was that part starting at around 7 minutes all improv, or was it written as part of the music? i'm considering playing this for my high school senior recital.

It's a beautiful recitalpiece I can seriously recommend. That part, the 'Cadenza' is all written out. In classical tradition you could also improvise your own Cadenza, but in my opinion these notes mr. Reed wrote are way too beautiful to disregard..
