  • Looks like he has a little 'moment' @ 2:25 ... just as he unlocks his left hand. Bet that got the juices flowing.

  • I can do that, hold my beer.

  • top!

  • man when i was camping and found myself near the edge of a cliff i was nervous as hell !! and this guy does it for fun !!

  • All that's left is for Dean Potter to free solo the infamous Cobra Crack! XD

  • @Purrr350 That would be plain stupid, due to the difficulty of that climb.

  • Balls the size of watermelons

  • "You're still a wizard Harry Potter . . ." ---- oops! Wait, I mean DEAN Potter . . . You're still a wizard Dean Potter.

  • @kuankung8 hahaha

  • I'd say hes taking a very calculated risk, at that height he would hafta to land pretty bad to die, otherwise he'd live through it with several broken bones, which would ruin his career.

  • @metalfire55 Watch his other videos, like where he takes a 'calculated risk' to free solo climb up a vertical 350 foot wall.

  • He was the stunt double for Spider-Man 3.

  • Alright, two things that do not make sense to me: first his palms are all taped up, so why does he keep putting chalk on them, is the tape sweating? Second, I thought that the tape is there to protect your skin in case you fall... In this case I do not think this measure of precaution would be effective

  • @huyos The chalk is there to create friction, not necessarily to avoid sweating, also after a point in climbing, chalking up becomes almost a ritual even when unnecessary, though if YOU were climbing without a rope over a drop, wouldn't you want to be sure you were getting the best connection possible? Also, the tape is NOT to protect your skin incase of a fall, but just general protection. Crack climbing requires a great deal of friction and so the tape avoids the scrapes that come from it.

  • Please do not tell me what I do and do not understand. its really very patronising and rude. I have said my piece. please don't reply.

    cheers

  • I can't lie. My heart is pounding just sitting at my computer. I have dreamed of such things and I was terrified, This man is living it. I would love to mountain climb but I'm not that flexible so this may be just a dream for me. One day with lots of yoga and the right mind state maybe I can do something like this. This man is a god.

  • You go, monkey boy!

  • in two words dean is the best!!!

  • was the camera man on a goddamn jetpack or something?

  • What's most important in life? Getting a high? If you got that high, you want an even better one? This guy started climbing a tree or a house before all this. It grew into something like this and on the way he chose to go on and take it every step further. He lost track of any sence of life that told him there's a good life with the high of risking your life at any cost, but only for life itself. And that's helping those who are in need of protection, food, health etc. Climbing is not life!

  • @Reggylator You don't understand, because you are not a climber.

  • @BeepimajeepBeep I don't need to understand all the personal problems of an alcoholic to understand that his drinking kills him. I'm not judging the person, but the behaviour. I'm just pointing out that any big chance of risking your life must be 'doing' something that's in perspective.

  • @Reggylator Alcohol kills people no matter what. alot of people live long happy lives climbing.

  • @BeepimajeepBeep Haha....a lot of alcoholics live long too......unlimited access to cliffs and climbing without safety / riskmanagement kills for sure too......a little alcohol makes you dizzy and could kill you behind the wheel...a little slip of the finger climbing high kills you. This is not about alcohol or climbing. It's about seeing what your life is really worth. It's not worth dying in a fall climbing if you can prevent it.

  • @Reggylator Not worth it? You obviously have no clue what these climbers think about. People who don't free solo can't comprehend what goes through these guys' minds, unless you have actually free soloed.

Is it worth staying safe your whole life, and not enjoy it at all?

  • @BeepimajeepBeep If you read what I say....you see I don't dissaprove on joy through kicks with risks. I'm pointing out I believe that getting a kick with substantial risk of dying is a waste of life. For instance...I'd bungee, but not in some poor country where facilities are poor and most accidents happen. Let me understand you: to what length do you believe (moral) a risk for injury or life is acceptable?

  • @Reggylator with bungee jumping you are not in control, the rope is in control. With free soloing, YOU are in control. Dean Potter is highly trained in climbing. I think any risk is just fine, as long as you are in control. You are not injuring anyone else, so there is nothing morally wrong about it.

  • @BeepimajeepBeep Control in climbing is far less than bungeejumping cause you not only have the equipment you need to rely on, you also have the skills (even the best make mistakes) and the onforseen circumstances like rocks breaking, tough winds, cramp, etc. The proof is by deathnumbers between climbers and bungeejumpers. Climbers die far more!

    Let's end this....I'm done discussing.

  • @BeepimajeepBeep

that's ridiculous. I love climbing. but i also like living through the experience. you don't have to free climb to enjoy life. that's just bizarre.

This guy has amazing talent but not much in the old noggin I'm afraid.

  • @Jack5964 You can't judge someones smarts based off a perception created by society as a whole... Dean Potter is one of the smartest people I have seen, and he is still living a long life doing what he enjoys best... while you sit all day at a boring job?

  • @BeepimajeepBeep

And you know what I do, do you. Just like you know Dean potter personally :-D.

dude its simple. it doesn't matter how talented you are. everyone makes mistakes eventually and when he does he is going to come to a nasty end. next time I make a mistake on the wall (sports climber) ill probably fall a few meters and scrape my knee.

I like the rush like any climber. but I don't need inject a real and significant chance of death into the mix to enjoy myself.

    cheers

  • @Jack5964 I dont know him personally. Regular climbers like yourself can't comprehend the complex nature of what he does. It's impossible for you to perceive.

  • @Jack5964 I guess that's the crazy thing....I heard a quote from him and he said that freesoloing or tightroping with no safety gear is the only way he can make his focus 100%......You're right, one mistake or even something that he doesn't do wrong (like a rock from above falling on him) could end his life. I think these guys should all use safety gear as well as I don't think it's worth their life.....it's his life, though....

  • Free soloing something like that just isn't worth the risk.

  • @pacifiedfools

you dont know what it means to those who do it, so you can;t say that is isn;t worth the risk

maybe for you but not for them

  • @mr420ing If one falls from 25-35 feet onto stone multiple bones will be broken. It only takes one small mistake to fall. What if his hand slips? What if a piece of the stone he is holding breaks off? What if his foot slips? What if the stone happens to be slippery? What if he gets sweat in his eye? If he fell from that high he would get seriously injured or he could die.

  • @pacifiedfools He would not be mentally right without doing what he does. He needs the crazy shit he does in order to feel right. I don't know the guy, just basing off all the interviews I've seen.

I agree with you on a personal level, I would never free solo something like that. I do however, have a need to take risks in order to be happy too. My risks aren't on the same level as free soloing 5.12s but they are risks non the less. I'm sure you have something that relates. Or maybe not :)

  • @FLATblacktical Hahaha "He would not be mentally right without doing what he does." I get what you mean, but I think almost everyone in the world would think otherwise.

  • @pacifiedfools I understand what you mean also. He's got issues upstairs but I love it!

  • @FLATblacktical na dude, I get what you're saying. Accomplishing something that is risky gives you a sense of accomplishment and getting that adrenaline "high" is totally worth it

  • @zealandman100: haha, A LOT Big thumb up :)

  • @markyw: he's using nogravity and wall hax

  • Fake

  • @markyw

Are you fucking retarded? Do you not know who Dean Potter is?

  • Thumps up if your hands are sweating

  • INCREDIBEL is this climb in yosemity?

  • @dylanfigo1 yes, this is in yosemite

  • no es :me gusta. es: impresionante!!!!!

  • @wateverheal twice

  • Im wondering how many steel does hes balls have.

  • and this is how the human being conquered the Earth...

  • That last move, holy **** to willingly take your feet out and hold on with just your arms and then throw up a leg hook....with no ropes on.....I am truly amazed

  • which idiots disliked this amazing video!

  • @thecoooolkid the parents. they told him not to do that anymore

  • I love this man. He's such a wonderful character, the things he says really speak of a great wisdom at his young age.

  • how can u dislike?

  • ty so much iv been looking for this video and music long time!

  • Dean Potter - is he the brother of Harry Potter?

  • Shooting is poor. I mean when Potter finishes the climbing, it is him what you want to watch, not the canyon...

  • soooo dope

  • Wow, he climbed the last section very smoothly, maybe because of his height (Alex Huber is a lot smaller).
