it's the way of the future, but right now it's not FIKI certified which is a big reason why people dont want to install it on their aircraft.
Same price, reliable electric 140 degree heat or fluid that leaks all year around, must be constantly purged to keep the pores clear and you must remember to fill the tank all the time. I will go with Thermawing, oh and it works, just had it installed on our plane and was in Moderate Mixed over Dayton, kept the plane ice free....
Flying a small plane in ice you are always betting your life on it even with a flying into known ice system.
If I'm in ice the TKS system is on and I am working with ATC to get out of the icing condition.

@columbia400driver I'm sure it's for the inevitable or unknown.

Dream plane, right there. Also, is there any real difference between a 2011 compared to say a 2007?

Maybe slower.... The clean design won't perform better with additional weight.

Tell me, have you seen any reduction in airspeed after installing the TKS system on your aircraft?

@cff121 It's about 7 knots true at the high end.
